Review
Japanese cuisine is often perceived as difficult to make and hard to obtain the ingredients. With this book, the authors want to change that perception. With an organized approach that will take readers from the basics to more involved menus, they provide all the information to make fabulous Japanese meals at home. Starting with an introduction that discusses not just the how-to but also the "why" of this style, they cover an impressive range of topics. Food sources, etiquette table settings, basic cooking rules, and much more are covered. Recipes include cold starters, soups, steamed and grilled dishes, as well as sweets. Each one is beautifully photographed and accompanied by detailed instructions and step-by-step photographs. Basic techniques are covered in a separate chapter that discusses cooking rice and cutting vegetables, fish and shrimp, blanching vegetables, and making dashi, kaeshi and vinegars. More than 90 recipes are included, and with their detailed instructions readers
will soon impress family and friends with this delicious cuisine at home. (Terry Peters North Shore News 2016-06-15)

A beautifully-illustrated guide to Japanese cuisine
By Bundt Lust
Out of the 20+ Japanese cookbooks I own (including the excellent Japanese Farm Food and Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen), this is truly one of the most helpful due to the step-by-step photos and clear explanations. I like that the Japanese names of the dishes are also included (and the meaning / origins) explained. The technique section is worth the cost of the book alone! You will find an overview of the aesthetics behind Japanese washoku cuisine, kitchen tools, ingredients, traditional table settings and etiquette.

Chihiro Masui and Hanae Kaede have done a wonderful job at making Japanese cuisine accessible to the (American) masses. I loved that the authors also differentiated between traditional Japanese cuisine and influence from foreign cuisine. Recipes are divided into six sections (starters, bowls and soups, vegetables and tofu, fried and grilled, rice and noodles, and sweets). Suggestions for readily available substitutions are also provided.

For several years, I have tried to master the art of rolling Japanese-style omelettes. I even brought home a gorgeous Japanese iron omelette pan from Japan with no luck, but thanks to the clear step-by-step photos, I finally feel like I'm one step closer to mastering the proper technique to make beautiful rolled omelettes. There are so many fascinating tidbits and tips that have helped me to better understand Japanese food (I took four cooking classes around Japan when I was working there previously in 2011), and I feel that I am a better / more confident home cook for it.

I highly recommend this for anyone new to Japanese cuisine; the step-by-step photos are truly helpful in understanding the basic preparation of common dishes such as chawanmushi, tamagoyaki, steamed dishes, wagashi, etc.

The Simplicity Of Delicious Japanese Home Cooking
By Tante Maren
I love Oriental and Eastern food and I have taught myself to make some of my family's favorite Chinese dishes over the years, but little did I know that Japanese food is much more than Sushi and just as delicious as our favorite Chinese until I started reading this Japanese Home Cooking Book and preparing many of these dishes myself.

The authors Chihiro Masui and Hanae Kaede have written and composed a perfect introduction to cooking Japanese in your home, exactly as the cooks of the house do in Japan. Japanese cooking has a true simplicity about it- most meals can be prepared in 30 minutes or less, and it isn't because they eat everything raw, but rather because they use minimal ingredients and slice everything so thin, that the cooking time is very short.

What I especially love about this cookbook is that there are gorgeous clear color photographs for every single recipe. Even better, there are step by step clear color photos in some of the recipes for anything more complicated or unfamiliar to prepare. In the back of the book are Basic Recipe And Techniques in step by step clear color photos to Prepare Rice, Cutting Vegetables, Cutting Fish, Slicing Filets, Cutting Shrimp, Draining Tofu, Blanching Vegetables, Simmering With A Drop Lid, Making Dashi, and even how to make the different Vinegars used in many of their dishes.

The beginning of the book gives you a history of what the Japanese cook and why. Meat is a western influence, as there isn't much land for cattle or farms, and of course the sea provides an abundance of their foods. I was shocked to read that the Japanese dislike food smells due to the high humidity and natural smells from the water. This makes them dry everything and dispose of the smelly parts of foods immediately, like fish scales.

I was also surprised that Sweets are not eaten as desserts, but any time with tea. The book covers Cold Starters, Bowls & Soups, Vegetables & Soy, Steamed & Simmered Dishes, Deep-Fried & Grilled dishes, Rice & Noodles and Sweets. The ingredients are minimal and you will find the plating and perfect cutting of the foods make the dishes look absolutely beautiful. A simple dish of Rice and Peas look like a work of art. So far, my family have fallen in love with Tempura, Salmon Teriyaki, many different noodles, Grilled Gyoza (just like Chinese potstickers only thinner wrap and more vegetables) and Korokke (Western influence of beef, potato and onion breaded and fried). This beautiful well organized book of delicious home style Japanese dishes all beautifully photographed in color earns a big 5 STARS.

A Comprehensive, Beautifully Crafted, Well Written Collection of Professional Quality Recipes for the Home Kitchen.
By Earth Spirits
What a great book. This is a wonderful and complete introduction to Japanese Food. I am half Japanese and grew up eating at my Aunt & Uncle's Japanese restaurant. I even worked there for several years while in college. He was trained in Japan as a French chef. They are both extremely good cooks and created a foundation for me to build upon. Many of the dishes dear to my heart are in this book. They includes mostly the same ingredients and preparation methods too. If you have been to Japan or even if you have not, you will probably find this a treasure trove of information!

The first thing that strikes me is how beautiful the photos are. Each dish has a completion photo to show you what the dish should look like and how to garnish it. Some more complex dishes include additional instructional photos to give a better idea of the preparation method. I think the balance between photos and text is "just right". This is how I like my cookbooks to be. "Aesthetically Efficient" and appropriate.

The second thing is how well the text is written. Obviously the authors are Japanese and the text is perfect English. The style of writing and grammar make reading the information contained both easy and interesting.
-First an introduction to each dish is given. This is a brief description that gives you an overall idea of what the dish is all about. Flavor, texture, temperature and use are usually covered.
-Then the Ingredients List in a bullet format. Measurements are in tbsp, tsp, ounces and cups with (metric) in non-distracting parenthesis beside.
-The Preparation Steps are in bold numbered list format. Well written and step-by-step.
-Recipes with additional instructional photos will be in alphabetical list format beside the Preparation Steps.
-Lastly and this is one of my favorite things about this cookbook is that most of the recipes also include a small gray "Notes" section at the bottom that is used to further clarify information about the recipe. In some recipes like "Nuta with Green Onions and Calamari" it is used to explain that you can use red, black and white miso and add sugar to sweeten. Then explains about Japanese wakegi onion and the subtle difference it has from most American green onions. Lastly it makes suggestions on how you can adjust the flavor sharper with a little Japanese mustard. These notes are valuable. They are same kinds of information that my Uncle would give to me to make the dish "exceptional". The notes from a professional chef. The details are the "secret ingredients".

The book is well organized and complete. You can easily prepare a simple single dish or a culmination of 5-8 smaller dishes. I remember several times when the president of a large motor company would visit the company plants in the US that when he was visiting the plant near our city he would eat at my Uncle's restaurant. I was working there several of those times. He was always accompanied by a host of body guards and 8-10 local plant executives. My uncle would prepare a 12 course meal plan that would be served with drinks and take well over 2 hours for the entire meal to be enjoyed. It would start with simple appetizers like Miso Soup, Wakame Sunomono, and Tofu. Then he would start working in dishes that contained more substantial ingredients like eggplant, potatoes, fish and meats. Then rounding out with some softer dishes like Chawan Mushi and Soba noodles. After a few hours of drinking, it was usually closed with a desert then perhaps some Ochazuke or Yaki Soba. Of course the rice bowls were always kept full. Of course he would always prepare more than necessary and the employees always got to enjoy small samples of the dishes they were helping to prepare and serve!

Ayesha is a twenty-something reporter in one of the world's most dangerous cities. Her assignments range from showing up at bomb sites and picking her way through scattered body parts to interviewing her boss's niece, the couture-cupcake designer. In between dicing with death and absurdity, Ayesha despairs over the likelihood of ever meeting a nice guy, someone like her old friend Saad, whose shoulder she cries on after every romantic misadventure. Her choices seem limited to narcissistic, adrenaline-chasing reporters who'll do anything to get their next story, to the spoilt offspring of the Karachi elite who'll do anything to cure their boredom. Her most pressing problem, however, is how to straighten her hair during the chronic power outages. Karachi, You're Killing Me! is Bridget Jones's Diary meets the Diary of a Social Butterfly, a comedy of manners in a city with none.

"In a world that often views Pakistani women one-dimensionally, Imtiaz shows the complexity of women trying to forge careers, find love and be a good friend." - Associated Press

"Refreshingly devoid of glosses and translations, Imtiaz's novel is unapologetically faithful to the cultural nuances from which it emerges." - Mint

"The novel is by no means a sensationalized account of the contemporary life of women like us; our heroine is remarkably unglamorous, as is her life. The reader who finds this salacious is simply out of touch with contemporary Pakistan." - Pique

About the Author
Saba Imtiaz is a journalist based in Karachi. Her work has appeared in the Guardian and the Christian Science Monitor. This is her first novel.

If you're a Karachiite you'll love it!
By Muhammad Shariq
Just finished this novel.

LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!

Saba has presented Karachi like it really is. Everything like the bumpy roads, coffee at espresso, stealing wifi, needing a ups, rickshaw walas manoeuvring trough lanes that don't even show up on google maps, the blast, the protests, the bootleggers, everything!

Such a keen sense of observation. I felt I was almost there.

Things have changed for the better in the past few years (no more "payya jams"!) but still.

I had goosebumps in the end. And when she finally hugged Saad, my eyes were moist.

I was so engrossed in her world. I could feel her pain and finally her joy.

I did feel sad though. Why did one of the most platonic relationships need to be turned into a regular one.

Also recalled the famous bollywood dialogue "kya aik larka aur larki dost nahee ho saktay"?

Anywho..

Lovely story!

Can't wait to read her next one.

Great summer read!
By Susan
Great way to get a feel for life in Karachi, as well as the life of a reporter, through the viewpoint of a female reporter (and oh by the way the author, Saba Imtiaz, is a female journalist living in Karachi). Funny and insightful, a great read. The only complaint is that she occasionally uses a phrase or sentence in Urdu (I think); you still kind of get the idea, but I would have liked a translation somewhere! Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Refreshing
By Amazon Customer
Saba Imtiaz has taken good care in keeping the narrative true to life in Karachi. The subtleties of her interactions with policemen, rickshaw drivers, guards etc leave a refreshing impression about a city where life moves at a very fast pace. Readers would find this book interesting in 50 years time as well, when it will have a historic element to life in karachi.

World of de Wolfe Pack: Trusting the Wolfe (Kindle Worlds Novella), by Lana Williams

Victorian Romance. Stabbed and left for dead in one of London’s most dangerous neighborhoods, Marcus de Wolfe is astounded when a woman resembling the angel from the famous family legend saves him. Once recovered, he shoves aside his angel’s captivating image to focus on his goal of stopping whoever is smuggling cargo on his ships.

Left penniless by her wastrel father, seamstress Tessa Maycroft doesn’t trust men, especially not the handsome earl with the golden eyes she saved. To keep others from facing the fate she barely escaped, she offers seamstress apprenticeships for impoverished girls, giving them a chance for a better life.

But when Marcus appears in her shop and insists there’s a terrible connection between her girls and his ships, she agrees to help him once more. He tempts her to believe there might be more to life than she’s dared to hope.

Marcus soon realizes Tessa is anything but a simple seamstress. His angel shows him he’s not as dead inside as he believed. Can the passion they find in each other’s arms unite these lonely souls or will the plot they uncover threaten not only their new-found love but their lives?

Loved this novella from one of my favorite historical romance ...
By mountainreader
Loved this novella from one of my favorite historical romance authors. I loved how Marcus and Tessa met - with her saving him and the nod to the de Wolfe legend. I'm new to this Kindle World but will definitely check out more of the authors involved. Although a shorter novella length, the story had everything I love in historical romance - a richly drawn setting, intrigue, a spunky heroine and a strong hero. Great chemistry between Marcus and Tessa. Look forward to exploring more of the de Wolfe stories and the start of this new series from Williams.

Trusting The Wolfe.
By petula winmill
This is part of the "World of de Wolfe Pack". These are all inspired by Kathryn Le Veque's character William de Wolfe. This one in set in Victorian times with one of his descendants.

Marcus de Wolfe has ventured down to London for two purposes. One to find out why his business and ships are losing money. The other to fulfill his duty to his heritage and find a bride. Since the death of his first wife and childhood sweetheart, he can't risk his heart again.
Tessa Maycroft is rushing back to her dressmaker shop when she comes across a badly wounded man. He must be out of his mind with blood loss, because he says the strangest things.
Tessa and her aunt have worked hard to make a living, and employ apprentices in the shop to give the girls a way to keep of the streets. If Aunt Betty had not stepped in when Tessa needed her, it could easily been her fate.

This is a beautiful love story with few surprises, but lots of depth. It fits in with the series very well. Our hero, while he may not be as over powering as his ancestor, is fitting for his times. A time when people are just beginning to worry about the poor and downtrodden in the big city. Our heroine fits nicely with this family. She is strong, independent, caring and will not put up with a man who will not see her worth.

I loved it. Now I must find more from this author.

de Wolfe, the hero to trust...and fall for!
By NQT
From the very first chapter, I knew I would love Trusting the Wolfe. Love the title too!

At first we meet brave de Wolfe and realize he’s going to die if he doesn’t get help. And who should help him but an angel, Tessa Maycroft. She’s a seamstress who just happens by the stabbed-and-left-for-dead Marcus de Wolfe. Their meeting is…wow!…so romantic.

They find each other again, after Marcus has healed, and fate will not leave them alone until they get to know each other better and their passion for each other grows. And through it all they have to solve a mystery they are both intertwined with! See, I told you about the fate thing. :)

I loved de Wolfe. He’s definitely a hero to trust!!!

“My parents want me to get married.”
As the sole heir to his family’s fortune, Jake needs to find a wife. A suitable one of course, and his father has provided a list. All he has to do is choose – after all, any of the prospective brides would jump at the chance to snag the eligible bachelor, he’s wealthy and comes from the right kind of family.

So why is he finding it so hard? He shouldn’t care – after all, it’s just a society marriage. Right?

“How soon?”
Shy songwriter Nial is reeling over the news. Jake has been his best friend since forever, and his roommate for years. The fact that he’s secretly in love with the man doesn’t help either. Now his life is being ripped to shreds, not to mention his heart.

“I want to have one last crazy weekend.”
When Jake suggests a pre-bachelor party in Las Vegas, can Nial make it through the trip without breaking? But when Jake insists on being Nial’s “wingman” on the search for hot, available guys…can Nial finally let go and succumb to the moment?

Last Chance in Vegas is a steamy, stand-alone MM romance novella of 22000 words with no cheating, a HEA ending, and no cliffhanger.

Five stars, another one-click author for me now!
By Laurel H.
Straight-to-gay stories always get me, especially when they’re done well. And this one most definitely was. From the beginning of this well-written short story, we see how much the ostensibly straight Jake cares for his best friend, Nial. The love - even if it’s not yet acknowledged as romantic love - is already there. The few women we see in Jake’s life (pushed on him by the heavy-handed set of expectations he grew up with) are clearly not doing it for him. I LOVED the scene in Vegas where he tries to set Nial up with another man, and it finally clicks for him. HE wants Nial. I especially liked how the author handled that transition; making us see what a bond they already had, how Jake couldn’t stand to see Nial with another man when push came to shove, and how it challenged his own self-definition of straight. But at the end, when he had to make a choice, damn, did he ever come through. Beautifully written, excellent character/relationship journey handled in such a short length, and a truly, truly sweet HEA. Oh… and the sex. Smokin’ hot sexy times, too! FIVE STARS and definitely an author I’ll be one-clicking from here on!

Might have been better if it was longer
By Lora905
OK, sure it was a cliché theme, but there's hundreds, probably thousands of MM books with this same basic premise. What makes the difference is the writing. This story was just okay. There was too much missing information. There is no character development, so we know nothing of the 2 MCs except that they've been friends for many years and that Nial has been living with Jake since his parents put him out. How old were they exactly, being that Jake picked up Nial in his sports car and brought him to live in his apartment? Jake said that he paid for that apartment out of his own money. So were they already adults when Nial was kicked out? If so, why was Nial living at home if he wasn't in school? What exactly did Jake do? (Nial didn't even know, which is strange when you're supposed to be in love with someone, let alone your best friend.) Was songwriting the only thing Nial did all day besides sitting around the house? Jake says that his parents want him to get married, but there is never any mention of or interaction with his mother, only his father. Did she feel the same way as Jake's father? The epilogue 2 years later was kind of nice, but the one thing that was left out (that I was curious about), was what happened to Jake's father. Was he still around by the time of the epilogue? Was he telling the truth or was he simply trying to scare Jake into doing his bidding? There were just too many questions still unanswered, IMO.

On top of all that, it didn't really feel as though Jake loved Nial the same way Nial loved him. It seemed like with the thought of marrying someone he barely knew, let alone loved, then Nial talking about moving out, then someone else showing interest in Nial, all of this just combined to make Jake desperate to lose the one constant in his life. He didn't seem to have any real friends and his family didn't act like family. When they first had sex it seemed more like a last ditch effort to hold on to Nial. It seemed like that later on, too.

My heart was breaking for Nial - he loved Jake for a long time
By Mrs Readsalot
These two best friends are roommates; Nial is a songwriter and Jake works for his father's business empire. When Jake's father decides it's time for Jake to provide him an heir, Jake takes Nial and some friends to Vegas for one last fling.

Nial's heart is breaking as he watches Jake 'audition' the women on the 'approved' list his father gave him. He could go. He should go. But he stays; sort of like not being able to turn away from a wreck when you see one. Nial watches it unfold.

Jake realizes that he can't marry any of the women on this list because he doesn't love them. He states he doesn't even like most of them. Will he be able to come to grips with what he actually feels in his heart for Nial?

Short story. Sweet friendship. HEA.

Life isn't all hahahheehee
By doffy
I did enjoy the insight into normal relationships which can and do cause laughter, pain and suffering. although the family is of Indian origin it has all the traditions associated with that country, even though the central figures were born in the EAST End of London. The writing is so good you almost hear all the accents and nuances and the humor aimed against the rellies is wonderful, and could be part of any family regardless of ethnicity. There is pain and sorrow as there is in real life, and I felt it all. Loved it. Dorothy Maley

A Good Read!
By A Customer
This is one of the few books that actually keeps the reader interested from beginning to end. The main characters - Tania, Sunita, Chila, and their husbands, boyfriends and family members - are very insightful and well written. The scenes in the book are so vividly described in a way I can actually see the narrative happening in my mind. I also like how the author uses originality and suspense to keep the story line going. This is a trait that is so hard to find in many novels these days. The surprises were so shocking, I couldn't put down the book for no long amount of time, fearing that I would miss something! I read this 332-page book in two days, which is record time for me. I also liked this book because the author talks about issues that Indian women don't discuss outside of their communities, such as sexuality, interracial dating, marriage, careers, friendship, family and cultural norms. Though I am not Indian myself, I was able to relate to some of the dilemmas the author brings up. This is a great book to read if one is interested in learning more about Indian culture in the United Kingdom. I loved her last book, Anita and Me, and I look forward to reading publications from her in the future!

Indian Women and thier relationships with men...good book!!
By Jules
Ms. Meera Syal is one of those authors who keeps you interested without snoozing once!!! She is also a comedienne and takes part in a radio show called "Goodness Gracious Me." I am not sure if this show is still on the air...but I listened to a few tapes and it is genuinely hilarious!!
This book journeys into the lives of three friends and their relationships with men. It introduces(unlike other similar books)sexuality, infidelity, inter-racial relationships, and other important issues that need to be addressed this day in age! The stories are set in Britain, so it is a great viewpoint on how Indians live there and what they deal with on a day to day basis.
This book also explores the close-knit relationships of all the characters who are bound together by their friendship/trust at first, but then things start to fall apart as infidelity comes into play... a must read book for anyone yearning to dig deep inside the intricate facades of the Indian Culture!! =)

Made-to-Order Lean: Excelling in a High-Mix, Low-Volume Environment, by Greg Lane

Low Volume Manufacturing often appears contrary to 'Lean' Methodologies, though if you look at the Toyota Production System (which had some of its roots in a Job Shop, but instead became famous for the remarkable results in high-volume manufacturing plants), one must return to the principals (not the high publicized tools) to better understand its correct application in high-mix, low-volume environments. Made to Order Lean is based on years of successfully adapting lean methodologies into Job Shops. This book is specifically geared for manufacturers that have hundreds to thousands of active part numbers with few or no ongoing forecasted volumes, and for job shops that build only to order. The primary focus is eliminating non-value-added activities and instituting improvements on the most repetitive jobs, a strategy that gives you more time to produce your low-volume work or one-offs.The book focuses on operational process improvement, but also dedicates 3 chapters to improving indirect (transactional) processes, which are a more intricate portion in these organizations and account for significant cost & lead time in high mix environments.

Low Volume MFG
By Robert A. Drensek
This book could have been better for me, but overall I liked it and found it useful. I work for a low volume Hi-mix company coming from a a hi-mix, hi-volume background. I found the traditional approaches were not going to work. Groping in the dark and some trial and error, I was coming to myown conclusions, when I found this book.

It is not a complete compendium of all lean tools. It refers you out to Duggan's Book (Mixed Models) and others for deeper dives into particular tools.

What is does do is give you a frame work to apply known tools to the low-volume problem. Traditional pull is ineffective if you make once or once or twice a year. Pull is still good, but the application of the tool is different because the circumstance is different.

The big learning out of this for traditional lean guys is; the tools still work, how and when to apply them changes. The skill in the practioner is learning the new how and when.

Quick overview in lo-volume: Traditional product families will be harder. Value stream maps are less important. Employee contribution and understand are much more critical. Focus on flow through the system. Focus on visual management of the team/cell, train the managers how to manage in that environment. Pull what you can pull... flow the rest. Mix kanban and MRP. Mix pull and push/flow. Focus on what works.

I would have liked a more definitive answer, but as the author wrote, the different circumstances of company's varies so much at this end of the spectrum, what is right for the 4 a day guy may not be for the 4 a month or 4 a year. Principles hold.... tools and applciations change.

Very good book on lean for manufacturers with high mix and low volume
By Amazon Customer
This book has a lot of great ideas and examples (photos of boards for manufacturing). I love the "Managing Visually" chapter with all the examples. There are a lot of good nuggets throughout the book and I've used it as a reference in many situations. I keep finding more helpful info every time I pick up the book. Highly recommended.

A must have for high-mix low-volume manufacturers
By Improvement Fanatic
This is a true "how to" book for implementing Lean concepts into Low-Volume High-Mix manufacturing. The author assumes the reader has some prior experience with the traditional lean concepts, so the emphasis is on how to apply those concepts to the low-volume high-mix environment without re-explaining the why or what, but rather just the how.

A few of the concepts I found to be the most "enlightening" were: how to get the biggest impact from visual controls; the combination kanban, work order, & FIFO boards; pushing at the first operation and flowing through the rest; handling shared resources; using work diaries to aid in office kaizen; using FIFO boards in office processes; and making improvements in the shop & office when you have excess capacity.

The book is stuffed with examples using pictures, charts, & drawings that make the concepts even easier to understand and apply. Many of the concepts include some commentary on the order to implement them in to achieve the greatest chances of success. The author does refer to several other books for more detailed information on a few topics. These include: A Revolution in Manufacturing: the SMED System by Shigeo Shingo, Creating Mixed Model Value Streams by Kevin J Duggan, Learning to See by Rother & Shook, and Integrating Kanban with MRP II by Raymond Lewis.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–10—Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learned to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies from below. A new boy arrives every 30 days. The original group has been in "the glade" for two years, trying to find a way to escape through a maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun to give up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change. There are some great, fast-paced action scenes, particularly those involving the nightmarish Grievers who plague the boys. Thomas is a likable protagonist who uses the information available to him and his relationships (including his ties to the girl, Teresa) to lead the Gladers. Unfortunately, the question of whether the teens will escape the maze is answered 30 pages before the book ends, and the intervening chapter loses momentum. The epilogue, which would be deliciously creepy coming immediately after the plot resolves, fails to pack a punch as a result. That said, The Maze Runner has a great hook, and fans of dystopian literature, particularly older fans of Jeanne DuPrau's The City of Ember (Random, 2003), will likely enjoy this title and ask for the inevitable sequel.—Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH END

Decent Read Though Not Very Thought Provoking
By Jarucia Jaycox
I first heard about this book at an SCWBWI conference where its editor from Delacorte spoke highly of how it grabbed her attention right away.

I have to agree. The one thing that Dashner does right from start to finish is barely provide enough information to answer the questions that form in the reader's mind BUT what information he gives does promote one to keep reading.

Curiosity drove me to read this book straight through...that and the fact that the writing wasn't all that challenging.

I'm not trying to bag on Dashner, but I was a little surprised at the many passed-on opportunities he had to draw me further into the story or even care more about the characters' fates .

I felt consistently disappointed with what I was offered of Thomas's character -- far too sulky and desirous of screaming at people who can hardly offer him the answers, etc. he's so desperate for. And Teresa, for as important as she's made out to be, is so flat. I think it was well within the author's scope to improve the depth of these characters considering the decent job he did on secondary characters like Chuck and Minho.

By the time I reached the end, I all but rolled my eyes. I felt roughly the same as I did when I finished watching 'The Cube'...interesting story, but what was the point of putting the characters through all that? Especially when the characters themselves hardly spend any real time trying to understand their situation. And this latter part actually seems quite critical to the purpose of the situation they're in.

Okay, I know this is meant to be YA but it certainly had room to grow in the 'thought provoking' department. It's a decent and entertaining story, but will it become the topic of critical academic discussion? Not likely.

It's far too light in depth and development as it stands. Perhaps the eventual trilogy as a whole will provide something 'more'.

Maze Runner made a lot of generic mistakes and on-the-fly plot twists that resulted in a confusing, dull story with no answers.

The story itself was interesting enough for the most part, but the pace was painfully slow and Dashner committed a few things you are not supposed to do in fictional writing, ever. I'm talking newbie mistakes here.

The second largest thing that Dashner violated was the Show, Don't Tell rule. He almost assuredly does not understand this, as a lot of his descriptions are flatly told instead of explained. "Thomas felt sad." "Thomas snapped." Dashner does not do a good job showing us his world or his characters, instead just telling us how things are. This interweaves with my next points a bit and is explained in greater detail later.

For my second point, marking the biggest mistake Dashner did with this story, he began the book with the White Room Syndrome. Much like the Show, Don't Tell rule, this is one thing that almost all writers know very deeply - do not start your story off with the white room syndrome.

The white room syndrome is where your character suddenly wakes up in a completely unfamiliar setting and knows nothing about anything - his past, his name, people he knew, etc... This is cheap because it allows you to dodge any sort of actual development in the world, its characters or the relationships that the characters have. This book in particular suffered a lot because Dashner decided to go this way.

One particular area it suffered deeply was with character development. Partially since he had no past to develop from, Thomas was a weak protagonist with nearly no original or interesting characteristics. He seems brave at times, but everybody in this book is. He seems smart at times, but so is everybody else. To me, he is almost a blank slate designed to move the story forward. I cannot list one original characteristic about him - other characters say he is interesting, but that is not the conclusion I came to - if the story didn't follow him, he would blend in with the rest of the characters.

The other characters were also an issue. Other than Minho and Chuck, I had a hard time picturing any of them or even telling them apart. Alby was the typical reckless group leader. Newt was the typical nicer more rational second-in-command. Teresa was a typical plain-Jane female side character designed to make the plot actually go somewhere. Minho was interesting, but Dashner could have developed him further than he did. And Chuck was a potentially interesting character, but Dashner killed him off for no reason.

It would have been very difficult to develop any of these characters to a great extent, though, since none of them have histories or memories outside of the maze. Because they all have heavy amnesia, they don't even remember who they are - thus, they cannot be deeply developed. They are just a bunch of people trying to get out. I have to wonder if Dashner himself had fleshed his characters out any deeper than this by this point of the story.

Another way the whole `no past' thing effects the plot is the relationship between Teresa and Tom. It was possibly one of the weakest romances I have ever read in a novel. They loved each other because they did `before it happened', not because they have actual chemistry. There was no development or movement in their relationship whatsoever - it just started off that they were in love just because they were, and that's where the book left off as well. They loved each other because it's what Dashner wanted for the story, not because it made sense for the characters.

Let's put this in contrast to the last book series I read - Divergent. In the first Divergent book, it takes almost 250 pages to fully develop the relationship between Tris and Tobias. Tobias starts off as her superior, and slowly their relationship develops and morphs into something tangible, which is why you were truly able to feel it in that series. It logically progressed into a relationship where you could really believe they had feelings for each other. In Maze Runner, the only reason I felt they loved each other was because I was told to think that. I had no real reason to assume they had feelings for each other besides that, since there was no chemistry, development, getting to know each other or even any conversations that didn't have directly to do with the plot. It was utterly emotionless and monotone and had no effect on me whatsoever - that is not how romance is supposed to be! That's not even how a mundane friendship is supposed to be! What he had with Chuck had more feeling than what he had with Teresa.

---

Then there were several gaping plot holes. One that I was particularly annoyed with was how long it took them to figure out that the Griever Hole was the only way out. I mean, seriously... I figured that out the second they introduced it and tossed the rock in. I twas utterly predictable. Just think. They have been running around this big maze for two years and have not found any exit of any sort, but in this one spot there appears to be a hole you can toss thing into to make them disappear. It took them an extra 200 pages to figure out that that was, just maybe, an exit of sorts.

Then, it surprised me to notice that Minho has noticed all of those WORLD IN CATASTROPHE: KILLZONE EXPERIMENT DEPARTMENT things all over the walls and never came to the conclusion that this was, oh, I don't know, some sort of experiment or something. It didn't even occur to the characters until the end of the book when Thomas brought it up that this might, just maybe be some sort of experiment.

Minho was a pretty intelligent character, and so was Newt and Alby. In fact, it was a main plot point at the end that they are all technically very intelligent people. If this is the case, how did they not figure all of this stuff out a very long time ago? (Getting back to the Telling issue, the only reason I had to believe they were smart was because I was told so. I was never shown them being particularly smart, especially considering the things I mentioned above.)

Then there is the scene where the sky disappears. I have several issues with this scene. First, why was the first conclusion Thomas came to that the sky was artificial? I was figuring that something covered up the sky at first, but the very first thing he figured was that it absolutely must be that the sky is fake, with no chance of another option whatsoever. There was no guesswork or figuring out to be done here - he just knew, just because he knew.

And at that, where did this even come from? To me, it seems like Dashner literally came up with that on the spot. There was absolutely nothing in this book beforehand to hint that the sky was fake - nothing. If Thomas had thought to himself that this or that looks or seem fabricated or a bit off, it would have made some sense why he came to the conclusion he did so ridiculously quickly when the sky disappeared. But there was nothing. It just happened. Something like this should have been foreshadowed.

This is something I feel he does a lot - or, forgets to do a lot. He does not develop a lot of things beforehand that eventually become important, nor does he give clarification afterwards. For an example, the telepathic talking that Teresa and Tom have. To me, this was clearly used so Teresa could move the story forward no matter where Tom was at the time being, but I would have been okay with that if there was another relevant and in-story reason why she could talk to him like that. Sure, he might answer that in the next book, but he should have answers that in this book, since it was a vital part of this story. As far as I am concerned, since he gave no good reason why that is the way it is, I am convinced the only reason why it is there is for a cheap and easy way to move the plot forward. If there is another relevant in-story reason why it exists, he probably could have come up with it in the second book.

That all might not be true, but if he either developed it beforehand or clarified it afterwards, there would be no confusion. By the end of this story, I am convinced it existed for no other reason than to easily move the story forward when it needed to, just like the sky suddenly disappearing. It felt like a random event he came up with on the spot so he could get un-stuck in his story.

---

Then, at the end, there is almost no resolution to the story whatsoever. They meet a woman who explains to them that this all happened for some sort of good reason (which I logically assumed), but then proceeded to say that that was certainly enough for them to understand and they should just accept it. She could have elaborated on just a bit more to explain a little bit of the context this story takes place in, but does not in any way mostly because she didn't feel they would want to know, or something. It seems to confuse her why making 40 people go through a maze for 2 years for less than 20 of them to survive with no context whatsoever might confused them or make then want answers of some sort.

Then a bunch of people come in and kill her, take the main characters to a safe place (while of course explaining nothing about anything, because there's no time to explain) and the book ends. Well, sort of, anyway. The bus driver rushing them to safety explains something about sun flares and a sickness that has ravaged the world and how the maze was all some sort of mental test, but it all seemed non sequitur to the rest of the story. This, again, reflects back to the issue he has with foreshadowing. There was absolutely nothing in this book to hint towards any of this, and it all comes across as being random and on-the-spot. I was unable to correlate anything that happened throughout the book to anything relevant to the sun flares.

There were very few answers to anything. Why could Tom and Teresa talk telepathically? What were the Grievers and why were they there? What was the test supposed to do, anyway? How was anything of the story relevant to the last few chapters at all?

Those are the sort of things I should not have had to wait for book 2 to have answered, since they were all relevant to this story. Sure, you need to leave some questions for the next book, but the way that he answered absolutely none of them leaves me to assume he might not have had it all figured out by this point. One could argue that Dashner was clever not to reveal anything, but that is just not the case since he did that at the expense of this story not having an actual conclusion. Because of this laziness to answer anything at all, I simply have no desire to find out what happens next. I don't care what he comes up with, since he has not shown me that even he knew where he was going with the story by that point. I'm finding it hard to believe he actually had a big grand plan to reveal to us by this point.

Take into consideration how the first Hunger Games ends. (Hunger Games 1 spoilers for those who have not read the book or seen the movie by this point. Skip this paragraph if so.) Katniss and Peeta make the government angry by making a joke out of them at the end of the Games, so at the end of book 1, we have to wait and see how they will politically fight against the government and how they can pretend to be in love when they're not. There was something truly tangible to look forward to in the sequel, and that is what drove me to pick up the next book. This was all done while making the first book a complete story with some resolution. That is how a book 1 is supposed to be done.

Now let's go back to the ending of Maze Runner. They escape the maze to learn that it existed for some sort of reason, and the book ends with the promise that you will learn what that reason was later. There is no resolution to any questions raised in the story, there is no other major hook to make you read the next book - there is just no real reason to continue. The one and only hook that the end of this book had was that you will learn what the first book was about in the second book. That's it. Instead of building up new scenarios and conflicts to transfer over, his only hook is that he withheld vital information that should have been at the end of this book that he will give in the second one. In comparison to the Hunger Games, it's quite pathetic and lazy.

I am not entirely certain how people can compare this book to the Hunger Games or Divergent. It's just not on the same level of storytelling in any area. The writing is full of telling, the story is riddled with plot holes and plot devices, the character development is lacking, the romance and relationships are boring and there is no real conclusion to the story. I am not certain why people put this book up there with some of the other major titles right now.

An author more lost than his characters? (Spoiler Alert)
By Bookgirl
After completing the Hunger Games trilogy, I was eager for another great YA dystopian read but did not find it in The Maze Runner. I was initially intrigued by the book's description. I knew there would be boys caught in a maze, with their memories wiped and little hope for escape, and I knew that the appearance of a girl on the scene would change everything. Mazes, games, riddles, and other sorts of non-traditional mysteries attract me, but Dashner's execution of his book did not.

The plot was ill-paced. At times it felt slow, because Dashner introduced the reader to the maze in the same way the main character, Thomas, was introduced to it: both the reader and Thomas learn almost everything through numerous secondary explanations by characters. In more skilled hands, this might be an effective way of immersing a reader in a fictional world. Dashner's exposition, however, felt cumbersome. As a reader, if I'm going to be told about a world rather than shown it, I'd better be told well. When I wasn't slogging through Dashner's writing, I was tumbling head-over-heels down its textual cliffs. Parts of the novel simply moved too quickly for any real character or plot development to occur. Readers are barely introduced to the main protagonist before being introduced to Teresa, the girl who supposedly changes everything. We really have very little sense for what's changing, because this inciting action comes so shortly after our encounter with Thomas.

The plot also felt as if it had been constructed with little forethought. Each step or twist in the plot seemed as if it were generated on the spot as the author wrote his way linearly through this novel. Shazam! Such and such happens out of the blue. A quick patch-up of missing explanation ensues. Shazam! The next twist happens, followed by some explanation. And so on, until one of the biggest Shazams!: The crew exits the maze and suddenly, for no apparent reason, one of their members is killed. Subtle build-up of suspense and intricately interwoven plots do not exist in this novel. It's almost entirely composed of sudden action followed by explanatory reaction.

All this might not matter so much, if I'd felt in any way connected to the characters. But I didn't. Most of the boys meshed together in my brain, particularly since so many of them end up acting "out of character" anyway. As for Teresa and Thomas, readers know little about their back-story (until the peritextual "Exclusive Wicked Correspondence" at the end), and I didn't find their characters all that complex, deep, relatable, or quirky (aside from their obvious telepathic skill). Character "complexity" in this novel was little more than character "unpredictability."

In short, I was disappointed. The reason I gave the book 2 stars instead of 1, though, is because I did at least finish it. I've no intention of reading the sequel, however.
