A comprehensive, up-to-date look at genetic modification

I enjoyed this book because it is an up-to-date look at genetic modification. It explains all the major methods including zinc finger technology, TALENS and CRISPR-Cas9. However, a prior knowledge of biology is required to understand a lot of what author Jim Kozubek discusses. His discussions are comprehensive and he gets a lot of his materials through interviews. This is very interesting but some of the quotes are so long I forgot who he was interviewing. Sometimes he goes into too much detail and I would see the trees, not the forest. Kozubek also takes several detours that detract from the book. His discussion of Chomsky was incomprehensible and his discussion of Mary Shelley was interesting but largely irrelevant. His dives into philosophy were equally unappealing. However his discussions of the potential for gene editing and the ethical and legal implications were very good. Overall, despite the faults, I can recommend this book to anyone with a background in biology who wants to learn more about the subject.

Quality First --> Lower Costs and Better Patient Outcomes!

Cutler's first chapter identifies cost, access, and quality as 'the three horsemen of the (American healthcare) apocalypse.' What a horrible depiction of our healing industry, yet very apt. Fortunately, they can all be simultaneously addressed - by focusing on quality.

The Toyota Production System (TPS) focuses on maximizing quality - through prevention, and immediate detection and correction of defects. Side benefits include faster response times, lower inventories, and improved productivity. NO tradeoffs!

The TPS has revolutionized manufacturing. Healthcare, however, has been late to adopt such thinking. The 'good news' is that now we have David Cutler's 'The Quality Cure.'

A startling finding - unnecessary care adds up to nearly $200 billion/year. Examples provided include spine surgeries, induction of preterm birth, and stenting. And then there's lots of excess imaging - not only a waste of money, but a potential cause of cancer.

Another mind-boggler - central line infections cause numerous deaths, there are protocols that essentially eliminate the problem, and we often don't follow those protocols. Overall, the death rate from medical errors is the equivalent of a medium-sized jumbo jet crashing daily.

Fast, specific information feedback is essential to quality improvement. Unfortunately, there is little of that In healthcare.

Payment reform is an essential precursor to quality improvement in healthcare. We need to stop paying on a piecework basis, regardless of quality, and move to paying fixed amounts (eg. placing doctors onto a salary basis), without making the mistake of earlier HMOs. (Then they dictated what was allowed and not allowed. Not the case now with the ACA global payment model.)

Two more key points - patients have a lot to contribute to care improvement. A good start would be exercise, diet, and smoking cessation. And second, we haven't yet begun to see the benefits of electronic medical records - vast improvements in treatment are likely to result from mining healthcare databases.

Realistic view on American healthcare

I am a Master's degree student in healthcare administration, and this book was recommended as one of the "good reads" by my instructor. David Cutler made a great impression on me both as a writer and as a professional. His knowledge is undeniable, and he is able to explain the basics of the US health care, its issues and benefits in a simple language. The book addresses the actual topics such as Affordable Care Act, reasons why it was implemented, while keeping it short and simple. If you have never read anything on healthcare, you probably would be just fine reading this book. It requires literally no prior knowledge and explains everything very well. Finally, if you have read other books about our healthcare, you will find this one very refreshing as it is realistic, yet not too depressing as many others.

Historians meet Health Care in America

I would only hope that our elected officials would taake the time to read books like this one. Our Health care system is ne that was created from serendipity and greed. We have only been made to focus on patient outcomes as a result of fear of litigation and reputation in too many cases. We should make health care act as a real business and get the electied officials out of medicine and allow consumers more say so. This is good for a basic discussion starter, but the problem is much to complex for the simple answers it gives. I would really recommend this for the real historians out there. Health care is too important to be used as a political football, we need leadership and thoughtfulness.

WARNING - Downloadable Swatches No Longer Available?

I've been a regular user of an earlier edition of this book for years. I recently purchased the revised edition, solely to obtain the "downloadable swatches." Unfortunately, the link provided in the book is a "404 error - page not found." I've contacted the publisher multiple times, but they seem unable to provide a good link - after the 3rd call, they sent instructions for loading the .ase files into Adobe, but no files or link to them. Still waiting for a resolution after 2 weeks.

The book is extremely useful, but if you have a prior version there is no reason to purchase this edition.

I will revise this review upwards if the publisher provides a good link, but until that happens I cannot help but feel ripped-off .....

UPDATE: After a couple more exchanges, the publisher emailed zip files with all the .ase libraries, so thanks very much. However, the URL published in the book is still incorrect, and there is no follow-up information on the publisher's website. Bottom line - this is a great book, but if you want the digital downloads you must be ready for an ordeal. I am changing my review from one star to three, but cannot recommend higher given the problem.

Didn't work for me. Good for people looking to work with pre-set palettes

I am giving this two stars only because the product is not what I was expecting - I was looking for CMYK values that would translate my visual/screen/paint colors exactly for the print process - for nearly any imaginable color - this is more of a guide for using color palettes (along w CMYK values for each). Its perfect for someone who is not comfortable with using colors - color index 2 might be more in tune of what I was looking for, but i don't know yet.

The process color Manual would be a lot more useful, if, like me, you are comfortable with handling color, but, looking for something to ensure that the print color matches your visual/screen/paint color. Process Color Manual, 24,000 CMYK Combinations for Design, Prepress, and Printing

However, the Process Color Manual is pretty pricey. If you are looking for pre-color palettes to work with, this is a decent guide. As for me, I will be sending this particular book back.

A Great Tool for Any Artist!

This book was referred to me by a colleague. The first surprise was that the book is only 5" x 6". But on the same hand--it's nice that the book can be out and not take over my entire desk. So, the color samples are small but good enough and plenty. The addition of pattern and graphic samples within the color scheme are awesome and would help even the most imaginative minded artist. These are spelled out in RGB and CMYK.

Overall, this book will help me make color decisions quicker and push me to choose outside the box.

great in a perfect world

The book is more for people who have never heard of multicultural counseling and gives a step by step of multicultural counseling in a perfect setting. It does not give real depictions of how the counseling process works, only ideal. Even my professor didn't care for the text.

Great book for people who would like to learn more about retail store layout and display. After reading a few pages, I realized just how little I knew about merchandising. I will be learning much more than I ever thought. Our store front windows already have changed and our customers love them!
