Simple, elegant and very useful

Bennett's writing flows. This little book is poetry and prose, pragmatic and an offering that is nothing short of a tool to remind and awaken. Even when Breathe Into Life is just sitting on the table it works as a reminder to exhale completely and be present. I have not read the book yet. But I did look through the table of content here. I had wondered did the book have the statement that Bruce Willis said about Minister Farrakhan. I always remembered that statement. I read it in the late JFK's George magazine back in 1998. I still have that magazine. He answered JFK Jr.'s question of what was his opinion of Minister Farrakhan. Bruce Willis stated that: " He was one of his heroes. He would follow him if he was black." And of course, the ADL made him take the statement back. But WE all know what the real truth is......

I will be getting this book. I do not have it right now.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

The Birth of Bukowski

HAM ON RYE is a slight , entertaining novel that is often funny.It is served up as a slice of autobiography but I'd take that with a huge grain of salt.It's quite hard to believe some of the events depicted.It covers Bukowski's alter ego from childhood through age 21.I'd say the later part of the book dealing with him after he graduates from high school is far and away the most interesting part of the book. Here we see the Bukowski we have come to know , if not love.

One aspect of the novel that is worth attention is the world it depicts.The book is set in Los Angeles between approximately 1923 and 1941.You wouldn't know the film industry or more broadly ,the entertainment industry existed.No one here is an actor , would be actor , singer , dancer or screen writer.For that matter , no one is a cop or detective.The people are lower class whites who are often European immigrants or their children who wound up in Los Angeles instead of Cleveland.There are no New York strivers,Mid west farmers daughters or Okies.You only get one glimpse of the rich , near the end of the book.This isn't the LA of Beverly Hills.It's ham on rye country.In other words , it's Los Angeles as you usually don't see it in fiction or movies , especially those covering the time period of the book.

A little too gloomy for me

This book is an interesting take on an autobiography. Mr Bukowski shares his youth as though it's happening to someone else, specifically Henry Chinaski. The writing is blunt - you won't find any SAT-style words in this book.

The book starts with Henry's first memory at age 3. There are a few key memories in the following years of Henry's life, but the story doesn't really start until the 3rd grade. The Great Depression shaped his childhood into something greatly depressing. I kept hoping something fortuitous would happen to Henry. Because Henry is basically fictitious, I wanted resolution to some if not all his problems. I wanted him to get a girl. I wanted him to get justice from his father. I wanted him to become a great athlete. But most of all I wanted him to be happy and successful.

As Henry grew older and I came to realize no happy ending was in store for him, I became disgusted by his behavior. I did not approve of violence and alcohol as resolution to problems.

5th grade Henry was my favorite. Specifically his interpretation of President Hoover's visit to Los Angeles. The English teacher wanted everyone to attend the president's visit and write an essay on it. I believe that Henry would've gone if he had been allowed. Instead he wrote an essay about an imagined visit and it was so glorious that the teacher read it to the class. His description of the motorcade, the President catering to the crowd, and the band playing patriotic and upbeat music was simply marvelous. Even at this young age, Henry becomes drunk on his own words. His violent streak also started to bud as he observes one kid looking as though Henry punched him in the face.

I found Henry's journey into adulthood fascinating. As disgusted as I was with his behavior, I just kept reading.

Disturbing but recognize quality

I wish the star rating were different, because I did NOT LIKE this book, but I recognize that it was a great book. And it was a terrible book. The only remotely likable character in the book was the nurse who drained the pus from Henry's boils. Each of the others were awful, mean, frighteningly odd, or otherwise the sort of people you'd (or at least I'd) rather not have the occasion to meet.

Henry likes no one, picks fights with nearly everyone, and drinks to oblivion whenever he has the means. His acquaintances sexually satisfy a dog, pee in a family's milk bottle, and beat each other bloody. His parents are neglectful at the best and abusive at the worst. It's a terrible existence, and it appears to be autobiographical.

I appreciated this book because it exposed me to a way of life I know nothing about, but the truth is, I was fairly content in my ignorance. I wish there were no experiences like those described, and lived, by Burkowski.

great for any age

I first read SUMMER OF FEAR in high school and found it to be the first book I couldn't put down, actually reading it all the way through in one sitting! Lois Duncan takes typical teenage angst and self-conscious paranoia and spins them together in a web of horror and mystery.
Rachel is the number one priority of her family until her cousin Julia (parents recently deceased) moves in. The two bond as sisters at first, but when Julia begins to receive all the attention, Rachel's jealousy kicks into high gear. The spin here is when "accidents" and deaths become common place. Rachel suspects Julia to be responsible, but the jealousy Rachel's family has witnessed lend them to believe Rachel is just looking for attention, leaving her to discover her "cousin's" evil secrets and legacy.
A great suspense novel I still reread occasionally. Check out the movie starring a teenaged Linda Blair as "Rachel" and Fran (The Nanny) Drescher as her best friend!

This is an awesome book!

This book is awesome until the last gripping page. When I checked this book out at the library I was a little nervous because the cover art looked really scary. It turned out to be one of my favorite Lois Duncan titles yet.
The book starts out when Rachel's aunt and uncle die and their teenage daughter Julia comes to live with Rachel's family. Julia is incredibly beautiful and Rachel is jealous of her right away. Then she starts trying to steal Rachel's boyfriend and Rachel's brother. Rachel finds really strange things in the room she shares with Julia, things normal teenage girls wouldn't have. Rachel tries to warn her Mother and Father but they just brush it off as jealousy. Then the things go from bad to worse. You just have to read the story to find out!

The author, Lois Duncan, has brought out the characters in this book, giving each of them unique traits. Lois Duncan has written yet another mystery novel that is filled with suspense and excitement. The story opens up with Rachel a seventeen-year-old girl remembering a summer when a strange incident happens. Her cousin Julia comes to live with them. Julia ruins Rachel's life and plans to take over. Julia starts by stealing her boyfriends and her girlfriends. During this story Rachel tries to convince her family and friends that Julia is bad. But of course her family does not believe her.
As Duncan travels the characters through the book she brings them through all of her troubles. I thought this book was great and I hope you will want to read it too.

SO Grateful For This Book!

I acutally bought a copy of this book 10 years ago, read it, and thought it was a load of baloney. (And was secretly freaked out by the thought that it might NOT be baloney). Then, since I didn't want to consider the possibility, I got rid of the book. Now, 10 years later, a year after my OWN chakras started 'waking up'(and freaking the heck out of me!) I was directed to this book again and am now drinking it up, absolutely relieved that it exists, because the process it's describing is EXACTLY what's happening to me. (So much for my baloney theory!)It's too bad the book is out of print now, but kudos to all of the other sellers who are still making it available. Talk about the right book at the right time. If you suspect your energy is raising itself to a higher level (or you're not sure what's going on) check out this book. It may help a lot! It defintely has helped me. (And, in truth, the fact that I read it years before I went through this experience actually helped me to recognize it when it started happening to me).

Kundalini: A Clinical Perspective

I read the first edition of this text in 1977, and in 1978, when I moved to the Bay Area from San Diego, one of my first stops was the author's Kundalini Clinic in San Francisco. But I didn't see Dr. Sannella, I saw his associate, also a medical doctor. It was a complete waste of time and money. The doctor attempted a hokie psychotherapeutic technique, to facilitate deep release and letting go, but this had nothing whatsoever to do with my Kundalini problem, which was, and still is, physiological in nature.

The author writes, "Symptoms caused by the physio-kundalini will disappear spontaneously over time because we are dealing essentially with a purifacatory or balancing process, and since each person represents a finite system, the process is self-limiting."

I don't agree at all. I've had the same Kundalini problem for forty-three years (tetanic muscle spasms along my spinal line, which creates secondary symptoms, including a Vata digestive disorder) ever since I awakened the energy. And J. Krishnamurti likewise suffered from Kundalini problems the rest of his life after his Kundalini awakening.

The book has worthwhile information for those with little or no knowledge of Kundalini, and the numerous case studies that Dr. Sannella presents provide insight into the common problems faced by people with Kundalini disorders. Dr. Sannella was a big fan of the adept Adi Da at the time of this 1987 edition, and quotes him extensively in one part of the book. Also, a number of his patients were disciples of Swami Muktananda.

The author states that he presents "essentially the same model as Itzhak Bentov" (1923-1979). And an Appendix chapter is devoted to the presentation of this model, which I find reductive and unimpressive.

If you're interested in the practice of Kundalini yoga, this is the wrong book to get; but if you're interested in a psychiatrist's clinical perspective on the Kundalini experience and the the problems that often arise from it, it's a worthwhile read.
