Thompson can write

This is a book is a clear, concise study of the major debates in the area of the humanities, the social sciences, media and culture.

Academics do not write like Thompson anymore ( at least in critical theory). Thompson puts ideas in context, defines his terms, consider possible objections, gives examples.

The writer is generous to his readers by providing them with an intelligible text without sacrificing rigor.

Many informations. But you will be tired at the end.

For everyone who is interested in matters of ideology and public opinion it is a very useful guide into past and current discussion on the concept of ideology. In the second part of the book you will find quite interesting elaboration of the development of media industry based mainly on data from Braitain, neverthenless vey elucidating. Finally the author's media theory which is trying to consider the inner dynamics of media development against the mainstream of New-Left critics of the mass culture tyranny. The style very clear, so you can follow the author's pace of thoughts quite easy but you can find yourself quite bored going thru three fields of reaserch which will finish in final synthesis.

I Didn't Think They Printed Books Like This Any More

Where to start singing the praises?

How about the request that anyone who finds an inaccuracy or misprint contact the publisher, with an address for that right next to the "this book is lost, return it to:" page?

Everything from Algebra to Zinc sheeting gauge tables is in this book, which fits in the space from the pad on the base of my thumb to the end of my little finger in length and the width of my hand when closed. Its about as thick as the end joint on my index finger, and it's packed with stuff you'll need at some time or other.

Need to identify a fastener or bolt? Done. Want to know how much dirt is in that pile over there (or conversely, how much of your driveway will be lost to x cubic yards of dirt)? Done. Log tables (remember them)? Done. Want to learn to tie a bowline and a sheepshank? Done. Need the melting point of lead? done. Need to know exactly how many "6 inch wide" boards you'll need for your deck that you sized in real inches? Done.

Time zones? Done. Area codes? Done. Military ranks so you don't look like an arse when you meet a person on active service? Done. Need to know what day your wife's birthday will fall on every year from now 'til next muckspreading? Done.

Take the stuff you used to get in the ends of diaries when we were kids. Add all the stuff you find in the appendices of Big-ass Dictionaries. Add in the actually useful stuff from the old OU Science Data Book. Now pack it all in a pocket-sized book.

This will bring out the inner eight year old in everyone and is about as useful as a Swiss Army Knife welded to a Leatherman Wave.

And it is all organized into sensible sections. If you need something mathy, you'll find it in a "math" section. Need a day/date and you'll be wading into the perpetual calendar. There's sections on carpentry, computers, cars. If you walk into a lamppost while reading, there's a section on first aid, and once properly recovered you'll be able to identify various properties of the post by looking up the metals section.

Six stars.

Sure, in today's digital age, one could easily and quickly look up facts or information with their phones.. But a signal isn't always available, and only 46% of Americans even *own* a smartphone. I'm among those 54%, and this is so immensely chock-full with facts and information that I probably still won't even need one. Now all that's left is to familiarize myself with the table of contents..

Amazing and fun, especially if you're techno, mechanical, or scientific.

You might actually use it. Either way, it's hard to put down. A fun gift for the right person, including possibly yourself.

Keep it in the guest bathroom.

This 4th Edition is expanded (by 12%), updated, and better indexed. But it's still 3.2" x 5.4" x 0.9"

Reviews of the previous Pocket Ref - 3rd Edition are the highest I've seen for anything on amazon. (You can also "Look Inside" the 3rd edition on amazon.)

Indeed, seeks the heart of wisdom.

This book is true to its title~ The authors truly seek the heart of wisdom by skillfully blending Buddhist teachings on insight meditation practice with conventional knowledge, without loosing authenticity. The book is extremely informative and instructive for beginners. For those who are attracted to this practice, but still are not convinced enough to actually sit and accept this practice ( looking for rationale), this book is very convincing through its highly eloquent, balanced, pragmatic, and wise voice... And if you are already practicing then this book further motivates you to work through various hindrances and stick to this practice. How I see it, anyone with an open and receptive heart will absorb the wisdom of the words here and be encouraged to develop and expand their own practice.

Helpful understanding of the hows and whys of meditation

I love the simple and direct understanding the authors impart as to how to begin Vipassana, the core elements and components. This seems like a training manual, for those of us who cannot attend a training seminar. I really appreciate the deepening of my understanding in just the first few pages. Mindfulness has made a huge difference in the way I see m own life and how i work with clients in psychotherapy. I highly recommend this bok, and anything by Jack Kornfield.

Collins hasn't tied her future to a specific date, or weighted it down with too much finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight to the death.Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the importance of holding on to one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a new Theseus, is cold, calculating and still likable. She has the attributes to be a winner, where Peeta has the grace to be a good loser.It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. The State of Panem—which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and its citizens complacent—may have created the Games, but mindless television is the real danger, the means by which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who fail to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, it makes this the right book at the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and all our sentences will end with the same rise as questions. When Katniss is sent to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked in front of them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that I'm no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures who are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn't just the contestants who risk the loss of their humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not only the Games but the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this is the first book in a series, not everything is resolved, and what is left unanswered is the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We know what she has given up to survive, but not whether the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to learn more.

Grade 7 Up -In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. Her hunting and tracking skills serve her well when she is then cast into the nation’s annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death where contestants must battle harsh terrain, artificially concocted weather conditions, and two teenaged contestants from each of Panem’s districts. District 12’s second “tribute” is Peeta, the baker’s son, who has been in love with Katniss since he was five. Each new plot twist ratchets up the tension, moving the story forward and keeping the reader on edge. Although Katniss may be skilled with a bow and arrow and adept at analyzing her opponents’ next moves, she has much to learn about personal sentiments, especially her own. The book came packaged nicely and arrived on time. As a huge Hunger Games fan, I was extremely excited to receive this book. I've been completely obsessed with Hunger Games for several years, never miss any books or movies of it. The author’s imagination is amazing which draw me into the story so completely that it's hard to put the book down. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. All in all, this is a really good book which are a great gift for every Hunger Games fan!

Unexpected Direction, but Perfection (Potential spoilers, but pretty vague)

This was a brilliant conclusion to the trilogy. I can only compare it to "Ender's Game" - and that is extremely high praise, indeed.

When I first closed the book last night, I felt shattered, empty, and drained.

And that was the point, I think. I'm glad I waited to review the book because I'm not sure what my review would have been.

For the first two books, I think most of us readers have all been laboring under the assumption that Katniss Everdeen would eventually choose one of the two terrific men in her life: Gale, her childhood companion or Peeta, the one who accompanied her to the Hunger Games twice. She'd pick one of them and live happily ever after with him, surrounded by friends and family. Somehow, along the way, Katniss would get rid of the awful President Snow and stop the evil Hunger Games. How one teenage girl would do all that, we weren't too sure, but we all had faith and hope that she would.

"Mockingjay" relentlessly strips aside those feelings of faith and hope - much as District 13 must have done to Katniss. Katniss realizes that she is just as much a pawn for District 13 as she ever was for the Colony and that evil can exist in places outside of the Colony.

And that's when the reader realizes that this will be a very different journey. And that maybe the first two books were a setup for a very different ride. That, at its heart, this wasn't a story about Katniss making her romantic decisions set against a backdrop of war.

This is a story of war. And what it means to be a volunteer and yet still be a pawn. We have an entirely volunteer military now that is spread entirely too thin for the tasks we ask of it. The burden we place upon it is great. And at the end of the day, when the personal war is over for each of them, each is left alone to pick up the pieces as best he/she can.

For some, like Peeta, it means hanging onto the back of a chair until the voices in his head stop and he's safe to be around again. Each copes in the best way he can. We ask - no, demand - incredible things of our men and women in arms, and then relegate them to the sidelines afterwards because we don't want to be reminded of the things they did in battle. What do you do with people who are trained to kill when they come back home? And what if there's no real home to come back to - if, heaven forbid, the war is fought in your own home? We need our soldiers when we need them, but they make us uncomfortable when the fighting stops.

All of that is bigger than a love story - than Peeta or Gale. And yet, Katniss' war does come to an end. And she does have to pick up the pieces of her life and figure out where to go at the end. So she does make a choice. But compared to the tragedy of everything that comes before it, it doesn't seem "enough". And I think that's the point. That once you've been to hell and lost so much, your life will never be the same. Katniss will never be the same. For a large part of this book, we see Katniss acting in a way that we can only see as being combat-stress or PTSD-related - running and hiding in closets. This isn't our Katniss, this isn't our warrior girl.

But this is what makes it so much more realistic, I think. Some may see this as a failing in plot - that Katniss is suddenly acting out of character. But as someone who has been around very strong soldiers returning home from deployments, this story, more than the other two, made Katniss come alive for me in a much more believable way.

I realize many out there will hate the epilogue and find it trite. At first, I did too. But in retrospect, it really was perfect. Katniss gave her life already - back when she volunteered for Prim in "The Hunger Games". It's just that she actually physically kept living.

The HBO miniseries, "Band of Brothers", has a quote that sums this up perfectly. When Captain Spiers says, "The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it."

But how do you go from that, to living again in society? You really don't. So I'm not sure Katniss ever really did - live again. She just ... kept going. And there's not really much to celebrate in that. Seeing someone keep going, despite being asked - no, demanded - to do unconscionably horrifying things, and then being relegated to the fringes of society, and then to keep going - to pick up the pieces and keep on going, there is something fine and admirable and infinitely sad and pure and noble about that. But the fact is, it should never happen in the first place.

And that was the point, I think.

Beautiful set at a reasonable price.

I love the series and loaned it out to several friends and family. By the time the books made it back to me they were more than a little beat up. I passed them along to a young cousin of mine. When I saw this set I knew I could buy it to keep for myself. The foil set is gorgeous and even though they are just paperbacks and will get creased with time the case will stay nice.

This is a series that is meant for young adults but it turned out to be a fun, fast read for me. I highly recommend this to anyone, it is a pop culture phenomenon for a reason.

Would give even less if it were possible. The purpose of a review is to summarize large amounts of information. This book explicitly does not do this, instead wanting you to "conceptualize" information that is rarely alluded to, and never stated. It basically tells you what you should study, someplace else. Save your money and buy AORN standards.
