This book was suggested to me by several people in my Environmental Engineering PE Prep course. I begrudgingly purchased it and it was very, very helpful on several PE exam questions. The sections on Baghouses, Cyclones, and ESPs have more depth than the Lindeburg Environmental PE book. I recommend it if you are taking the Environmental Engineering PE.

fantastic book, as an environmental engineer i use this book constantly. no matter what the need is for my air pollution problems, this book has the solutions! easy to read, great diagrams, and pictures. Gives me all the information i need to design any control device. I highly praise cooper for this book. Seriously fantastic reference material. i used it a lot as a student and now i use it as a professional. great book. Just great practice problems and examples. even has cost estimates!

Good basic manual for industrial air pollution control. However, this classic book is starting to fall behind as technology in air pollution control advances. Cooper Alley sticks with only the most very fundamental aspects of pollution control. Overall a good manual for the student or engineer, but if you are looking for an introduction to a broad range of controls, a web search might provide better results.

WOW! This book is amazing! I have been reading about the quantum for quite a while, and have seen "What the Bleep" and read "The Secret". As interesting as they were, I gleaned no tools from them with which I could actually affect change in my life. Dr. Reid's "5 Steps to a Quantum Life" not only clearly explains how the quantum works, it contains simple, user-friendly tools in the form of meditations and exercises which instruct the reader vividly on how to USE the knowledge. This is the book I have been waiting for! For the holidays, I am giving a copy to everyone I love; it's that good!

Excellent: Even Better than The Secret

I absolutely loved this book. I liked The Secret, but it left me with more questions than answers. Ms. Reid's book provides the missing pieces to the puzzle of creating the life I want. 5 Steps to a Quantum Life provides insight, helpful information and a whole host of useful exercises, meditations and practices to create the things I want in my life. After a couple weeks, I can already see tangible ways that these practices are working for me in my life. I've recommended this book to all my frieds and they are loving it as well. A must read!

This massive catalog documents an exhibition on iconoclasm, i.e., the deliberate destruction of images, at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany (May 4-August 4, 2002). Edited by Latour, a Paris-based author and professor of sociology, and Weibel, director of the center, it is both fascinating and exhausting. The works included span art history from Goya to Duchamp to video artist Nam June Paik and more, while the contributors are an international collection of curators, art historians, and other academics. General readers will find the complexity of the language daunting, and only those sincerely interested will pursue the arguments presented here. But the questions raised-why is the urge to destroy images, in the name of religion or politics, so powerful? conversely, why is the urge to create images more powerful than iconoclasm? and how can we better understand the cycle of fascination, repulsion, and destruction that obsesses iconoclasts?-make for compelling reading. This volume contains so much more than the exhibition itself that readers may find it difficult to perceive the contours of the original, and the work is best understood as a standalone, far more than merely documenting the exhibit. About the Author
Bruno Latour is a philosopher and anthropologist working in Paris. His many books on science and culture include Pandora's Box: Essays in the Reality of Science Studies, Science in Action, The Pasteurization of France, and Laboratory Life. He was curator of the ZKM exhibit ICONOCLASH and co-edited the accompanying MIT Press book ICONOCLASH: Beyond the Image Wars in Science, Religion, and Art.

Peter Weibel is Director of ZKM | Center for Art and Media Technology, Karlsruhe, and coeditor of other ZKM books, including Making Things Public: Atmospheres of Democracy (MIT Press).

A superb textbook about Nothing made visible

In many ways this massive Yellow Pages-sized book sums up what I have always suspected about the visual arts in our time as such: That their greatness comes from the collective force of one-liners which are not all that arresting taken individually. This book really shows that the function of art in our time is that of a collective commentary on the Sutra of Art, and as such necessarily way more verbose than the original "sacred" text. Here all the eminently forgettable one-liner images made in the name of art, anti-art, art-taboo, and art voodoo throughout history---from all cultures--are gathered and presented in the full glory of their collective greatness.
But, do take note that this book is not an "art book" as such, and certainly not a coffee table variety. It belongs on your desk along with your dictionaries and encyclopedias. This is a textbook at its finest. The meat of this book is really the essays, with the images---many of them small but very clear-- inserted to augment the discussion, not the other way around.
So then what are some of the things discussed? A set of essays is grouped under a particular question, and there are some 12 plus questions that cue you in right away as to what is going to be discussed. It is like having a seminar program showing the topics to be discussed, time, and room numbers.
Some of the questions asked and responded to: WHY DO IMAGES TRIGGER SO MUCH FUROR? WHY ARE IMAGES SO AMBIGUOUS? WHY DO GODS OBJECT TO IMAGES? WHAT IS ICONOCLASH? WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MODERN ART? HAS CRITIQUE ENDED?
What intelligent person could possibly resist the temptation to find out what people have said in response to these questions? I would be a liar to say that I have read through every single essay in the book. I have not. But what I have read so far--a huge chunk--have all been very thoughtful and sincere. Now that's rare in a book whose subject matter concerns art-talk!
With over fifty people writing, talking, interviewing, there is a huge range of styles of discourse, some delightful, some witty, some funny, some dry. But, all in all, this is a very thoughtful and timely presentation of an important subject with minimum pretentiousness. As the subtitle indicates, it concerns all who take interest in the problem of images in art, religion, and science. Highly recommended.
