I can hardly praise this book enough. It is full of experience and concrete knowledge.

The text is made of 10 chapters, plus an introduction:

It has 193 pages, and is full of Schmid's paintings, almost all of them oils.

WHAT THIS BOOK TEACHES YOU:

It teaches you how to OBSERVE 3-D REALITY AND TRANSLATE IT ON A FLAT SURFACE AS DIRECTLY AS YOU CAN. The way of achieving it is to paint LIGHT ITSELF (what you see), not the very object with descriptive minutiae (what you know). Meticulous and painstaking painting tends to be naive in most hands.

Schmid asks you to clear up your mind and trust your instinct. THE HOW BECOMES OBVIOUS ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND THE WHAT AND THE WHY.

Some of his most insistent advices are: keep it SIMPLE; don't overwork; don't use ostentatious techniques; don't make random guessing brushstrokes; do a minimum of trial and error (correction wastes time); rather be BOLD than shy, but do it without hurrying and without any thoughtless bravado. Also, EXCESSIVE BLENDING IS LIKE MUMBLING WHEN YOU SPEAK.

He teaches you that, as you start, you sholud focus on one specific problem. Set a GOAL and do it in the time available. Limiting your time helps to SIMPLIFY your works. SIMPLIFY values by SQUINTING. If edges remain sharp when you squint, paint them sharp; if they go fuzzy, paint them fuzzy. Trust your squinting.

Schmid insists on the fact that, unlike common belief, most mistakes happen with drawing, not with colour. He says there is no comprehensive colour law; but there's something close to it: COOL LIGHT PRODUCES WARM SHADOWS, AND WARM LIGHT PRODUCES COOL SHADOWS. His palette has as many as 12 colours, not one more, because more than that is unnecessary (and often, the fewer colours, the better), as we can see in the colour charts--a perfect way of mixing all colours with one another until exhasusting all possible combinations of two colours plus white. (Besides, don't overmix, or else you'll obtain MUD colour.)

He recommends: Cadmium Yellow Pale, Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Yellow Ochre Light, Cadmium Red, Terra Rosa, Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Oxide Red, Viridian, Cobalt Blue Light, Ultramarine Blue Deep, Titanium White. There is no black, since he uses different mixtures of browns or reds with blue for getting a substitute for black.

He says what good lighting is for painting.

His ideas about colour harmony and composition are very down-to-earth and full of common sense. No mystic babblings or over-intelectualized theories.

WHAT THIS BOOK DOESN'T TEACH YOU:

It doesn't deal with technical intricacies about different kinds of canvases, papers, grounds, turpentine, brushes, easels, palettes, and materials in general. (Pigments do have his full attention.)It doesn't ignore technique, but it's not the core of the text. (For that subject, you can read Ralph Mayer's book on materials.) Since the book deals with painting in general no matter what medium you use, it doesn't speak about classical Old Master examples (no Leonardo, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Hals, Rubens or any painter in particular). You can apply the lessons to oils, acrylics, tempera, gouache, or even watercolour. By the way, there's a very brief part about using the palette knife, which obviously couldn't be applied to watercolour, for instance. Since the book focuses on Direct Painting the way Sorolla, Sargent or many late-19th century arists did (without mentioning them much), you will find no details about Renaissance or Baroque ways of applying paint. There are not many words about glazing, for instance. There are no words about perspective or anatomy, either, for this is not a handbook for painting specific subjects, but about how to observe light and colour in general.

I love this book! Had I found and read it a long time ago, I wolud have saved years of an agonizing, careless and method-less hit-and-miss process that had no sense at all in my learning.

Schmid has a very specific method. Maybe it's not meant for all painters, but if you love Sorolla or Sargent, this is THE METHOD for you, no matter whether you are a mere beginner or an experienced artist. And even if you aim at a very different style than that of the artists just mentioned, this book can help you a lot. Trust me!

This is a great book which I refer to repeatedly. BUT, I bought it used at Amazon for a rip-off price. Lots of people are complaining about the high price, so do yourself a favor and google his name to go to his web-site. Much cheaper there!

Reading this book can lead to much self discovery and challange even those who know their direction in the art life. Philosophies and debates arise by both reading Schmid's words and looking at his incredible artwork. The freedom with which he expresses beauty goes beyond the brush. Yes, I recommend this book to all who wish to really produce art that is from the soul and looked at through trueful eyes.

Helpful to Learn "Real" French

One of my goals for 2015 has been to learn a new language. I’ve been trudging along with building my experience with French, but at times, the material can get a little stiff or too academic. As part of my ventures into speaking “real” French, I wanted to expand into the wonderful (and colorful) realm of slang.

I had a great time with this book, and my favorite part is how the author labels the slang terms so that you will know the appropriateness. For example, while it is very helpful for someone to know what the “F word” means in English, it wouldn’t be appropriate to use it openly in public conversation. The author labels such phrases so that you don’t cause a riot in France, Haiti or Quebec.

If you need a little refresher on French, the author gives you an abbreviated bootcamp to start before you get into the fun slang. I didn’t need it, but I think it would be helpful to someone that needs to get rid of some rust.

Like most foreign language books, the author separates the words into distinct categories where you may need them (i.e. Directions, Greetings, etc.). My favorite category was “Feeling Angry” because the French language captures this emotion in a much more colorful way than my native English.

If you are working on learning “real” French, this is the book for you. Good luck on your studies!

French Slang is a RIPOFF!!

This book is a "ripoff." Ostensibly the buyer is buying a book that includes the MP3 of the audio, however, when the buyer downloads the audio, he finds out that the only one included with the purchase is the first chapter. The remaining chapters require an additional monthly charge!! None of these additional charges are mentioned in the ad for the book!!

I visited Paris a year ago, and I wish I would have had this book beforehand. This book describes the nuances of the French language while comparing certain elements of the English language; which I found to be very helpful. Where many language books fail with helping with the pronunciation of the language, French Slang excels. After giving comparisons to the English language and tips for French overall, the book goes into words and phrases that would be highly helpful to a non-French speaker that is just learning the language. If you see a phrase and aren’t sure how to pronounce it, then you can easily go back to the beginning of the book and check out how to pronounce letters. If you are visiting a country that speaks French, I would highly recommend this book.

A bumbling group of British mountaineers mounts an assault on Rum Doodle, a slightly higher neighbor of Everest, in Bowman's parody novel, which was published in 1956 and became a classic within the climbing community. Bowman cobbles together a wide-ranging crew of lovably clueless climbers, including the puffed-up narrator, Binder, and a misguided guide named Humphrey Jungle, who constantly gets lost and turns up in unlikely places. Other prominent members include measurement-obsessed scientist Christopher Wish as well as linguistic expert Lancelot Constant, whose chief talent seems to be ticking off the porters from the indigenous tribe called the Yogistani, who speak through their stomachs via a series of indecipherable grunts. Early on, a memorable mishap occurs, in which Jungle ends up falling into a crevasse and the rescue effort consists of the rest of the crew joining him while they get soused on "medicinal" champagne. Bowman also offers a couple of predictable chapters as the group goes in circles and then proceeds to climb the wrong mountain, and he spends an inordinate amount of prose on their suffering at the hands of the sadistic cook, a Yogistani named Pong. Bowman manages to sustain a very thin conceit for a large number of chapters, although the silliness can at times be sophomoric. He redeems himself somewhat with an amusing "surprise" ending that features the 3,000 Yogistani porters involved in the expedition, and overall he proves himself to be an entertaining humorist who has much to offer for readers who like their outdoor humor dripping with understated British irony. Sir Edmund Hillary Meets Monty Python

There was a period of time a few years back during which I ate up the literature of British exploration like candy - the tragic story of Robert Scott in the Antarctic, the thrilling survival adventures of Sir Ernest Shackleton, and the like. These yarns had in common their Britishness - a bizarre combination of courage and, frankly, foolishness (Scott thought he could get to the South Pole on PONIES and died in pursuit of that belief, accompanied by some people who had never even been south before, while the Norwegian Amundsen sensibly took dogs and experienced skiers and beat him to the destination).

Fortunately the British have a world-class capacity to poke fun at their own foibles, and that is what "Ascent of Rum Doodle" is all about. It parodies a (fictional) expedition to ascend Rum Doodle, a 40,000-foot (!) mountain somewhere near Everest

Expedition Leader Binder narrates his own story. In the spirit of the literature he parodies, our hero Binder never once falters in his belief of the superiority of his crew and the indomitability of the British Spirit. This, despite his crew consisting of a geographer (who is unable to negotiate the London bus system), a doctor (who is always sick), a climber (too overcome by "lassitude" to get out of his sleeping bag), a native cook (so disastrous that the team attempts to leave him behind on the mountain), and a photographer (who does not capture a single shot during the entire expedition.

This hapless crew are babysat by thousands of native porters, who at one point must condescend to actually carry the British crew (fortified by the many crates of medicinal champagne they have burdened the porters with) on their backs.

Did I mention they accidentally climb the wrong mountain??

It's apparently a kind of cult classic among people who actually do this kind of adventuring (not just armchair folk like me), but it's a quick and funny funny read, so even if "frostbite" has not been a factor in your reading choices up to now, you should have a go at this one. A humor classic that should be better known in the U.S.

Hysterically funny in a very, very gentle way

You never know with humour, and for the first half of this book I wasn't at all sure I was going to like it. Was it funny at all? I couldn't make up my mind. Then, more or less as the great climb got well and truly under way, something in my mind meshed with the sublime, ethereal imbecility of the author's theme and suddenly I kept roaring with laughter.

In a way, this is a quintessentially English book. Its humour is so gentle, so oblique, so dry. Even the running gags - of which there are many - take a while to bed down. The first reference to carrying cases of champagne up the mountain tends to have little or no impact on your brain. It's such a ridiculously impossible idea that your mind simply rejects it. But it keeps coming back, progressively associated with the expedition leader's stolid persistence in believing that it is all for "medicinal purposes", until suddenly you are swept away by helpless laughter.

If you appreciate dry wit, and you happen to have a day to spare (two half-days will answer almost as well), you really owe it to yourself to join our intrepid heros and share their triumphs, disasters and general roaring incompetence. You won't regret it.

Best Climbing Book Ever Written

If you're a serious student of mountaineering history and/or literature this is a must read. Rum Doodle will help you to put your passion into proper perspective.

If you don't give a damn about climbing but enjoy understated humor this is a fun read.

However, if you don't "get" nice and dry British humor don't bother. It's just not the book for you.

This is without a doubt the greatest spoof of the British mountaineering expedition accounts ever conceived. Every word of the book will ring true to readers that are familiar with the genre. I've read it three times and still find myself laughing out loud. But then again, I'm a climber so what do I know?

Norman Davies is chairman of the history department, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, at the University of London. He has been a visiting professor at Columbia and McGill Universities.

Fine Historical Argument

In the preface to the first edition published in 1984, Norman Davies writes, "No history book which sets out to relate the past to the present is written at the right time." Davies For Davies, the time he chose was 1983 - a few years into Jaruzelski's military coup and what appeared to be a definite lull in the historical action. 1983, as it turns out was also on the cusp of the great changes that the fall of communism had in store for the world by the end of the 1980's.

This is also where the book begins and then proceeds in a reverse chronological fashion to cover 5 separate periods of history including first, the period of the People's Republic (1944-1983), second, the period encompassing World War II (1939-1947), third, World War I and the interwar period (1914-1939), fourth, history during the Partitions (1795-1918) and fifth, historic Poland (history prior to 1795).

Davies then returns to 1983 to demonstrate the "past in Poland's present" or as Davies more eloquently puts it, "Such is the burden of History in Polish consciousness, that any full appreciation of the Polish crisis requires a full examination of the way in which the chief actors on the political scene perceived their roles in relation to the nations traditions." The next chapter is (now) a misnomer entitled "Beyond History" in which Davies reflects on the state of affairs in 1983 and is looking forward to the not-to-distant future. This chapter was the last chapter of the First and Second Editions and, as it turned out, Davies did not have to wait long before the not-to-distant future arrived in 1989 in which the People's Republic melted away. This inspired a new chapter for the 3rd edition entitled "Liberation" and covers the period from 1983 to roughly 2000.

Davies' work has a two-fold purpose. The first purpose is to demonstrate that one who has recourse to history can more fully understand and appreciate the significance of present day events. That is not to say that the past predetermines the present, but it is to say the present loses its meaning and significance without its relation to the past.

The second purpose was to show that although much of Poland's past lies at the intersection of East and West (or to use Samuel Huntington's formulation, between the Western Civilization and the Orthodox Civilization), Poland's proper place is in the West and it was Davies' hope when he first published that Poland would move out of the Soviet orbit and back into the Western world. Those hopes were realized when Poland joined NATO and the EU.

Davies' work is not so much history as it is historical argument and, as such, is a fine historical argument. If one is looking for a more traditional history, I would recommend M.B. Biskupski's "The History of Poland" (short), or Adam Zamoyski's "The Polish Way" (medium) or Norman Davies' "God's Playground" (long).

Sometimes a fresh look at some old controversies

Davies ruffled feathers of academics especially with his perspective on the fate of Jews in Poland during WW II. Poles often are presumed guilty of "not doing enough" to help Jews escape the Nazis. Davies argues that Poles were also in need of help and not in any position to offer others much help. His argument conflicted with views generally held by Jewish intellectuals and others and he had claimed that their influence had him removed from a proposed teaching position at a university. In any case, the book should be read as a serious contribution to understanding Polish history, and not as a polemical threat to anybody's "ironclad" notions.

Historical framework for communist breakdown in Poland

This a very well researched, comprehensive piece of work that discusses the salient features of Polish history. It's worth reading just as a fairly short and very readable version of the Polish history that is written by a non-Pole. In addition, the author takes on the difficult task of trying to provide a historical perspective on the frustration of Poles put under the Soviet-imposed communist rule and, more specifically, on the historical roots of the Solidarity freedom movement. The original, inverted structure of the book (the most recent events first) serves these goals well but it may be frustrating for readers accustomed to the traditional chronological approach to history. Nevertheless, I liked this structure. I would recommend this book to any Pole and people interested in the history of Poland and Central Europe. In addition, this is a great reading for people of any nationality interested in the Soviet imperialism and in the historical reasons for its ultimate failure.

Thorough but not complete

The one thing I needed it did not cover much at all. The A/C Heater air flow control was not working. It did not cover how to trouble shoot the vacuum lines or canister. Luckily I was able to discover that the vacuum line had come loose where it connects to the top of the engine. The Haynes manual did not show this. I had to use a diagram of the vacuum system that I found at Tonkin Online Parts.

Great repair manual

I have used Hayes in the past for all my mechanic needs for my vehicles. I've already had to use it to figure out an anti-brake issue with the vehicle. I recommend Haynes repair manuals for those that are mechanically inclined and know something about auto mechanics. This is not a good repair manual for those who do not know much about mechanics.

Just bought a used Buick with some 'issues'. Seller delivered this Haynes manual in a few days. Now I got no more excuses for not working on Wifey's new old car. Already fixed the coolant light thingy and adjusted the thing-a-ma-bob do-hickey.........

Problem Solving Through Recreational Mathematics

I first became acquainted with this book about twenty years ago when it first appeared. Since it didn't fit into a standard niche in college mathematics curricula, it never really caught on and, before the Dover edition, was out of print for a number of years.
This was a shame, as this is both a wonderful and remarkable book. It has a broad appeal; amateur mathematicians, professional mathematicians, and puzzle buffs should all find something in it to interest them. It is both fun and rewarding at the same time. One can learn a great deal of mathematics from it. It also contains a method for solving linear Diophantine equations that I have never seen anywhere else.
The authors have added a chapter on probability which should further enhance this highly original work.

A gem and a steal

This is a fun puzzle-type book, but with a difference from most such books. In this book, you will really learn some interesting mathematics. The authors' way of presenting the material is very effective. First, they present a problem or puzzle for the reader to attempt to solve. Then they show the mathematics behind the problem. Then they lead the reader through the solution and show how the mathematics is used to make solving such a problem easier.

I have an engineering degree and a minor in mathematics, but this book introduced me to some new areas of mathematics. It also helped me understand some areas that had been confusing before, such as applications of modular arithmetic and linear Diophantine equations. I bought this book in hardback a few years ago for $38. This new Dover edition in paperback at $14.95 list is a steal.

The Textbook for the Math Class of your Dreams

Martin Gardner once asked why a whole math course couldn't be built around recreational math. If school districts ever allowed one to exist, this would be the textbook for the class. Recreational math gets a bad name, since most fear-conditioned parents react negatively to their kids "playing" anything in school after kindergarten, but a lot of real math can be learned efficiently and enjoyably through explorations like the ones in this book. Problem solving is the heart of mathematics, but not the "Do numbers 1 - 99 odd" kind of problem solving. A couple of substantial problems like "train problems" or "age problems" (both covered in Chapter 3) will give students better practice in algebra, arithmetic and logic than a chapter full of busy work.

What I love about this book is the playful attitude it takes to some very involved math concepts. Some chapters are literally playful: solitaire games and games of strategy are explored in great depth in Chapters 7 and 8. Nim can be played with a child, but the richness of the math involved in the strategy could occupy a college student.

Another thing I love is the sheer number of problems included to provide practice on a topic, and the progression of questions from the obvious to the very challenging (Questions are rated by difficulty). In-depth solutions to selected problems are included in each chapter, and many other problems have hints. Most are at least answered in the back of the book.

I have taken Mr. Gardner's suggestion to heart, and am using this book to challenge my private students with real, substantial math. From logic and graph theory to cryptarithmetic and coin-weighing problems, all the classics of challenging but fun math are here. Also see Don Cohen's "Calculus By and For Young People" for what can be achieved using a non-traditional approach.

About the Author
Alanna Jones is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist who has worked in a variety of settings using games for teaching and therapy. She has worked in psychiatric hospitals, as a church youth group leader, in therapeutic outdoor groups, and as a camp counselor with a variety of people. She has presented the popular TAG (Therapeutic Activities and Games) workshop in over 26 different cities across the country! Alanna found that when working in the field of Therapeutic Recreation there were few good books of useful, interactive games and activities for therapy. Most books were pen/pencil worksheets or outdoor oriented and required a large budget. This prompted her to write books that are useful, easy to use and full of fun, interactive therapeutic activities and games.

This is a GREAT book for Sp.Ed.Teachers,Teachers, Counselors,Church group leaders and families. Children, teens and adults can all learn more about themselves while having a good time. This book works on Self-Esteem, Coping Skills, Communication, Anger Management, Self-Discovery and Teamwork. Each game is prepared with Objectives, Audience, Group size, Materials, Description, Discussion prompts and Variations for 104 EXCITING GAMES. Most of these games can be played with ordinary household or classroom materials. Alanna Jones has also wtitten another HELPFUL and FUN BOOK called The Wrecking Yard

Repetitive!

If this book was titled "40 Activities..." I would give it 4-5 stars. Yes, many if not all of the activities require various materials, but for the most part they are everyday, common materials like straws, pens, paper, paper clips, etc. My problem with this book is the highly repetitive nature of the activities. The premise of the activities are the same with variations so small that it's a stretch to call them separate activities.
For example, in the Self-esteem section so very many of the activities call for items (envelopes, flower petals made from construction paper, balloons, etc.) to be passed around to members of the group in order to write a positive comment about the owner of the item being passed around. So, while the materials used are different the basic premise, as previously stated, is the same.
Here's a perfect example: One activity calls for each member to write his/her name on their respective envelope. Each envelope is then hole-punched and threaded onto a piece of string. The envelopes remain hanging throughout the various group sessions and members are encouraged to write positive comments about their group mates. They then put these comments in the respective member's envelope. Contrastly, another activity, calls for each member to write his/her name on their respective envelope which are then passed around to every other member who then writes a positive comment on a piece of paper and places in the respective member's envelope.
So, as you can see, the activities themselves are decent, but there is simply far too much repetition.
I simply think it would have been more honest to not indicate

This book is an excellent investment for a teacher

This book is an excellent investment for a teacher, camp counsellor, youth group leader anybody dealing with kids. You get all you're promised and more. I love the question prompts at the end of each activity! The kids have fun but then the discussion helps the lesson sink in.
