Nobel Prize Winner Seems To Be Hidden From Readers

I bought this book for all that seemed to be missing. This book won The Nobel Prize in 1999 for Literature, so what was missing? The book jacket had 3 quotes, all were about the author, and nothing was said about the book. I did not find this work anywhere on any bestseller list. I checked on the "Professional Reviews" and again they were odd. They seem to be of two types; explain nearly the entire book, or like the back of the jacket, they were confined to cryptic remarks about the Author, and on occasion the book itself. There is a huge distinction to be made between 100 "Chapters" and 100 "Stories". The inside jacket designates the enclosed as stories, and I would venture that anyone who reads the book would agree. Some stories share characters, but the brief tale told with shared characters is hardly sequential, this is also the exception to the stories rather than the rule. Historical knowledge of Germany or of the 20th Century is helpful but not required. The story about the USA landing on the moon while told from the perspective of a German, and within that narrator's time, does not require a degree in History. This book is tremendous. The 100 stories almost do read like chapters in spite of the fact they are not necessarily in chronological order. Short stories are notoriously difficult to write. The Author has created 100 of them, placed them within the confines of 100 years, and does so in a manner so clever and subtle, that by book's end, I felt that is what I read, a book, not a collection of short stories. This book is wonderful; it can be enjoyed as a historical narrative, or as brilliant piece of writing. The book is for anyone who likes to read. I just don't understand the lack of interest. It was noted that only 25,000 books were initially printed, that's virtually identical to Angela's Ashes, but a comparison of numbers of readers certainly seems to stop there, and that is truly a shame.

Grass, a master of moods

I have had the opportunity to read this book in its original language, German. I have also lived in Germany most of my life, have my whole family there (yes, i am a FOB), and go back for at least three months every year. Well, you might ask yourself, why is he telling me this? I have a very good reason to do so. Grass has achieved something that I have yet seen to be done by any author. He has perfectly portrayed the mood among Germans during the 20th century. Ask any German of any age. He will tell you the same. If you know nothing about Germany: Read this book! If you think that you know a lot about Germany: Read this book! If you are from Germany or have lived there: Read this book! If you like to read: Read this book! To sum it up: Read this book, because it will broaden your horizon of knowledge.

Germany's Past Century in the Foem of Short Stories

If you don't know German history, you probably won't enjoy this book. However if you do know the history of twentieth century Germany this book is worth the read. Some chapters are better than others. I guess it depends on one's interests. The chapter 1912 describes a young naval officer on a torpedo boot who describes the U-boots he sees. Is this officer Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz? It certainly is later in 1981. For myself, 1914-1918 were the best. They describe a conversation between Ernst Juenger and Erich Maria Remarque. Two famous German authors each with their own individual perspectives on the great war. Absolutely fascinating! Bottom line its an interesting book.

This episode gets all the stars!

This episode gets all the stars! If you’ve been with the series this far, you’re going to want to run and get this installment. This is the one where Patrick’s world is rocked when he realizes that the unthinkable has happened and he has fallen in love with his husband.

In this episode Patrick gets romantic:

"Your mouth is where my d*** wants to go to die."

Will gets what he’s always wanted:

"So I’ve had a version of this one fantasy since I was really young…"

And we, the readers, get to see these two work through it all.

First though, let’s all stand up and cheer as Ryan appears to have made good on his promise to leave town. Will has finally come to realize how bad Ryan was for him and how dysfunctional their relationship really was. He also sees how that relationship has caused even more trouble with the issues his mother and uncle have and have been projecting onto him. As clueless and as much of a pushover as Will has been, he is really starting to come into his own here. He is once again asserting himself with his family and he is growing more confident in his ability to direct his own life. The vulnerability and trust he shows when he is with Patrick is a far cry from the Will we have seen previously and he really grew on me in this episode. He is still a bit oblivious, but it is not all through his own fault anymore. Will relies and Patrick’s bluntness and he won’t ever assume that Patrick has feelings that he hasn’t expressed. Now on to Patrick.

Have I mentioned in prior reviews how much I love Patrick? Of course I did and I love him even more after this. He’s moving right up the list of my favorite m/m characters. Patrick is still Patrick, snarky and mostly sure of himself, which doesn’t make for the best bedside manner and doesn’t help matters when trouble arises at work. This installment, however, really focused on his feelings and his acceptance that he loves Will. He is struggling with those feelings, knowing that he told Will early on that there is no chance for a relationship and Will has accepted that. Now, Patrick dies just a little inside whenever the future divorce is mentioned. He accepts that he has broken their agreement, but is torn between letting Will know, or keeping quiet and allowing Will to move on and have the freedom to figure out how he wants to live his life after the whole Ryan mess.

Patrick opens up to Will with further details about his past abuse and Will vows to himself to keep Patrick close even after they are no longer married. Patrick may not have been able to find the words to tell Will how he feels, but he did manage to find a song. I’m old enough to remember the song Patrick plays for Will and it is one of the sappiest of 1970’s sappy love songs, but take a look at the lyrics and you’ll see how Patrick was baring his soul to Will.

Now regardless of the title, this isn’t all mushy, yearning. We were promised kink early on and this episode delivers. Those kinks Patrick expressed a fondness for, breath play and spanking, all play an integral part in Will’s secret fantasies and Patrick is more than willing to indulge in every one of them. The sex scenes were incredibly hot and kinky, yet still incredibly sweet.

Yes this is a serial, so I shouldn’t be shocked, but the authors leave it all off with an incredibly evil cliffie. I wouldn’t put it past Kimberly to have had something to do with what goes down, but the authors have set the scene for the penultimate installment, Meet the Mob, and the end of March cannot come soon enough for me!

I can't fight my feelings over this. #Love

This is the fourth episode in a serial novel, and should be read in sequence. I've read the first three and while the romance was slow to build--it truly began in the third episode--it is in full force now. While technically a novella, it's over 40K words--so it's a juicy read that'll keep you occupied for hours.

Summary of the past three books: Will and Patrick have lived in the honeymoon suite of the Tallgrass Hotel in Healing South Dakota ever since their drunken "I Do"s in Vegas in early November. It's now the beginning of January and they have finally consummated their marriage--twice. They cannot get a quickie divorce because doing so will cause Will to lose control of the Molinaro Trust--former mafia money that he has funneled into Good Works, a multimillion dollar humanitarian foundation. Patrick had lost his staff position in Atlanta and is now the chief neurosurgeon in the new Healing Hospital that Good Works has funded. Will had an emotionally abusive partner, Ryan, whose callous phone break-up triggered Will's Vegas bender, and Will's a recovering alcoholic and diabetic that Patrick has managed to keep healthy and sober for their entire marriage (barring the wedding night!).

In this episode, FIGHT THEIR FEELINGS, that's exactly what's going on. Will and Patrick have finally become sexually active, much to their mutual delight. Will has a lot of baggage to unload regarding sex, in part because his and Ryan's sex life was horrendous and in other part because his family has rather peculiar ideas about sex, and homosexuality.

Will felt guilty having relations with a person whom he didn't "love" but Patrick is someone that he does love--though he holds back from hoping/wishing/praying that they have a future together. Patrick continues to make it clear that he's only sticking around until they can manage to get divorced. But that's because Patrick doesn't want to admit that he's hopelessly in love with Will.

See, because he's fighting his feelings...

This is a real emotion-driven episode with both Will and Patrick airing their vulnerabilities and asking for absolution in the only way they can. I liked it so, so much. Also, the sexytimes. GAH! Smoking hot and not skimping on the deets. Expect a bit of kink to make an appearance. (I don't consider that a spoiler as it's part of the disclaimer at the front of the book.)

The connections deepen. Will and Patrick build strong bonds that both satisfy and frighten them. And, of course, just when I think these guys are FINALLY on track, well, Will's family manages to screw it all up. Again. Perhaps.

Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch" has QUITE SERIOUSLY been haunting me ever since I finished this episode. That song, that freaking song that always brings tears to my eyes, pretty much sums up Patrick's feelings for Will. So, yeah, I've been filled to the brim with melancholy, bittersweet, sentimental, impossible love for three days now. Thanks Leta and Alice.

As the series goes, it's just getting more and more delicious. Can't wait for the next episode.

OH. MY. GOSH!!! I have been waiting for this continuation to the serial for what feels like forever. Now that I have it, I WANT MORE!!! Seriously. It is not nice to keep me waiting! (Yeah, yeah. I know the definition of serial...but STILL!!!) lol

Will and Patrick have finally decided to let themselves relax a little. They truly begin spending time together and finding that they like the other person. Will had a tough past with Ryan, but he is finally starting to understand that his relationship with Ryan was not what he thought. He is realizing what a kind, generous, caring lover really is...in Patrick. The guys are starting to fall head over heels with each other, but both are afraid to admit it because they think the other doesn't want it. Men.

The story is brilliantly written. I am completely engrossed, and love the way the authors write both characters. I am able to see what makes each of them tick. I can't wait for the next Episode. Meeting the Mob is going to be interesting for sure! Thank god #6 is called Will and Patrick's Happy Ending, or else I would be spending all my time worrying until it came out! This is fabulous!

You have to read this - "one of the most complete books I've read."

When I purchased the book, I was not sure what to expect but I thought I would at least give it a try based on the strength of those quotes. I was not disappointed at all. This book is full of great content from front to back. You will not be disappointed either.
I have come across many books where the author makes one great point and then spends the next 3 chapters explaining that one point. This is not the case with this one. This book is packed full of great stuff. I feel very confident when I say that: this is one of the most complete books I've read in the self help category. It does not focus on just one area, it will develop your whole person.

This book gave me the competitive edge I was missing and it has far exceeded my expectations. You can tell that the author put a lot of thought and effort into writing this book. It is packed full of great quotes and quality content. There are quotes in this book that you will want to hang on your wall for daily inspiration for years to come.
This book changed my life. Thanks to it, I am seeing dramatic results and improvements in my life every day. I highly recommend it. It has been money well spent for me.

Neither strictly chronological, or exclusively a history, Into the Maelstrom investigates a wide range of improvisational tendencies: from surrealist automatism to stream-of-consciousness in literature and vocalization; from the free music of Percy Grainger to the free improvising groups emerging out of the early 1960s (Group Ongaku, Nuova Consonanza, MEV, AMM, the Spontaneous Music Ensemble); and from free jazz to the strands of free improvisation that sought to distance itself from jazz. In exploring the diverse ways in which spontaneity became a core value in the early twentieth century as well as free improvisation's connection to both 1960s rock (The Beatles, Cream, Pink Floyd) and the era of post-Cagean indeterminacy in composition, Toop provides a definitive and all-encompassing exploration of free improvisation up to 1970, ending with the late 1960s international developments of free music from Roscoe Mitchell in Chicago, Peter Brötzmann in Berlin and Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg in Amsterdam.
