My First Foray Into Roman History and I've Never Been the Same Since

This is a combined review for the audiobook editions of both "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God" by Robert Graves.

Like so many others, I was drawn to these books after watching the 1976 PBS adaption which enthralled and intrigued me. This was my first foray into Roman history and I've never been the same since. That said, for those (like me) comparing Jack Pulman's screenplay to the actual book will be both impressed and disgusted. Mr. Pulman certainly got all the plot points but in the process of doing do took some curious "liberties" with both the source material and (I've come to find out) history itself. I won't disappoint the reader by revealing of to what exactly I'm referring - better if you ferret it out yourself, I think.

So how are the books, you may ask? Simply amazing. I know it's a cliche' but the books are most definitely better than the movie. And Derek Jacobi's reading is just as inspired and delightful as his screen performance was as Claudius in the PBS mini-series. I enjoyed them both immensely and will, no doubt, be taking another trip through them both again.

Finally I am a Christian, and as a final note to my fellow believers I encourage these books and/or the PBS television series for no other reason than to put the New Testament in historical context from the Roman side. I think you'll find, as I did, your depth, breadth, and understanding of the Gospels, Book of Acts, and the epistles exploding as you work through Mr. Grave's fine research and writing.

Highest recommendation. These books are classics!

Brings early imperial characters vividly to life.

Really nice piece of historical fiction. Brings early imperial characters vividly to life. Claudius as a character is a great vehicle for this clever narrative.

I initially picked up the story as a pre-Italy vacation book. Now I can't wait to see the room from "Villa Livia" in the Museo Nazionale Romano (Palazzo Massimo Alle Terme). What a wonderfully monstrous character she was!

The beginning of the book flew by, then it got a bit bogged down until Caligula took power toward the last stretch of the book. He was worth the wait - what a terror. Some of the names are tough to follow. Lots of characters zip by, but the author does a good job of jogging your recollection of some of the recurring or important minor ones.

Having savored the completion of the book for a couple of days now, I think the things that will stay with me are:

--> how familiar tyranny is whenever it occurs in history
--> how interesting that this was written in the 1930s with fascism on the rise
--> Caligula was totally outrageous - but familiar at the same time
--> how remarkable it is that some people ever assume power -- perhaps few so remarkable as poor Claudius
--> wow - the power of poison

What can I say -- Robert Graves was an utter genius!

First, let me explain about the sexual content: It is not vivid, does not take up much of the narrative, and is definitely not a reason to keep your child from reading the book if you happen to be blessed with a child who wants to read something beyond Hunger Games and the subsequent rip-offs of Hunger Games.

I first knew of Robert Graves for his poetry and for a marvelous historical work of his, The Long Weekend, which is among my favorite history books. When I came across this work of his, I was intrigued because the Julio-Claudians have always seemed to me to be the most interesting of Rome's dynasties. I think it's because of the dynamic women involved behind the scenes and not-so-behind the scenes.

What Graves has done here is to take incredibly well-researched history and turn it into a novel that is amazingly factual (he really doesn't make up much so much as he speculates a bit -- and frankly, his speculations are probably right considering his vast knowledge of the period) and yet also compelling and vivid. Claudius, one of the saner Julio-Claudians (this being the dynasty that brought us Nero and Caligula) is the narrator, telling the story of his incredible grandmother Livia and how she secretly was the true power ruling Rome -- and also, incidentally, an incredibly depraved and evil woman, too! It goes into the deep, personal stories behind a great many Romans with whom most people only experience a momentary grade school acquaintance. The writing style has a very appealing sarcastic humor at times, though most of the book is more of a drama than a comedy.

I would highly recommend this to anyone with even the slightest interest in Roman history, or just anyone who likes a really well-written narrative. Having taught high school for several years, I can also with confidence recommend this as a great book for teens and preteens. If you have a son or daughter preparing to take AP World History, this would be an excellent summer reading book to help him/her prepare to leap into the course (and, again, the vast majority of the book is actually true, so it can make great fodder for fleshing out an essay better in the heat of an AP exam).

See also references will lead students to other pertinent information, and each entry concludes with a short bibliography. An outstanding feature of the set is the succinct statement/definition at the beginning of each entry. Other prominent and useful properties are the topic finder and three indexes. Volume four contains a selection of primary sources listed chronologically from the Code of Hammurabi to the Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization in 1995. Black-and-white photographs, illustrations, and maps are located throughout the encyclopedia. With today's interest in globalization, classes across the curriculum will find multiple uses for this reference set. This alphabetically arranged encyclopedia is designed as a reference tool for those wishing to learn about trade in history and its impact on social and political issues in given periods. Treating the subject across time, from the ancient world to the present, the 450 topical, biographical, and broad-issue essays cover a variety of topics, from specific countries, regions, and continents to trade organizations, such as the Hanseatic League and World Trade Organization, to biographical entries for those who have influenced world commerce, such as Christopher Columbus and Peter the Great. Historical episodes that have altered the course of trade (for example, the fall of the Roman Empire) are included as well, along with lengthier essays on general topics that correlate with changing trade relations, such as Religion and Warfare.

Entries range in length from several columns to 10 pages, with areas of broader reach and applicability receiving appropriately more coverage. Each entry begins with a grey-boxed definition of the term under scrutiny and is followed by a detailed examination. The prose, written by numerous subject experts, most with college or university affiliations, is generally clear but dry. Each entry ends with a list of cross-references, and many also include short print bibliographies. The many black-and-white photographs, period reproductions, and maps are well placed and ably serve to extend the text. Volume 1 lists the contents for the entire set, as well as a "Topic Finder," which serves as a rough subject access. It also contains a list of contributors, with affiliations, and the list of maps for the entire set. All volumes contain full set indexes, and volume 4 has a comprehensive bibliography; a chronology; general, biographical, and geographical indexes; and an extensive set of primary source documents.

The set does a creditable job of addressing the most salient issues in the history of world trade and serves to highlight its importance. It is a sound addition to academic and large public library collections. Ann Welton

CYNTHIA CLARK NORTHRUP teaches at the University of Texas, Arlington. Her field of specialization is modern U.S. history with an emphasis on political and economic issues.

Jerry H. Bentley (1949 2012) was a Professor of History at the University of Hawai i, M noa. Educated at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the University of Minnesota, his early research focused on Renaissance humanist scholarship of the Bible, but after coming to Hawai i in 1976 he emerged as one of the international leaders in world history scholarship and teaching. He published a wide range of articles on comparative and transnational methods in history and several books, including the seminal Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contact and Exchange in Pre-Modern Times (1993) and one of the most popular textbooks for teaching world history, Traditions and Encounters. He was the founding editor of the Journal of World History, and served as its editor-in-chief for twenty-two years, and was also a founding member of the World History Association in 1982. He developed standards and curriculum locally, nationally, and internationally, established a flourishing PhD program in world history at the University of Hawai'i, directed numerous seminars for scholars and teachers across the globe, and fostered a world history program at Capital Normal University in Beijing.

Alfred E. Eckes, Jr., a former chairman and commissioner of the U.S. International Trade Commission, is Ohio Eminent Research Professor in Contemporary History at Ohio University. His books include "The United States and the Global Struggle for Minerals".

Kenneth Pomeranz is University Professor in History and the College, University of Chicago. His work focuses mostly on China, though he is also very interested in comparative and world history. His publications include The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and the Making of the Modern World Economy (2000), which won the John K. Fairbank Prize from the AHA, and shared the World History Association book prize and has been translated into seven languages; The Making of a Hinterland: State, Society and Economy in Inland North China, 1853 1937 (1993), which also won the Fairbank Prize; The World that Trade Created (with Steven Topik, first edition 1999, 3rd edition 2012), and a collection of essays recently published in France. He has also edited or co-edited five books, and was one of the founding editors of the Journal of Global History. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Philosophical Society, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Institute for Advanced Studies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and other sources. In 2012 he was elected president of the American Historical Association.

Krishna G. Palepu is the Ross Graham Walker Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean for International Development at the Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Prior to assuming his current administrative position, Professor Palepu held other positions at the school, including Senior Associate Dean, Director of Research, and Chair, Accounting and Control Unit. Professor Palepu's current research and teaching activities focus on strategy and governance. In the area of strategy, his recent focus has been on the globalization of emerging markets. In the area of corporate governance, Professor Palepu's work focuses on how to make corporate boards more effective, and on improving corporate disclosure. Professor Palepu teaches these topics in several HBS programs aimed at members of corporate boards: "How to make corporate boards more effective, "Audit Committees in the new era of governance, "Compensation Committees: Preparing the challenges ahead." Professor Palepu has done extensive research on mergers and acquisitions and corporate disclosure. Based on this work, he coauthored the book, Business Analysis and Valuation: Text and Cases, which won the American Accounting Association's Wildman Award for its impact on management practice, as well as the Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award for its impact on academic research. Paul M. Healy is James R. Williston Professor of Business Administration, and Unit Head, Accounting and Management, at Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Professor Healy joined Harvard Business School as a Professor of Business Administration in 1997. Professor Healy received his B.C.A. Honors (1st Class) in Accounting and Finance from Victoria University, New Zealand in 1977, his M.S. in Economics from the University of Rochester in 1981, his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Rochester in 1983, and is a New Zealand CPA. In New Zealand, Professor Healy worked for Arthur Young and ICI. Prior to joining Harvard, Professor Healy spent fourteen years on the faculty at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, where he received awards for teaching excellence in 1991, 1992, and 1997. He is the co-author of one of the leading financial analysis textbooks, Business Analysis & Valuation. In 1993-94 he served as Deputy Dean at the Sloan School, and in 1994-95 he visited London Business School and Harvard Business School. Professor Healy's research includes studies of the role and performance of financial analysts, how firms' disclosure strategies affect their costs of capital, the performance of merging firms after mergers, and managers' financial reporting decisions. His work has been published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial Economics. In 1990, his article "The Effect of Bonus Schemes on Accounting Decisions," published in Journal of Accounting and Economics, was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award. Useful if cumbersome

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".
This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.
The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.
I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.
The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

Great book but could have been improved

A very good book but the book came up short for not mentioning the case of Computer Associates former executives for jiggering their financial statements to push up stock prices and paying themselves over $1.1 billion in stock options which Computer Associates later filed a lawsuit against these executives, asking for those shares back or the case of Satyam where the author of the book was sitting on the board of Satyam but failed to practice/implement the merit of transparent corporate governance that he has been preaching at Harvard Business School.

The Seller is honest.I wasn't able to use the book because it didn't have all the cases that comes with the original book. However I was able to return it for a refund without a hassle. I think the seller was suppose to specify that the book did not have the cases.

Harvey Penick Tommy Armour had a big bearing on my life and teaching -- I have used much of his wisdom, teaching and playing.

Jack Nicklaus Tommy Armour earned even more fame as a teacher than his fine playing record won for him. I'm not surprised that this book is one of the game's all-time best-sellers.

About the Author
Born In Edinburgh, Scotland, and educated at the University there, like all British boys of his generation Tommy Armour left school to fight in the First World War.

He joined the Royal Scots as a machine gunner and later became an officer in the then new branch of the service, the Tanks Corps. While serving with the tanks he was caught in a mustard gas attack and lost his eyesight, but later he regained sight in his right eye.

The winner of many amateur golf events in Europe as well as the French Open, Armour came to the United States soon after the war ended and turned professional in 1925. In 1927 he won the U.S. Open Championship and the Canadian Open. Subsequently he went on to win every major championship: the British Open; the P.G.A.; the Western; the Metropolitan; and too many cash-prize tournaments to attempt to list.

In 1929 he took over the post of golf professional at the Boca Raton Club, in Florida, where over the next quarter of a century his instruction ranged prom teaching duffers how to break 100 to brushing up the games of the top tournament professionals when they couldn't iron out their own difficulties. Armour always claimed that the instructional part of his golf career was the best -- the part he enjoyed the most.

CHAPTER ONE

Why This Book Is as Short and Simple as It Is

After declining numerous proposals to write a book of golf instruction, I took on the task which this book represents.

The responsibility was accepted because I have been allowed to teach in this book as I teach on the lesson tee -- without embellishment or padding to stretch out the basic training, and without a multitude of detail to confuse the pupil.

The brevity of this book may shock those who have been encouraged to believe that a good golf game may be bought by the page, pound or hour -- or even bought.

I have paid for hundreds of lessons when I was a lad and didn't have much money to pay as tuition fees. Vardon, Duncan, Braid, Taylor and Edgar -- all great players and all gifted teachers -- were among my instructors who not only taught me the foundation of golf but also taught me how to learn.

Association with the greatest American players added to my instruction. As I competed against them I studied them, and as I have played friendly rounds with them or followed them in some of their competitions, I have continued to be the student.

Simplicity, concentration, and economy of time and effort have been the distinguishing features of the great players' and great teachers' methods which have added to what I consider my knowledge of the game.

Hundreds of pages that might have accompanied these that you will read were eliminated from the first draft of the manuscript. Dozens of illustrations showing interim phases of the swing were cut out, and I have retained only those pictorial moments in the swing which are significant in so far as instruction is concerned. I decided that those pages and drawings portrayed refinements of technique not suitable for the practical use of most golfers and would distract the reader from profitable concentration on the essentials.

Essential reading for the average golfer.

By far the best book ever written for the occasional or average golfer. My dad gave me the hard cover version in 1960 and I've bought over 20 copies over the years for friends and family. The line drawings are better than any photograph for positioning of hands, feet, and clubs as well as swing action. Instructs by providing what you need to know and what you need to focus on, without any excess detail. Brilliant book that I refer back to every year.

A Great Book for the Occasional Golfer

I must echo the sentiments of the other reviewers...this is the only golf instructional book recreational players will ever need. Armour gives you a few simple things to remember while you address the ball and take your swing that can eliminate many of the typical problems experienced by the occasional player.
For example, his suggestion that a right-hander imagine dragging his left knee behind the ball on the upswing and then swinging it back through the ball on the downswing was very effective in curing my problem of getting a proper hip turn.
The genius of the book is that the techniques Armour suggests are easy to remember while you are actually out there in the process of swinging the club. This book suggests many of the same principles described in Ben Hogan's books but I think they are laid out with greater simplicity and simple techniques that can correct common problems with grip, stance and swing are what I think average and beginning golfers like myself are looking for.

Must Read!!

If you're tired of "religion" and going in circles in your spiritual life, then this book is for you. Examining the root is often the best method in solving any issue in life, whether spiritual, physical, material, etc. This book gets to the heart of the matter ( no pun intended), and helps readers to realize the solution to many of their problems, may be the old heart. The new heart comes with genuine love for God and obedience to His will and to His ways. This new heart produces a new way of relating with the Lord, serving Him, and serving others. This book has helped me re-focus my prayer life and times of devotion. My focus is no longer on outward shows of religion, but on demonstrating the reality that God has given me a heart transplant, and that I have been truly born from above. A great read, and one necessary in these last days. Will be reading again!

I loaned out my old copy and never got it back, so just bought a new copy....does that tell you how much I like this book?
I've read my share of prosperity books, and this one is at the top of my list with Howard Caesar's audio book, "All About Prosperity".
If you're looking for some get rich quick type book, well this isn't it. I imagine that's one reason why he gave it the name he did, instead of emphasizing prosperity in the title. It's about changing your thinking about finances, health, relationships, all facets of prosperity. If you believe that changing your thinking will change your life, that we can control our thoughts and by doing so improve our over all circumstances, you'll find this book extremely helpful. Eric Butterworth comes from a very spiritual, and yet very practical level. He challenges many ideas that you might have studied in other prosperity books. Without naming her, he does challenge some of the prosperity techniques taught by Catherine Ponders and others. This is not to say that you should read him instead of her. To completely understand prosperity thinking, you should read both perspectives and then be guided by those principles that seem right to you. If you are open to a new perspective, and not bound by a fixed and rigid mind, you will find a lot of helpful material here.

"Spiritual Economics" is an excellent summary of Natural Law

"Spiritual Economics" is based on the spiritual laws and dynamics of abundance. One of the key elements of this books that raise it above a lot of spiritual law type writings is how practical this book is. Eric Butterworth tackles some very complex dynamics in a very pragmatic, understandable way.
Eric's writings are based largely on the philosophy of the Unity Church (a Christian Church of a different ilk). If you have a strong mainstream Christian faith, you may find some of your current beliefs being challenged. I challenge you to meditate on those challenges and work your way through them, expanding and better understanding your faith positions. I'm currently on my second read of this book (the first read of the 230 pages only took a week!) and am amazed at how much more I'm getting out of it a second time.
One of the Quick Tips I mentioned in this issue of ACHIEVE is to ask yourself "How can I apply this to my life?". It was in reading this book that I discovered this question. To get maximum benefit out of this book, keep asking yourself this question. Integrate this material into your life and you will be amazed at how much more you can manifest.
Some of the main ideas I got out of the book are: * I am responsible for all manifestations in my life, i.e. everything. * As I evolve, so does my manifestation potential evolve. * I need to do what I can with what I have where I am to manifest my desires. * I need to build the demand before the supply will manifest. I need to have the containers in which to put the supply once it comes. I need to become the kind of person who experiences that which I want before I can truly achieve it. * If things are tight, something has to give. I need to give selflessly of myself to the Universe. I strongly urge you to go out TODAY and order this book.

If You Don't Go Within, You Will Go Without

The idea of thinking your way to prosperity is really nothing new. I think it was in 1926 0r 1927 that Napoleon Hill wrote "Think and Grow Rich". There really is nothing wrong with these kind of books, in fact, many of them offer many valuable suggestions but the main problem that I have with most of them is that they are basically suggesting that the world "out there" is something ultimately real. Now, this may shock some of you people reading this review, but there is no outer world separate from your own inner consciousness.

I can already feel that I may have upset some people reading this, but the Truth is that we all have to be the change that we desire to see in the world. How can it be otherwise? Things cannot and do not change until we become the change and how do we become the change? We change our thoughts. We change our mental pictures. We change how we interpret the events in our lives. We do this through alligning our consciousness with the Consciousness of God. We begin to appreciate the things that are in our possession now. Whatever we have right now we begin to give thanks for it and proceed from there.

We tend to think that somehow wealth is the acquisistion of material goods. Wealth is a state of mind. Prosperity is an awareness of how blessed we already are! We live in on an abundant planet filled to overflowing with every kind of good thing and yet only a small number of people in this world experience abundant wealth. Not one of us needs to be poor! Not One! We have all been created to live a life that is fulfilling, blessed, and prosperous...that is God's Promise to each and every one of us..."I have come so that you might have life and have it abundantly." This "I" is our consciousness...our inner awareness of God as our all-sufficiency.

There are a lot of people who do all kinds of "mental gymnastics". They pray, they do affirmations, they meditate and yet their lives remain the same. Why? Because they are still hoping that something is going to happen to them rather than knowing that something needs to happen through them. We do not pray to make things happen, we pray so that we can be alligned with the good that is already present...we pray so that we can be the men and women that Spirit ALREADY created us to be! We don't recite affirmations to make something true, we say our affirmations from a place where we know deep in our hearts that this is the TRUTH NOW! We don't meditate in order to reach God, we meditate so that we may remove the obstructions that we put in front of God. "Be still and know I AM GOD." (Psalm 46:10)

The Wholeness of God is present (pre-sent) at every point in time and space. No matter where we may be, the Wholeness and the Holiness of God is. Wherever we are, God's Good is.

This book may or may not make you a millionaire and if you are buying it so that you can get rich quick, you're buying it for the wrong reasons. We don't get rich as much as we get an awareness that we are already rich.

This book is to be read and re-read. It is to be devoured, assimilated, and put to work. It is to constantly reaquaint one with the Truth that God and God's Good are not out there as much as they are "in here"...in our hearts, our souls, our minds...that that which we focus on will be our reality. Whether we focus on inner riches or outer conditions is always our choice in the moment and where our focus (our heart) is, there will also be our treasure (our experience).

May we treasure compassion, trust, love, peace, and understanding. May we focus on all the good that is already within us and let it unfold in beautiful and wonderful ways. May we go within and know that God's Abundant Good is NOW ours to share and to spare. May we all be what God already sees us as; rich, prosperous, and fulfilled in every beautiful way.
