This is the last Book (installment) of I Remember You series. Can Derek forgive himself? And how does this remembering influence his current relationship with Alex? And can Nancy make peace with herself and overcome her fear of success?

All But My Life: A Memoir, by Gerda Weissmann Klein

All But My Life is the unforgettable story of Gerda Weissmann Klein's six-year ordeal as a victim of Nazi cruelty. From her comfortable home in Bielitz (present-day Bielsko) in Poland to her miraculous survival and her liberation by American troops--including the man who was to become her husband--in Volary, Czechoslovakia, in 1945, Gerda takes the reader on a terrifying journey.

Gerda's serene and idyllic childhood is shattered when Nazis march into Poland on September 3, 1939. Although the Weissmanns were permitted to live for a while in the basement of their home, they were eventually separated and sent to German labor camps. Over the next few years Gerda experienced the slow, inexorable stripping away of "all but her life." By the end of the war she had lost her parents, brother, home, possessions, and community; even the dear friends she made in the labor camps, with whom she had shared so many hardships, were dead.

Despite her horrifying experiences, Klein conveys great strength of spirit and faith in humanity. In the darkness of the camps, Gerda and her young friends manage to create a community of friendship and love. Although stripped of the essence of life, they were able to survive the barbarity of their captors. Gerda's beautifully written story gives an invaluable message to everyone. It introduces them to last century's terrible history of devastation and prejudice, yet offers them hope that the effects of hatred can be overcome.

Review

“Soul searching and human . . . A moving personal testament to courage.” ―Herbert Mitgang, The New York Times

“An unforgettable reading experience . . . All But My Life is one of the most beautifully written human documents I have ever read. In this respect it is as sensitive and 'disturbing' a story as is The Diary of Anne Frank.” ―Library Journal

“Gerda Weissmann Klein moves you, and not just because the story she can tell is so horrific. It is the passion with which she looked through the horror and found a heart-felt and basic goodness in humanity . . . All But My Life is filled with wonderful acts of decency and normalcy, even as she describes three years in labor camps and three months of a forced winter march from Germany to Czechoslovakia.” ―Royal Ford, The Boston Globe

About the Author

Gerda Weissmann Klein was born in Bielsko, Poland, in 1924, and now lives in Arizona with her husband, Kurt Klein, who as a U.S. Army lieutenant liberated Weissmann on May 7, 1945. The author of five books, she has received many awards and honorary degrees and has lectured throughout the country for the past forty-five years. Kurt and Gerda are the authors of The Hours After: Letters of Love and Longing in War's Aftermath, published by St. Martin's Press. One Survivor Remembers (a production of Home Box Office and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum), winner of an Emmy Award and the Academy Award for documentary short subject, was based on All But My Life.

All But My Life
Part OneChapter 1THERE IS A WATCH LYING ON THE GREEN CARPET OF THE LIVING room of my childhood. The hands seem to stand motionless at 9:10, freezing time when it happened. There would be a past only, the future uncertain, time had stopped for the present. Morning-9:10. That is all I am able to grasp. The hands of the watch are cruel. Slowly they blur into its face.I lift my eyes to the window. Everything looks unfamiliar, as in a dream. Several motorcycles roar down the street. The cyclists wear green-gray uniforms and I hear voices. First a few, and then many, shouting something that is impossible and unreal. "Heil Hitler! Heil Hitler!" And the watch says 9:10. I did not know then that an invisible curtain had parted and that I walked on an unseen stage to play a part in a tragedy that was to last six years. It was September 3, 1939, Sunday morning. We had spent a sleepless night in the damp, chilly basement of our house while the shells and bombs fell. At one point in the evening when Papa, Mama, my brother Arthur, then nineteen, were huddled in bewildered silence, my cat Schmutzi began to meow outside in the garden and Arthur stepped outside to let her in. He had come back with a bullet hole in his trousers."A bullet?""There is shooting from the roofs, the Germans are coming!"Then, in the early gray of the morning we heard the loud rumbling of enemy tanks. Our troops were retreating from the border to Krakow, where they would make their stand. Their faces were haggard, drawn, and unshaven, and in their eyes there was panic and defeat. They had seen the enemy, had tried and failed. It had all happened so fast. Two daysbefore, on Friday morning, the first of September, the drone of a great many German planes had brought most of the people of our little town into the streets. The radio was blasting the news that the Germans had crossed our frontier at Cieszyn and that we were at war! Hastily, roadblocks had been erected. Hysteria swept over the people and large numbers left town that day.I had never seen Bielitz, my home town, frightened. It had always been so safe and secure. Nestled at the foot of the Beskide mountain range, the high peaks had seemed to shelter the gay, sparkling little town from intruders. Bielitz was charming and not without reason was it called "Little Vienna." Having been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before 1919, it still retained the flavor of that era. Almost all of Bielitz' inhabitants were bilingual; Polish as well as German was spoken in the stores. In the center of the city, among carefully tended flower beds, stood its small but excellent theater, and next to it the Schloss, the castle of the Sulkowskys, the nobility closely linked to the Imperial Hapsburgs.Nothing in my lifetime had ever disturbed the tranquility of Bielitz. Only now, when I saw people deserting it, did I realize how close, dangerously close we were to the Czechoslovakian frontier; only twenty-odd miles separated us from Cieszyn. There had been talk of war for many weeks, of course, but since mid-August our family had been preoccupied with Papa's illness. Mama and I had been away in Krynica, a summer resort, from early June until the middle of August. Papa and Arthur had been unable to accompany us, and we returned when we received a telegram from Papa, suggesting we come home because of the gravity of the international situation. It had been somewhat of a shock to see how ill Papa looked when he met us at the station. His right arm was bothering him and Mama, alarmed, had called the doctor. The doctor diagnosed the illness as a mild heart attack and Papa was put to bed immediately. The following day two specialists were summoned to Papa's bedside. That same day we received a cable from Mama'sbrother Leo, who was in Turkey. It read: "Poland's last hour has come. Dangerous for Jews to remain. Your visas waiting at Warsaw embassy. Urge you to come immediately."Mama stuck the cable in her apron pocket, saying, "Papa is ill, that is our prime concern."Papa was to be spared excitement and worry at all costs, and visitors were cautioned not to mention the possibility of war to him. Mama little realized the fate we all might have been spared had she not concealed the truth from Papa. Yet on Friday morning, September 1, when German planes roared through the sky, Papa, who had been ill for two weeks, came face to face with reality. It was a tense day. I spent most of it in my parents' bedroom and instinctively stayed close to Papa.As that first day drew to a close, nobody touched supper, no one seemed to want to go to sleep. Mama sat in a chair near Papa's bed, Arthur and I watched from the window. Horses and wagons loaded with refugees continued to roll toward the East. Here and there a rocket, like blood spouting from the wounded earth, shot into the evening sky, bathing the valley in a grotesque red. I looked at my parents. Papa appeared strange, almost lifeless. The yellow flowers on Mama's black housecoat seemed to be burning. Outside, the mountain tops were ablaze for a moment, then they resounded with a thunderous blast that made the glass in the windows rattle like teeth in a skeleton's head. Everything was burning now. I looked at Mama again. Her soft, wavy, blue-black hair clung to her face. Her large, dark eyes seemed bottomless against her pale skin. Her mobile mouth was still and alien. The red glow was reflected in each of our faces. It made hers seem strange and unfamiliar. There was Mama, burning with the strange fire of destruction, and in the street the horses and wagons, the carts and bicycles were rolling toward the unknown. There was a man carrying a goat on his back, apparently the only possession he had. On the corner several mothers were clutching their infants to their breasts, and near them an old peasant woman crossed herself. It was as if the world had come to an end in that strange red light. Then, all of a sudden, Papa spoke to me."Go, call the family and find out what they are doing."I went downstairs. I sat down next to the phone with a long list of numbers. I started at the top and worked to the bottom, but there were no answers. The telephones kept ringing and ringing. I pictured the homes that I knew so well, and with each ring a familiar object or piece of furniture seemed to tumble to the floor.I became panicky. It seemed as though we were alone in a world of the dead. I went back upstairs. My parents and Arthur apparently had been talking. They stopped abruptly."Nobody answered, isn't that right?" Papa asked. I could not speak. I nodded. There was no longer any pretense. Papa motioned me to sit down on his bed. He embraced me with his left arm."Children," he said, "the time has come when I have to say what I hoped I would never have to say. I remember as if it were yesterday the cries of the wounded and the pale faces of the dead from the last war. I didn't think it possible that the world would come to this again. You believed I could always find a solution for everything. Yet I have failed you. I feel you children should go. Mama just told me that Mr. and Mrs. Ebersohn have asked to take you with them to look for refuge in the interior of Poland. I am sick when you most need my strength. I want you to go, children. I command you to go! His voice had assumed a tone of authority that I had never heard before. I saw Arthur look up startled at the mention of his girl friend's parents. More than ever he looked like Mama, but somehow he reminded me of Papa as he stood there tall, erect, and determined.Almost without hesitation, he said, "No! We are going to stay together."My parents' eyes met. I had a feeling there was relief and pride in their faces."I hoped you would say that," Papa said brokenly, "not for my sake, but because I hate to cast out my children to complete uncertainty. I believe that God will keep us together and under the roof of our house."He dropped back exhausted on his pillows. The effort hadbeen too much for him, and sudden stillness fell over the room. Strangely, all sound ceased outside as well and we noted that the sky was no longer red.
When I awoke the next morning everything was as peaceful as ever. The sun shone so brightly in my room. The fall flowers in our garden were in full bloom. The trees were laden with fruit. In my room everything was as it had always been, and what's more, even Papa was out of bed. His arm was in a sling, but he was up, and it seemed so wonderful I was sure the night before had all been a nightmare. No, not quite, because in my parents' faces I could read something that hadn't been there yesterday. When we met downstairs for breakfast everybody seemed cheerful. Papa was joking. Mama joined in this seemingly carefree banter. The maid had left to be with her relatives. Papa jokingly asked me whether I wanted the job. Nobody mentioned the war. I walked to the radio and turned it on. There was a sharp click, but no sound. I tried the phone, the lights, but all electricity was off. In a way that was good. There was no contact with the outside world. It was a wonderful, peaceful Saturday. But evening brought fury to the end of that last peaceful day. Sporadic shooting started from the rooftops, an attempt at delaying the enemy while our army retreated to Krakow. We looked for shelter in our cellar and sat there through the night. Toward morning the shooting stopped altogether and the vehicles of the Polish army ceased to roll. We came up from the cellar for a cup of tea in the living room. As I sat down on the couch near the window I could see the people outside in an obviously gay and festive mood, talking and laughing, carrying flowers, and everywhere the clicking of cameras."Mama, look," Arthur said. "Do you suppose-?" and he broke in the middle of the sentence, not daring to say what seemed imposs...

So Lucky to have Found This Book
By Jeane McKenna
I have read many books about the Nazis and the Holocaust. This book was recommended by an old school friend with whom I was recently reunited. As kids we never talked about things like the war, but 50 years later we realized that our families came from the same Austro-Hungarian area. She recommended this wonderful book - a true story of a young girl who spent all of WWII in concentration camps. The prose is rich and bold, truthful and endearing. I highly recommend it!

One womans life in the Holocaust
By Courtney Rabideau
Gerda Weissmann is a Jew living in the part of Poland that was attached to the Austro-Hungarian Empire during WWI. She lives a comfortable life with her parents and her brother Arthur, and then on September 3, 1939 everything changes.
The Nazis have invaded Poland and Jews are not allowed to do almost anything they once could. Several months later Arthur is sent to a labor camp and except for a couple of letters is never heard from again. Things spiral out of control quickly after that for Gerda and her family. At first they are forced to move into the basement of their house and then they are forced to move to a ghetto.
After they are moved to the ghetto the family is separated and Gerda is forced to go to several concentration camps before finally being forced to go on a death march near the end of the war. In a little town in Czechoslovakia the march ends and an American force liberates the girls that had been forced to go on the march.
One of the Americans who liberated Gerda was Kurt Klein who was born in Germany, but sent to live in America with his older siblings once the war started. Gerda and Kurt soon fell in love and after about a year of meetings they finally got married and moved to Buffalo, New York where they started a family.
This is a good story for anybody who likes to read about the holocaust as well as anybody who likes stories of horrible things happening to people, but the people being able to overcome the pain and move on and be happy.

A very well written book on the holocaust.
By Jon Beaty
I just finished this book. Amazing would not describe to you what I felt. Gerda went through so much, the death walk, how she survived that,is in itself a miracle. She lived with discrimination, just for being a Jew. I read this book and am brought to the understanding of how very fortunate I am to have never gone through something like this. What a life we all live, everyday with food in abundance and all the things we have. How so many people don't realize how lucky they have it!

However, it is even more than that, being sad for all the Jews who died, and the ones who lived with the painful memories the rest of their lives. It is such a learning experience. Our children need to read these books, to know not to treat anyone unkind and never never to think of ones self as better than any other.

Thank you Gerda for writing this book! What a blessing it was to me, to be able to read your experience. I am so horrified people had to endure these experiences. Nobody should ever have to go through those experiences.

A fine tale of witchcraft and transformation
By Samuel Rafael
"His Maidenhood," by Cooper is another excellent novella by an author who specializes in such highly erotic tales. With a fertile imagination, the author has penned a story of witchcraft, chivalry and gender transformation that has what it takes to deeply stimulate the reader's fantasies.

About the Author
A graduate of Duke University, ANDREW SKURKA is a sponsored long-distance backpacker, paid speaker, and writer. He has hiked 25,000-plus miles since 2002, most recently on a 4,700-mile loop around Alaska and the Yukon. Named "Adventurer of the Year" by National Geographic Adventure (describing him as "a Gen Y version of Thoreau") and "Person of the Year" by Backpacker Magazine, he was also featured in Outside and Men's Journal. Skurka has appeared in numerous newspapers and television broadcasts.

I wrote this book from the perspective of an unapologetic Ultimate Hiker, which I define as a backpacker who simply loves to walk. We maximize our on-trail comfort by packing light; we move efficiently from dawn to dusk; and we consider the physical and mental challenges inherent in this style as part of our backcountry experience. Our antithesis is the Ultimate Camper, who hikes only a very short distance in order to do something else, like fishing, journaling, or birding. Neither approach is superior to the other—it’s simply personal preference—but our contrasting styles have major consequences for our gear, supplies, and skills.

My target reader is one who at least sometimes wants to be more like an Ultimate Hiker. You need not take this approach on every future trip or take it to the extreme that I do, but you must want to enjoy the hiking component of your back- packing trips more. This book may be most valuable for beginners and intermediates, who are too often relegated to the status of Campers-by-Default. These backpackers lack the knowledge and skills to pack lightly and move efficiently, which makes hiking more strenuous and less fruitful than it should be. To avoid a sufferfest, they instead opt to camp.

I have intentionally refrained from describing this text as a “lightweight backpacking” book. Although weight is an important consideration for the Ultimate Hiker, we must also be concerned with the comfort, safety, durability, efficiency, and best use of our gear. Moreover, it’s possible to go “stupid light,” whereby desperate weight savings can have adverse effects.

My hope is that this book will become the go-to manual for back-packing how-to, a modern successor to Colin Fletcher’s The Complete Walker. An original 1968 copy of that classic sat on the corner of my desk for inspiration while I wrote this manuscript. I wanted my book to be credible, informative, and occasionally just a good read. And while my recommendations are based on my extensive hiking experience, I’m not a backpacking guru—remember that you must always exercise your own judgment in evaluating the applicability and utility of the information in this book based on your own ability, experience, and comfort level. I readily admit that there are alternative tools and techniques that will achieve similar outcomes.

At the risk of outdating this text quickly, I felt that it was important to include specific brands, products, prices, and weights. On numerous occasions, I advocate the use of unconventional items—like frameless backpacks, tarps and tarp tents, and alcohol stoves—that are not made by conventional out- door companies or sold by conventional outdoor retailers. But by focusing on the gear type—not on the specific product—I hope that the information in this book will remain valuable long after the prod- uct itself disappears from catalogs and store shelves.

Truly Useful
By Clarke Green
My first backpacking trip was a hike to a trail shelter in Shenandoah National Park in the early seventies. My brother and I carried frame-less canvas backpacks with webbing shoulder straps that my dad padded with upholstery foam. I don't recall the sleeping bags or much else about the gear we used because my brother and I were much more interested in the creek near the shelter.

Dad poured over Colin Fletcher's new book The Complete Walker and so did I. We studied his techniques and emulated them. We wrote away for catalogs and made a few pilgrimages to Vienna Virginia from our home in Fall's Church to a backpacking and camping gear shop (what was the name of that place?) to buy what we could afford and that wasn't much.

Forty years later we are inundated with a torrential stream of gear and advice making the `right' choice of either nearly impossible. Colin Fletcher's simple gospel has fractured into dogmatic schisms, each with their holy book, magazine or website. Now there are backpackers, lightweight backpackers, ultralight backpackers and many flavors in between. I've read many backpacking books, tons of articles and blog posts and have grown tired of their often circular logic, rehashed advice and wondered if advertising dollars skewed their opinions.

Andrew Skurka's new book The Ultimate Hiker's Gear Guide will change the way how we sling a pack on our backs and hoof it into the wild just as Fletcher's Complete Walker once did. Fletcher's first books recorded his monumental treks (The Thousand Mile Summer and The Man Who Walked Through Time) and these expeditions resulted in The Complete Walker. Skurka's stunning 30,000 miles of trekking over the past decade have resulted in The Ultimate Hiker's Gear Guide. His writing is as focused, practical and essential as his twenty pound pack - there's nothing in it you don't need.

Skurka's writing may lack Fletcher's prosaic warmth but it's a great counterpoint to a lot of outdoor how-to books that, in their attempt at warmth, become cloying and unfocused.

The first section of the book asks and answers the questions that many don't think to ask until they are out on the trail with too much and/or too little gear, blistered feet, and soaking wet with no hope of getting dry; why am I doing this? Skurka uses his first real backpacking experience (a through hike of the Appalachian trail!) to explain what you are getting yourself into. He offers direction and advice that, if heeded, will save readers a great deal of discomfort.

An extensive analysis of the construction, function and use of gear follows. Skurka explains why and how things ought to work in a way that makes choosing gear relatively painless. While he does mention of specific models and manufacturers he goes well beyond the model number. The final section of the book offers gear lists for several different environments.

If you don't think this sounds like anything new in one way you are right; there isn't much new information in the guide because you don't really need new information. When the Complete Walker was published forty plus years ago there were only a handful of books on the subject; now the amount of information out there can bring your trip planning and gear research to a standstill of indecision.

In this age of limitless information I value expert advice and observation presented between the covers a book. Those covers ward off distractions and focus our attention on information that really matters.

The Ultimate Hiker's Gear Guide is my new go-to resource for backpacking gear information: it's truly useful.

Worthwhile for both beginner and experienced hikers
By Michael Brochstein
I had my doubts when I first bought this book. My background is that I am an experienced hiker / hike leader (but not backpacker), long time avid reader of Backpacker magazine (and other relevant material), WFA graduate etc etc. I figured that the parts of this book that covered topics relevant to hiking would simply be review for me. I was wrong. While I was familiar with a fair amount of what is covered in the book, there was more than enough that I learned to make reading it worthwhile (and it is a fast reading book).

This book should not be thought of as a complete guide to hiking, the only book you'll ever need. It concentrates on gear and clothing (hence its name). It will not teach you how to read/use a trail or topographical map or a compass, GPS, Wilderness First Aid, physical conditioning, and plenty of other types of knowledge that could be worthwhile to know when one is hiking or backpacking.

One other reviewer thought that a lot of the text was like reading "techno babble" and yes, a fair amount of the text discusses the technical and practical attributes of various gear and clothing options. This is, after all, as the title says, a book about gear. Likewise, Consumer Reports doesn't simply say that item X is better than item Y, it also explains the issues that led to their ratings. I think that most people interested in learning about the various gear and clothing options for hiking/backpacking will find the level of "techno babble" to be both reasonable and worthwhile (but your mileage may vary). Overall I think the author is very very good at explaining in plain english the relevant technical aspects of the gear/clothing discussed. If you're making the gear/clothing decisions then the material in this book is quite relevant.

The author has strong opinions about clothing and gear (he tends towards the ultra-light end of gear preferences) and at times will share them with the reader while he explains various gear and clothing options. While the author certainly has more experience than I do and is quite reasonable and logical with his reasoning about his preferences I believe that while some of his preferences may indeed be best for him, there can be excellent reasons why someone else (including me) could make different choices. Fortunately, the author is good at fairly discussing the various options even if he seems to have definite preferences.

Sets a new standard for UL hiking books
By Dean F.
I'm an experienced ultralight hiker, which is important since I'm reviewing this book as a source for ULTRALIGHT hiking. And I have to say that it sets a new standard- it will probably come to be considered the UL version of Colin Fletcher's "The Complete Walker." If I were reviewing it as a hiking source in general it would probably only get four stars because it leaves out a lot of information on heavyweight gear. Nonetheless it deserves a place on any hiker's bookshelf.

In my opinion the previous standard-setting book for UL hiking was Ryan Jordan's "Lightweight Backpacking and Camping", which I have also reviewed on Amazon, and which oddly enough Andrew also reviewed here on Amazon! It is important to note that this is a very small field- I know of at most a dozen works on this fringe subset of hiking, and a large portion of those are small cartoon-style works by Mike Clelland and similar authors. (Mike's books are exceptional, actually, but limited in scope.) So this book certainly benefits from a lack of competition.

That said, it is excellent. Obviously, it is published by National Geographic. This is important because it means that it benefits from excellent editing, unlike most other works on the subject. The layout is quite superb and intuitive. Andrew became involved with National Geographic through some of his epic hikes, and it is important to understand just what kind of guy he is. He has hiked coast-to-coast. He thru-hiked across the Mojave then north up the PCT to catch the PNW trail east to Glacier NP, then south down the CDT back to his start point- this is the hike, known as "The Great Western Loop", that earned him a spot as a National Geographic Explorer of the Year. (Because just hiking the triple crown wasn't enough for him.) Most recently he hiked a large loop around the state of Alaska and the Yukon. Google him and check out his website. He isn't just some hack writing a book.

Early on Andrew lays out that he differentiates between hikers and campers. Hikers like to move, they like to hike long hours and the only thing they really do in their shelters is sleep. Campers on the other hand like to make an elaborate "base camp" and spend time there, go fishing, or do day-hikes from it. Clearly Andrew is a "hiker" and his book is thusly biased. (This entire discussion is included in the Amazon "Look Inside" feature.) He very forthrightly and honestly states that his way is not the only "right" way to hike, and that backpackers who are more on the hiking end than the camper end of the spectrum will find his book most helpful. He does endorse his philosophy of Continuous Forward Progress but again, he acknowledges that other people will have different goals. It is in this way that he differs from Ray Jardine, who to give credit pretty much started the ultralight movement and is probably a genius and polymath, but whose writing can be pedantic and arrogant.

Above all this book is an excellent overview of the state of the market in ultralight equipment and a discussion of ultralight techniques. It is NOT so detailed that it, for instance, gives instructions on how to pitch a tarp using trek poles- such things usually have dozens of variations and are easy to Google. Occasionally specific products are mentioned, mostly as examples and because people always ask Andrew what he uses. A more general discussion always dominates a given subject so that he book won't be obsolete in a few years as product lines are discontinued. He isn't just regurgitating the UL "party line" either- for instance he defends fleece as an insulation layer, saying that the benefits outweigh the extra weight penalty in most conditions (the exception being very cold and dry conditions, in which down is unsurpassed).

I will say that this isn't really a book meant for an experienced UL hiker- the truly experienced hiker already has his own opinions on these subjects- though I did enjoy it. It is best for hikers who are trying to learn a bit about this weird UL thing, or for beginners so that they don't fall prey to marketing hype. Even for experienced hikers, though, the discussion of waterproof/breatheable (WPB) membranes alone might be worth the purchase price. He also goes into some detail about fabric choices and down vs synthetic fill for sleeping bags and insulating clothes. Some reviewers thought that this was too detailed and weren't interested- perhaps they just wanted a list of products and brands that Andrew endorses- but these are areas where a little knowledge goes a LONG way and I urge them to educate themselves a bit. You probably don't need to know minutiae of ripstop vs Dyneema for making packs, but learning a little about fabrics, fills, and WPB membranes is not onerous and very helpful in guiding your purchases.

All of the typical subjects are covered- shelters, sleeping systems (not just bags but also pads, bivys, fill materials, etc.), food and cooking, hydration and water purification, footgear, trek poles, clothing and fabric choices, raingear, headgear, packs, etc.

Yes, you can probably learn almost all of this book's content by spending a few months digging through websites like BackPackingLight, but the book presents it all in a neat and well formatted form. And, frankly, you could probably learn a lot about most subjects on the internet if you invested enough time, but you would find yourself saddled with a LOT of hyperbole, grandstanding, and outright idiocy from such sources. No one can doubt Andrew's credentials, and he knows what he is talking about. That said, he writes in a very direct mode so if you are expecting flowery expositions like you get from Colin Fletcher you will be disappointed. I disagree that the book "reads like stereo instructions" as one reviewer put it, but it certainly isn't flowery.

So, currently this book is the pinnacle of a very small field.

But Owen isn't the only one who notices her. The mysteriously alluring Fox Holloway draws Kristyl's eye whenever he's around. And Clearwater High's chief mean-girl, Crystal Jamison, has her sights set on Kristyl and will stop at nothing to prove what Kristyl really is.

A witch.

Power comes at a price. Will Kristyl be able to pay it before it's too late?

Circle Magic
It's only a matter of time before everything Krissa Barnette knows and loves is destroyed.

Her father, absent for five years, returns to reveal the reason he left was to learn how to defeat a dangerous foe. His mysterious companion, Anya, possesses a wealth of knowledge about the fight but conceals many secrets.

But Krissa has secrets, too, including the reason why she and Owen Marsh have a connection. And it's difficult to keep the truth from Fox Holloway now that the three of them are linked by a binding ritual.

It's a race against time to enact the spell that will rid the world of Seth once and for all, but with threats coming from all angles, will Krissa and her friends succeed?

I loved every one of these books and highly recommend them.
By Amazon Customer
I have read them all and love them. Madeline has made the characters real and I rooted for them, cried for them and celebrated with them in spirit. I have just completed her 4th book and can't wait for the 5th. She hasn't let me down yet.

Fantastic books you won't want to put down
By Reags
I picked up the first book (Crystal Magic) on a kindle deal whilst on holidays and I could not put this book down! Once I finished, I was very relieved to see that books 2 and 3 were also available immediately (and book 4 has just been published separately to the box set).
Purchase this box set - you will want to follow the story of Krissa, a teenage girl who discovers that not only is she a witch but also psychic and that the small town she lives in has strong ties to the magical side of life.
The first book introduces us to all the characters; book 2 sees a twist in the story that is unexpected and 3 follows on from this. You do need to read this in order to keep the story line straight but the story will have you staying up late, turning pages then frantically flicking to the next book.
I am waiting with bated breath for book 5 to see where Krissa and the gang end up next. There are twists and turns and it's not all lightness - there are some very dark and sad moments as well. The characters are complex and you get to know them well.

Time and magic captivate.
By Kindle Customer
Fascinating adventure, good characters who grow as the story progresses. Interesting take on magic and time. Reading these one after another takes you on a journey that captures and keeps your interest. One of those series of books that are hard to put down. A story that can be read over and again and still keep your interest.

Highly recommended, insightful thorough knowledge
By Mr Barnaby
This book (it's more of a manual) should be in the hands of everyone that's interested in hand sewing leather. It is a bible of sorts and I keep going back to read it just because I adore it so much! The illustrations and instructions are detailed and easy to comprehend.
It literally is only about hand sewing so it won't go into different types of leather, dyes, glues, finishes etc that you'll have to understand regarding leather craft but for someone that wants to learn how to sew using the traditional laborious method, it will answer a lot of your questions. It will show you how to make a belt, how to sew around corners, sew circular items and join two pieces of shearling together among many other things.
Al Stohlman teaches in this book how to sew a twin needle method called a saddle stitch using a needle on both ends of the thread. You can also do this stitch with one needle (he tells you how also) but the twin needle is the stronger, neater and time intensive way which pays off in the end. A variation of the saddle stitch called a lock stitch isn't shown. Personally, the saddle stitch is the better of the two anyhow.
There's also directions on how to make a half stitching horse to help with holding your work steady so your hands are free to sew which is fantastic.

Excellent content, extremely well illustrated - a modern classic - the bible of hand sewing leather, but cheaply bound
By sir_isaac_newton
This is an excellent booklet (the print & binding quality is more like a comic book or magazine than a book) - a classic. Contains a lot of practical information in a very easy to digest format (mainly with clear drawings). Of course, it covers the American approach to such things, so it differs a little in the fine detail from traditional English saddlery techniques & tools but most of it is still relevant to both American & European/English leather crafters.

A little dated now but for hand sewing leather, little of consequence has changed - it is still a charming, useful, classic, gentle introduction to the craft. This is perhaps the book that all (esp. all American) leather craft beginners should start with. As a complement to this book, check out the excellent series of free youtube videos by Nigel Armitage, for more on tradition English hand sewing of leather and a modern update on materials & tools.

Better Than I Thought
By Jason Golod
This one is a little sleeper. I was a little hesitant ordering this one...even more so when I saw it in the box. It is certainly not the most impressive looking book in my collection, but it is soon to be one of my most treasured. I opened the book and didn't stop until I read through the whole thing. My interest in sewing leather comes from the desire to re-upholster the interior of a car of mine...I figured I would start with the steering wheel. This book gives you a no-nonsense approach to hand sewing just about anything you can think of...I from the looks of it, anything made using the techniques in this book will last longer than I will.
