Cute book and fairly easy to start felting...

I saw this book at Chronicle books and asked for it, and supplies, for my birthday in November. I've now done two of the characters (who became true characters as they are a bit lopsided/funky) and I'd say it is pretty easy to pick up. However, I am giving the book 4 stars because I would have liked to have a helpful section explaining more about using different sized needles, tips on what to do if certain things go awry, etc. While practice makes perfect and you learn along the way, would have appreciated a little guidance along the way.

Wonderful resource for children & adults

The Great Big Book of Everything

My 2 year old daughter loves this book. We bought it for her because she watches Stanley on Disney Channel and wanted a "Great Big Book of Everything" just like Stanley. This book fits the bill. While there is a lot of textual information about the animals, a younger child can enjoy just looking at the pictures, which generally fill up over half of the pages. My daughter is now at the point where she will ask me what animal I like, and then she will find it in the book.

The only criticism I have of the book is that the first couple sections are on simple animals like worms, and that they are given equal time to mammals, which is what younger children are most interested in.

Concise, Comprehensive and Understandable

If you're unfamiliar with economics in general, but are in the mining industry, I would recommend this book to you. Not only is Mining Economics and Strategy easy to understand, it incorporates helpful examples, methods and programs to support the text.
The book is not limited to mining engineers either. Examples and all information can be understood and utilised in all economical situations - i.e. anywhere money is involved.
As a mineral processing engineer this book was recommended by a mining engineer and I was pleasantly suprised with the detail and presentation of the book

Very practical approach with many excellent example evaluations

Runge's approach to this topic is the most practical of all the experts in this field. He provides many good examples with which you can model your own evaluation to most mining situations. He also offers a two day course, which also provides you with the book. His major competition is Frank Stermole, whose book is much more theoretical and harder to put into actual practice. I would recommend Ian Runge's book for those who need to get a good grasp on the subject in short order. Very well written, by a recognized PhD specializing in the topic.

This Is the Big One of American English Dictionaries in Paperback and It's Well Edited and Comprehensive, Too!

I have used various editions of Funk and Wagnalls' hardback and paperback dictionaries for many, many years, indeed, for most of, firstly, my adolescence, and, then, my adult life (my present age getting close to 70 years long now!). However, I have made resort to the large Standard and College editions in hardback binding of this trusty dictionary less and less frequently in recent decades; Funk and Wagnalls, while of sterling reliability due to its conservative (so far, I think, I hope, to the present!) approach to lexicography, can be just a tad too stodgy for primary reference: too little slang, just a bit too unbending in some ways. Since the 1980s or so, my preference for the Webster's "New World" college editions in a single hardback volume (always my favourite, anyway, in each and every one of its four major editions thus far), and, to a lesser extent, the American Heritage full and college editions in hardback, finally have usurped the place that Funk and Wagnalls once had for me.

Of course, living in Québec, within the Canadian context, I also use the Chambers, Cassells, and Gage dictionaries of English quite extensively, since American spelling and pronunciation (which, of course, prevail in the dictionaries of Funk and Wagnall, American Heritage, and in any Webster) are not sufficiently close to Commonwealth and Canadian usage. However, I utilise these British and Canadian dictionaries, in fact, mostly for just that, spelling (especially Chambers) and pronunciation (Gage above all), as well, of course, for words and uses that American English does not represent, while I nonetheless prefer the Webster "New World" and American Heritage hardback editions for definitions, usage levels, and etymology. I only add that I am an avid user of dictionaries and make resort to a very wide variety of other dictionaries besides those which I discuss here!

What makes the case different in evaluating single volume paperback dictionaries is that Funk and Wagnalls simply packs the most vocabulary into a compact volume (fatter than most paperback books, dictionaries or otherwise, but still very portable and economical of space needed to keep it at hand and also reasonably legible without undue eye strain) than any other widely published and distributed softcover dictionary. The paperback dictionary editions deriving from the Webster's "New World" and American Heritage Dictionaries are yet more beautifully edited in their compact paperback formats as, of course, they are in hardback editions, but they just do not include a wide enough vocabulary base to suffice verification needs when reading fairly sophisticated book and periodical literature. Mick Wall has been a rock journalist since 1977 and currently writes for Mojo and a variety of other publications. He traveled extensively with Guns N' Roses in the last 1980s and early 1990s, first earning Axl Rose's trust and later his fury. He lives in England.

An informative but superficial biography

If you don't already know too much about Axl Rose and Guns 'n' Roses, this is a very informative read. On the other hand, there's nothing here that's really new. Most, if not all, of the information is from secondary sources (published articles and interviews, website posts, etc.) rather than original research. It's as much a biography of the original members of Guns 'n' Roses as about W. Axl Rose. Their stories are inextricably interwoven--it's only to be expected that a bio of Axl will cover a lot of GNR territory; however, as the title promises a bio of Axl, I was expecting a little more than I got. It's tempting to compare this book with the recently published biography of ex-GNR guitarist Slash, but I won't, because Slash was cool enough to give us a window into his own life in the writing of that book and was completely on board with its content, while this bio of Axl is, as the title says, unauthorized.

It does cumulate to some degree the timeline of Axl's *still* unreleased CD Chinese Democracy, and I came away with a slighly better understanding of the mystery behind its perpetual delay. Writer Mick Wall also covers the known facts of Axl's seclusion and the emotional and legal entanglements of the years following the disintegration of the original Guns 'n' Roses, the evolution of the "new" Guns 'n' Roses, and the persistent striving toward perfection that seems to inform (and torment) every choice made by Axl Rose.

While this is a worthwhile read for anyone who wants to know something about the provocative frontman to one of the world's biggest rock bands and how it all went down, as a biography W.A.R. fails to meet its own challenge. True biography requires much more in-depth research into the biographer's subject, with input from the primary players in the life of the subject, from the subject him/herself when possible, and it requires a willingness to delve in a balanced, serious way into the influences and motivations of the subject in order to see the large framework of a life and its influence, and what that life can contribute to our understanding of ourselves and the world we inhabit. Axl and his raw genius deserve as much. Hopefully his story will one day be told with the honesty it deserves.

The lives of Axl Rose...

To be blunt, anyone who is a halfway decent writer, who has been following the saga of Axl Rose/GN'R over the years, could have written this book. There is really *nothing* new here--no new insights, no new information, no secrets revealed--nada. It's a mess--just every rumor and known fact, strung together, with nothing of value to any fan or anyone curious in learning more about Axl Rose.

And Wall--yeah, we know that you have a beef with Axl--but couldn't you have been just a little more objective, instead of using spin to paint as unfavorable picture of Axl Rose as possible? For example, when discussing the band's 2002 and 2006 tours, why did you only focus on the negative reviews, and not mention any of the positive ones? When discussing "the Spaghetti Incident?," why note that it was "poorly received," when in addition to some negative feedback, it also got 3.5 Stars from ROLLING STONE and other positive reviews, such as the one from Entertainment Weekly? And these are just a few examples. And what's with the snide remarks, one after the other? It's going on 20 years since "Get in the Ring" was released, time to move on...

To be honest, "W.A.R. The Unauthorized Biography of W. Axl. Rose" says more about Mick Wall than Axl Rose. This book is nothing more than the bitter ramblings of a hack--a mediocre journalist, in the guise of a book.

My favorite book of 2013

Fantastic book! Bailey's ethnography of Ballroom in Detroit, illuminates the ways Black sexual marginals resist multiple forms of exclusion to create a new gender and sexual system and kinship through a dynamic form of cultural production. Read this book if you want to be challenged and inspired!

Butch Queens

So I used this text in an Anthropology course, specifically to understand the experiences of those who are in the LGBTQ community. This text helped alot since it centered on the black LGBTQ community in Detroit. I never knew that in Detroit the culture was accommodating of gender variant individuals. As I soon found out, from watching the films Paris is Burning and The Aggressives, even though a community may appear accommodating of queers and transgender individuals power hierarchies exist within their own identities and categories. This was a good enthography to read as introduction into the world of the black LGBTQ community in Detroit. This would be a good text for most anthropology courses which focus on gender variant individuals. The book arrived on time however, due to its packaging the back spine was torn. However it was able to serve my purpose for my anthropology course and that's all that I needed. So I gave it three stars due to the packaging which resulted in a tear on the spine, however besides that the book came in good condition and was ready for use.

I am from Detroit and had no idea about the burgeoning Ballroom Community in the city, which speaks to the author's point. I love the critical analysis being brought to bear on the subject matter. The author effectively combines his personal voice and experience with an academic analysis.
