Find Out What Really Happened to the First Queen

In Queen Song by Victoria Aveyard, we finally find out about Cal’s mom, King Tiberias’s first wife, Queen Coriane. This novella broke my heart on so many levels! Coriane is a wonderful character who was perfect for the soon-to-be king. She was his balance, his confidant, his best friend…you know, what every wife strives to be.

Coriane’s family—the house Jacos—was a part of the court, but just barely. Her father had lost all their money gambling, and Coriane wished for the day that she could leave him, prayed for a life she knew she’d never have. She didn’t want a court life, despised it as she despised how her silver gift elevated her above those with a different color blood. She didn’t understand it, it wasn’t fair, and she wanted it to change.

When Coriane first meets Tibe by chance, they strike up an immediate friendship. He can just be himself with her and her with him. This doesn’t go over well in the court, especially from Elara Merandus. In Red Queen, it was implied that this woman was somehow responsible for Coriane’s death and we get a look at Elara that is truly terrifying.

Elara is a Whisper, meaning that she can read others’ minds and also manipulate thoughts and dreams. She takes offense to not being chosen as queen and I really didn’t want to be in Coriane’s shoes! This woman is evil…let’s just leave it there.

Overall I enjoyed this story. It was great backstory and confirmed some suspicions I had from the first book. If you enjoy the series and you want to know what really happened to the first queen, grab a copy of this book!

Coriane's Story!

Out of the two novellas available, I was actually looking forward to this one the most! Victoria Aveyard did an amazing job with Coriane and the tone of her life! It was written in third person and spanned about six years in only 54 pages, but it was perfect and so well written! I loved reading about the young Julian, and it was really interesting to read about Cal's dad and then baby Cal! I loved Cal's grandparents and Robert - I feel like there was a huge leap from the more close, loving, and supportive family portrayed in this novella to the one Cal and Mavin have in Red Queen... It's crazy! I also liked how it specified and explained why Cal and Mavin could not marry for love. As for Coriane, I thought the author did such an amazing job with her and the mood in her story/life! We already knew how it was going to end, but even if you didn't - the mood of the story was so foreboding throughout! And I mean really... we all know what Elara is capable of...

The last two journal entries were so amazing!

I'm really glad I read this before I read Glass Sword. Now I'm so pumped for it, and back in the story, and excited to read it! I feel like it really adds to the story to read this after Red Queen and before Glass Sword! Like Red Queen, it was amazing and extremely well written and leaves you so excited to read more!

Interesting

This was interesting. Never thought we'd get anything from this character's perspective. Sad how easily her life was bad, to worse, to wonderful, and ended so terribly. Mostly her own issues, but I can't imagine her life was easy at all. Much like royalty of today I imagine. I like getting the history of this world before what the first book had. I'd like to get more on that after she died and while Cal was growing up. How it became what it was? This makes me want to re-read the first since I must have forgotten a whole lot about the book and this society.

Snag This Classic Below $50US Before It Is $600... KINDLE a great option...

The mid 90's were the heyday of fractals applied to everything, and Mandelbrot himself even attended the conference upon which this book was based. The new field of "quantum biology" is busily evaluating dynamic systems and "limit functions" that show not only how limits (like the old golden ratio overused example) make repeating patterns efficient in biosystems, but also the population, competition, growth etc. cycles of DST.

Remember, however, that the alternative, in exponential growth functions as well as DST, are the "other" two stepchildren of dynamic systems (other than oscillators): strange attractors and chaos. Enter fractals. This wonderful volume (daresay now a classic) details the foundations upon which a LOT of research is being done today, even though for roses by another name (splines, differential equations, etc.) in all aspects of biology and medicine, from quantum chemistry up to medical devices.

Highly recommended for "bio mathematicians" as well as math savvy fractal lovers -- get it soon while there are still decent prices. SAVINGS TIP: This volume does NOT have the complex exponential notation that often doesn't work on Kindle, so the Kindle option is a real plus, even at $40 (I'm surprised it's not less, but as a rarity/classic, the publisher can get away with it). Still better since it is so readable on Kindle, than the soon to be seen $500 plus print versions once the supply dries up! There are many other, even more current fractal books out there, but this is one of the few that covers the biomed field in more than "lay" terms. One famous four volume set is now over $200 a volume, and another is over $100 ON Kindle! Hot topic, high demand, low supply, you get the point!

I bought this book with every intention of reading it on my flight next week. Mistakenly, I figured, I'd read a little of the first chapter. Two hours later, I'm halfway done with entire book. It's well written and engaging. Must read if you're GREENWALL.

Being a fan of OpTic Gaming for many years, it is really awesome to finally see their biggest members share their stories. Whether you are into video games or not, this book is a great read simply because it is not just about video games but it's also about their personal lives and how they have been changed by competitive gaming. I have learned a lot about these authors that I had never known before. While many might not think a book about eSports and video games would be interesting, there are a lot of struggles each of these people had to go through in order to become the successful organization that they are today.

Not great. Timeline continuity is shot when you have so many perspectives. Would have been much better if H3CZ have the history of OpTic and then let the rest of the org add there sections in as an epilogue or something.

Gary R. Hess is Distinguished Research Professor of History at Bowling Green State University, where he taught for forty-five years. His publications include The United States at War, 1941–1945 (Wiley, 3rd edition, 2010), Presidential Decisions for War: Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and Iraq (rev. ed., 2009), Vietnam and the United States: Origins and Legacy of War 1941–1945 (1998), and The United States’ Emergence as a Southeast Asian Power (1987).

Good entertainment and a harrowing warning on the dangers of nuclear weapons and the minds of dictators

I got this book when it came out, in paperback edition, back in 1980, and soon wore it out. As a native New Yorker (four generations), it terrified me beyond words.

The authors of this book, veteran journalists and a long-time writing team from two continents and perspectives, wove together a highly complex thriller and cautionary tale about two malignant threats to civilization: the dangers of nuclear terrorism and the fanaticism of Muammar al-Qaddafi, set in roughly the Christmas season of 1979.

The detail and plotting was intricate and impressive, with an array of entertaining characters, some of them real people, like Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Deputy Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Nobel Laureate Stanley Ulham, and Muammar himself. Others were fictional: dedicated and aging New York police detective Angelo Rocchia, who cracks the case, his eager sidekick FBI agent Jack Rand (with the usual buddy police-movie issues), National Security Adviser Jack Eastman, French super-spy Henri Bertrand, and of course, the terrorists themselves, the extremely dysfunctional Dajani family, whose career in nuclear physics and international terror ends in fratricide and gunplay. There's also the obligatory New York mayor who clearly resembles Ed Koch.

The authors offer a wide range of settings, the faux glitter of Studio 54, the deserts of Libya, the hills of Jerusalem,, the centers of power at the Pentagon and the White House, an upper-class apartment in Paris, a great newspaper's editorial offices, slums in Brooklyn's Red Hook, a cellar full of outdated nuclear civil defense supplies, the New York Transit Authority's operations center, a mistress's apartment in Manhattan, a snappy (and real) restaurant on Centre Street, a suburban house in Spring Valley, the laboratories of Los Alamos, and the streets of Greenwich Village, where I grew up, so the book had immediate resonance to me. I was highly amused that the terrorists chose to hide their nuclear weapon right behind the garage where my father used to park our family car.

There are weaknesses. The American military responds to the crisis a lot faster than it probably really could. The secret is held a lot longer and more effectively than believable, given the vast overnight mobilization by American intelligence, police, and military agencies. Some of the characters are stock types, like the New York Mayor, the Police Commissioner, and some of the Cabinet members. The disintegrating romance between the Police Detective and his New York Times girlfriend seems somewhat tacked-on and its fate is unresolved.

And while a 1978 evacuation of Manhattan Island seemed an unlikely feat, the 2001 and 2003 evacuations in the wake of 9/11 and the blackout showed that it could be done without chaos, with fine organization, good humor, and excellent public-spiritedness. The authors seem to regard New York as a disintegrating nightmare. In 1978, that may have been true, though.

The book has two warnings: the United States (and therefore Western civilization) is utterly unprepared for and completely at risk for nuclear terrorism with devastating consequences. Some of that has been addressed by advances in technology, like gamma-ray detectors. Others by unmitigated horror -- 9/11 raised homeland security awareness to record levels. Nonetheless, the danger remains -- that someone with immense scientific ability, good financial resources, and a large penknife to grind might develop a nuclear weapon, and rather than fire it by rocket or plane at America or Britain, simply smuggle it into London or New York by ship, and incinerate either of those cities to make their point. A frightening idea, indeed.

The other warning was about Muammar al-Qaddafi. He was depicted as a menace to the body politic. That came true, with his ghastly terrorist attacks and incidents, culminating in the horrible 1988 Lockerbie bombing, which incinerated an American airliner and the Scottish town it was flying over. By today's Brobdingnagian standards of terrorism, that attack seems small beer, which is unfortunate and a sad commentary on the public memory.

But in the end, Qaddafi was stopped. Not as in the book, which hints that he will be the victim of assassination, nor by foreign enemies, or illness and age, but by his own people, who grew tired of his bizarre tyranny, and gave him the same treatment that Italians gave Mussolini and Romanians to Ceausescu...butchering him in public. Qaddafi is now a monument to insane egotism and a warning to would-be tyrants that their worst enemy is the people they claim to lead.

However, despite its age, this novel still stands up as good entertainment and a harrowing warning on the dangers of nuclear weapons and the minds of dictators...they should not go together.

I first read this book almost 15 years ago. It is practically bleeding with researched technical facts to enhance the plot, which is also captivating. Two main characters, Whalid and the President, seem to change their outlook later in the book.

It is a must read, especially now. A TLC broadcast from 1997, Doomsday: On The Brink, shows that as decades pass, such an incident might be inevitable. In the last 30,000 years, every other weapon the human race has invented has proliferated and been used. Decades? Centuries? Millenia? When the people who remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki have passed? Who might be tempted to push the button then? Not just political or military leaders, but terrorists?

A terrifying must read.

I couldn't put the book down

This is a prototype Tom Clancy book before there were Tom Clancy books.
I had bought The Fifth Horseman at an airport before a business trip. I read it on the flight for half an hour or so. Then it disappeared into the piles of non-essential materials.
Four months later, the book resurfaced. (Obviously, the first few chapters hadn't made much of an impression.) It was a morning in June about ten o'clock, outdoors on a hammock, when I started the book once more. It was in my den, after midnight, when I finally read the last page of the book.
What a story! A cliff hanger. Tremendous suspense. Extremely plausible. So good that I didn't read another novel for months because nothing else could compete with the experience The Fifth Horseman had provided. It was simply THAT good.
Amazon.com says this book is now out-of-print. Don't let that stop you. Buy it at auction. Find it at your library. Listen to it on audiotape. If you like books of international intrigue, this is the definitive suspense story.

Great resource

I consider myself a very good diabetic in terms of vigilance and glucose control...and this book was a fantastic refresher course while teaching me new things, as well. It actually solved two or three mysteries for me that would have made things easier in the past had I known them. I will likely reread this once a year...it did a great job motivating me to work for tight control.

More of a "quick start" guide...

Lots of positive chatter about this book, so I ordered it. My DH is 52, lifelong Type 1, super-active so we're always looking for useful tidbits.

Unfortunately this book's content is pretty elementary. It would be an improvement over the pamphlet you got when you were first diagnosed, but it would certainly be useful only in the first 6 mos - 1 year or so, and then only if your lifestyle is pretty plain vanilla. If you work unusual hours or rotate shifts, if you travel constantly or have a job with loads of stress, if you're extremely athletic, if you have other health issues that seriously affect control, if you're determined to go for tight control, this is not the book for you.

Scheiner skips the hands-on details of how to do a lot of things (like down-and-dirty details of adjusting basals and boluses for pump users in complex scenarios). He gives the Readers Digest version but not the super-detailed version. As you'll see throughout the book, Scheiner would like you to consult with his diabetes practice to deal with these trickier situations. Just my personal opinion, but I don't think plugs for your business belong in the actual content of a book like this. If you want to plug your diabetes consulting practice, stick it on a separate page at the front or back of the book.

*MY* advice for complicated scenarios is that you need a DIFFERENT book, Pumping Insulin: Everything You Need to Succeed on an Insulin Pump. This is an invaluable and unique toolbox for anyone with Type 1. I think we have bought the last three editions and in each edition Walsh and Roberts have added new tidbits and suggestions (and I am not usually someone who shells out for multiple editions of the same book).

As I said in a comment, Pumping Insulin is truly like the doc/CDE you WISH you had but can never find. My hubby is an ultramarathoner, triathlete, century cyclist and the PI book has been extremely helpful in troubleshooting lows after all-day training/events, figuring out how best to adjust boluses and basals and food for different activities (swimming and running - very different!) and so forth.

(Sheri Colberg's Diabetic Athlete's Handbook, 2d ed, is also very useful for Type 1 people who are seriously physically active, but if I could only have one book, I'd take PI over Diabetic Athlete. And I wouldn't bother with Think Like A Pancreas at all.]

The only downside of PI is that it is for smart people who aren't scared of numbers. It's not for Everydiabetic. It's for folks who want tight control and have the brains and analytical affinity to dive in. It's the ultimate self-management book.

If that's not you, that's cool - but Think Like A Pancreas isn't going to do the trick for you either, unless you're one of those "plain vanilla" folks I mentioned above.

Essential reading for anyone dealing with diabetes, experienced or not

Gary Scheiner's first edition of this book was excellent, it's hard to believe that he could improve on it so much.

Full disclosure: I've used Gary's services at Integrated Diabetes Services and benefited greatly from his help. My diabetes technology blog is mentioned in the book. I have had type 1 diabetes for 40 years, this book informed and motivated me.

Think Like a Pancreas starts with Gary's diabetes diagnosis story - this guy really gets diabetes because he's had Type 1 since 1985. He has used many different types of diabetes insulin pumps, blood glucose meters, and continuous glucose meters (CGM).

The second chapter (What's the Dang Diddly Point?) focuses on the reasons why blood glucose (BG) control is important. Instead of telling you just about 'complications', Gary explains that improved control will give you energy, reduce your appetite, keep you healthier, and give you the ability to lift cars with one hand. OK, I'm just kidding about the last one. But this chapter is motivating and empowering, you'll WANT to work at improving you BGs after reading this one.

As he says at the start of the chapter "Taking care of diabetes is really just an ongoing series of small sacrifices, costs, mental efforts, and time commitments." We're never going to achieve perfection, but we can constantly improve diabetes control.

The remaining chapters talk about: the different types of diabetes; the keys to controlling these, including even lancet choices; basal (background) and bolus(meals, BG corrections) insulins; the many factors that can affect your BG levels (and how even the best controlled are out of range 25% of the time); places to get support and help, including a huge number of excellent websites; and companies that provide various diabetes-related products.

The appendices are: logsheets; carb factors for various foods; glycemic indices for foods; and a useful table of carb amounts to cover exercise.

Phew, a lot of information. But Gary writes extremely well and this is book is easy to read, though you'll end up highlighting and marking many parts of it.

I strongly recommend this essential book for people with diabetes, parents of children with diabetes, and medical folks who are treating diabetic patients. Over the years I've purchased many copies (1st edition and this one) to give to folks who are struggling because of diabetes. It's just excellent.
