Entry Level User Experience Book

UX Design: Foundations for Designing Online User Experiences is a good introductory book for anyone new to User Experience design and also new to projects or working with clients. More than one-half of the book is about the process of user design. For example, one chapter walks through reserving a conference room, having the proper equipment, planning an agenda---the type of tasks that a management trainee or junior project manager should already know.

UX Design: Foundations would be a helpful book for someone in a new or junior role that is unfamiliar with user experience design and wants to learn to help them as a team member in a small project. It will also be a helpful book for experienced project managers who have a user experience work stream as part of their project, and just want a general sense of the field.

As UX Design: Foundations focuses primarily on commerce sites, it is not as helpful for intranet, applications, or even complex sites. There are some elements that are important across all types of sites, such as information architecture, home page hints, etc., but again, all of these are at a high level.

UX Design: Foundations for Designing Online User Experiences is a fast, easy read, and it's true to it's title in that it provides foundational information for readers to get a very high level perspective of user experience design and the process of working with clients and site users.

Should be titled Project Management of UX Designs

Should be titled "Project Management of UX Designs for Very Large Websites", instead of "UX Design". 2/3 of the book consists of excellent details on web UX project management; 1/3 is webpages' UX recommendations, mostly on retail websites. For example, book writes more about workshop procedures to gather UX specifications than about webpages' UX specifications.

Authors are premiere UX consultants in Great Britain, hired by sizable companies, frequently retailers. They write from such perspective, dealing with websites with budgets covering several specialists including visual designer, developer, marketer, product managers, campaign managers, etc. Excellent tips on how to involve committees and consensus-building during web UX design. Not for smaller websites.

The book has weaknesses. 1. User design, I believe, should be tied into search engine and web marketing, and this approach doesn't. 2. The book is interested in profitability and returns on investments, but I feel it should have stronger emphasis. 3. Tie into social media in design is absent.

Incorrect title and profitability weaknesses--4 star.

Who would particularly benefit from this book?

1. Buyers of UX services would learn what UX people do.
2. A trainee for UX would learn a lot!
3. A web designer without a UX department who suddenly lands a large project.

Scratches the surface but no deep dives

I love Smashing Magazine's website and use it for inspiration or to research something pretty frequently. I was excited to see what their book on UX would be like. I'm a little disappointed that it's more of a shallow overview and nothing really substantial. I think it's geared towards folks that are just starting out, to talk about the process. It's a bit dry and short of illustrations or examples. I don't have other UX books to compare it to but I have a feeling that there are better resources available. I'm mildly irritated by the super short chapters and lots of red header text that I find distracting. I'm sure there's some good information in here but I don't feel like sifting through the book to find it.

The best, even not complete.

An excellent reference book. It goes deep in sealing: seals, gaskets, materials, dynamic and static, theoretical and practical approach. Unfortunately, it lacks a better coverage on metal seals and gaskets. However, no book even scratches this issue. Other books are no better than catalogues.

I agree with the previous review... this text is an excellent source of information regarding mechanical face seals. It is detailed enough to satisfy your curiosity regarding some of the details, yet it is written in a manner that has proven easy to read.
I have found it very useful to read this book, then search for and read the technical papers Mr. Lebeck has written since 1991.

Principals and Design of Mechanical Face Seals

The book provides an excellent look at some of the more technical aspects of mechanical seal design. It is a very good reference for any rotating equipment engineer. While it has some very intricate details, it does provide a lot of real word applicable knowledge.

About the Author

Holly A. Duckworth is a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt with over 30 years of experience in manufacturing. Holly leads organizations on the pursuit for process improvement. She has over 2000 hours as a classroom instructor. She is a volunteer leader for the American Society for Quality and their Social Responsibility Organization. Holly has coauthored two other books: My Six Sigma Workbook (Paton Professional Publishing) and Social Responsibility: Failure Mode Effects and Analysis (CRC Press).

Andrea Hoffmeier is a Six Sigma Black Belt with over 25 years’ experience in marketing, product development, quality management, and organizational excellence. She has worked with organizations including Bellevue University, Callaway Golf, Convergys, Disney, First Data, Home Depot, Nordstrom, PS Brands, Ralph Lauren, Sunbeam, SunTrust Bank, UMUC, US Treasury, Verizon, Walmart and Xerox. She has trained and presented extensively on the topic of Social Responsibility, including articles in the American Society for Quality magazine and Wiley Journal. Andrea is completing her Master’s degree in Sustainability and Environmental Management at Harvard.

The ‘evilution’ of Charles Addams's singularly eccentric family began long before the television and film interpretations made them icons of American popular culture. Addams first created Morticia, Lurch, and The Thing in a cartoon published in a 1938 issue of the New Yorker—though he hadn't named them at the time, or even conceived of a family unit. (When he did name the deadly matriarch, he was inspired by the Yellow Pages listing for ‘Morticians.’) Other characters were born and developed in a multitude of Addams's cartoons over the next twenty-six years, before the cheerfully creepy clan debuted on ABC television in 1964 and later on the big screen, twice, in 1991 and 1993.

The Addams Family: An Evilution is the first book to trace The Addams Family history, presenting more than 200 cartoons created by Charles Addams (American, 1912-1988) throughout his prolific career; many have never been published before. A fine study

This volume looks at Morticia, Gomez, Uncle Fester, Lurch and the rest of the recurring characters that Charles Addams used in his single-panel cartoons primarily appearing in the New Yorker. This book gives us some idea of the artist's character development and thoughts about this rogues gallery and the book includes some previously unpublished material. Although much of this material was previously published in Addams' collections it is still worth it to me, as someone who admires his work, to have this all in one place along with previously unseen material.

Sophisticated view of the dark side

Chuck Addams, as he was known to friends, shares with us his joy in the wierdness present in daily life. His cartoons aren't violent, just pregnant with ideas that nudge along your own imagination. PoIsed to greet Christmas carollers by pouring boiling oil from the manse's roof, one cartoon prompts a chuckle from it's perverse perspective alone. You aren't drawn to ponder the ugly effect of an actual cascade of boiling oil on the people below. I like this innocennce in Addams' work. His characters are twisted, yet credible exaggerations of somewhat 'normal' wife, father, kids, and family monster in the attic. Many cartoons tease you, appearing straightforward until close examination finds the funny small detail that makes the whole scene a kick.
Among my favorites are the boy's report card detailing his teacher's warning that his anti-social behavior seems deliberately devious and malicious, prompting Morticia to proudly pat him on the head. Another shows the arrival of two animal carrier cages at the mansion, with Morticia exclaiming, "The children are back from camp, dear."
This book appreciates Addams's work, and made me laugh and think. That is a home run.

Better than expected

I didn't realize that this book was hardcover - my fault for not reading the details of the description. I was pleasantly surprised when it was! This book is made very well and has a premium feel. The pages are semi-gloss, thick stock. Nice.

All of the Addams family drawings are here, including rough sketches that were never released. Each character has a bio, written by Charles. It's all very informative and gives great insight on the characters.

The only thing I don't like about the book, and it's nit-picky, I know: the font they chose for the captions of the drawings, headers and the book title is ridiculously ugly. It cheapens the feel of the book and, especially on the drawings, is difficult to read. Something simpler would have been pleasing and easier on the eyes. It reminds me of those weird fonts that you'd see on a flyer for a Halloween party - a bit tacky.

I bought my book new though the "other sellers" option in Amazon (from a local shop in NY listed under the amazon seller name bookcultureny) and their price, brand new, was half the price as normal Amazon. The book arrived before I even had time to think about where it was and the process was painless. Awesome!
