Exhaustive look at every single inflectional ending in Slavic, taking into account recent progress, and with a twist

Within the field of comparative Indo-European linguistics, there have been several works over the decades that aimed to reconstruct the ancestors of the distinctive inflectional endings found in Old Church Slavonic and other early Slavic languages. The last two decades have seen quite a bit of progress made in Balto-Slavic reconstruction, and in this work Thomas Olander looks at the Slavic inflectional material afresh, drawing on recent insights.

Olander's book has a very different approach than his forebears, however. Instead of describing the inflections of Old Church Slavonic or a vaguely defined first-millennium "Common Slavonic", he chooses to work with a rigorously reconstructed Proto-Slavic. Olander describes Proto-Slavic as the most recent ancestor of all the Slavic languages before the first innovation that is not equally shared by all members of the family. That first non-universal innovation is the fronting of non-front vowels after palatal consonants -- due to the relative chronologies involved, even "typically Slavic" things like the first palatalization of the velars and the yers must be dated to after Proto-Slavic proper. The reconstructed forms we find in this book therefore look very different than the "Common Slavic" forms we're used to (often hardly different than mere transliterations from OCS manuscripts in Cyrillic or Glagolitic), but Olander generally follows his Proto-Slavic forms with the conventional CS ones so readers aren't too daunted.

After a substantial introduction that surveys much of the recent work in comparative Indo-European linguistics in general and Balto-Slavic reconstruction specifically, the meat of the book is a historical-comparative examination of every single inflectional ending that can be reconstructed from Proto-Slavic, that is, every noun case and verb person, number and tense ending in verb conjugation. For each, he examines the material both from a general Indo-European perspective (what ending must be reconstructed for PIE on the basis of all the daughter languages?) and a Slavic perspective (what ending must be reconstructed for Proto-Slavic on the basis of the modern languages?).

As a longtime enthusiast in Indo-European linguistics, I greatly enjoyed this book. Olander offers all kinds of new insights that help explain some of the more puzzling aspects of Slavic inflection. For example, he reconstructs a schwa for Proto-Slavic (high vowels in final closed syllables reduce) before the front and back yers we know for Common Slavonic, which offers a convincing path for how Indo-European masc. nom. sg. -os become Slavic -u, and which accounts for some of the unusual features found in Old Novgorod and early Slavic loans into Finnic.

Beautiful, honest, naked, inspiring.

I don't usually read auto-biographies, downloaded Shoe Dog on a whim and could not put it down until I reached the very last page. The final chapter materialized through a curtain of tears.

Knight's story is intriguing, his words so straight and bare that I feel I've made a new friend.

Read this if you are an entrepreneur (or married to one), an athlete, an adventurer, or simply a human. This is not the story of a company, but of the souls and persons, great adventures and struggles behind the brand.

I love this book

I love this book. I read an advance copy a few months ago and was really taken with the charm, humor and wisdom of the narrative voice. I'm sure a lot of people will buy this book hoping for a how-to guide on founding a bold, innovative corporation. Those people won't be disappointed, for there's lots here on the topic of creative thinking, risk taking and dream chasing. But for me, the book was a beautiful reflection on youth, vision, caprice, doggedness, good cheer and a profound competitive spirit. Knight is a natural storyteller, and he looks back on his early days as an entrepreneur with clarity, wonder and humor. I laughed on nearly every page, but the portrait that emerges is one of a young man with little but a dream to anchor him, a mentor to guide him and an unshakable belief that he can actually make it all work. Most important, it's love that gives the entire enterprise purpose. That's inspiring.

TRULY A "FIVE-STAR" READ

Well written, historically-accurate biographies are among my favorite genres ... and I expect many others as well. While I didn't know Phil Knight's name or recognize his many achievements prior to reading the publisher's profile of this book before ordering it for my personal e-reader, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the outstanding job of publishing and interesting story behind this modern "Horatio Alger" success story; in addition to being a fascinating "behind-the-scene" accounting of "Nike's" remarkable climb to excellence. Knight is clearly an interesting, funny, brilliant individual ... the proof of which becomes abundantly clear throughout this excellent book.

A new spiritual teaching for the 21st century

I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in living a deeply meaningful and purposeful life at the start of the 21st century. Evolutionary Enlightenment, as Andrew Cohen has explained in his new book, is an original, contemporary spiritual teaching having its roots in traditional enlightenment but then going further to contextualize nonduality in an evolutionary context. It points to how we can consciously create a new culture between us based on continuously striving to bring into being higher levels of consciousness.

This book is not just about theory. Cohen outlines his Five Tenets for living an evolutionary enlightened life, and having been engaged in practicing Evolutionary Enlightenment for some 10 years, I find these Tenets ever fresh and new, and a constant source of further contemplation.

Andrew Cohen writes in the book, "The teaching is about catalyzing the miracle of emergence in the interior of the cosmos, in and through our own selves." What is significant about this is that it sets the biggest possible context for our human lives and puts the responsibility for change and creating the future directly in our own hands. Cohen outlines the awe-inspiring power of the evolutionary impulse when it manifests as the spiritual impulse in human beings. This is what Andrew Cohen is bringing to the world - this new and totally relevant interpretation of who we are, and why we are here. It confirms our potential for never ending creativity and integrity. The book is inspiring, easy to read, and totally engaging. It definitely has a transmission coming directly from Cohen. I just want to read it again!

Starts off well, but ends in a big crash.

Luckily I borrowed this book and didn't have to hand over hard earned cash for erroneous teachings, or interesting mind-food at best.

The book starts off great with a summary non-duality, and the traditional take on enlightenment, pure consciousness, and the philosophy of nothing every having happened in the universe, apart from the dream of our own false self, along with the remedy of transcending the false limited view of "self". There's lots of talk about meditation, stillness, and just Being. Although nothing new here, at least the author summarizes this in his own words, and generally tows the line of most traditional paths.

Things then take a strange spin-off (downward unfortunately), whereby the author assets that there's another perspective on nonduality & enlightenment.. one which traditional paths seemed to have missed in the last 10,000 years, and which involves the perspective of "Becoming".. so wait, it's not only about the Absolute which never changed and which never becomes (ie. Being), and which is found in meditation and stillness.. it's also about an impulse to "Become", and about the evolution of consciousness, and even aligning with the "sex impulse", in fact "Your own spiritual yearning is not separate from the big bang itself." OK.. so we're back onto a personalised self with spiritual yearnings, and this somehow also aligns with the universe.. (nothing new here by the way, for those into New-Age stuff such as the nauseating Law of Attraction literature).

Next stop, some practical information.. and things take an upturn.. the book gets back to meditation, stillness, and just being. But wait, the practical steps in Part III, then go on a side trip back into complete duality, and building up the personal self again with considering "our" intention, volition, choosing faculty, and how this all ties into a sort of universal morality of which the universe is striving towards (according to...??)

Things then go way off track, when the author then steals a few ideas from Theosophy, Darwin, and Gurdjieff type teachings in asserting there is some sort of evolution of culture, higher objective consciousness, and higher "being", to which the universe is striving (and we should help along as well.. by reading books like this), and that we're going to be involved in an exciting future after all (despite negating all of this in the first chapter of the book on absolute being and everything being complete before creation).

In summary, have fun reading, but don't hang out too long for some amazing 21st Century evolution of enlightenment or consciousness.. apart from these sorts of castles in the sky. As they say in Zen, after enlightenment "chop wood, carry water"..

So well worth the wait!

It's been a long time since Andrew Cohen published a book, but this book makes good on that as it is the long-awaited complete summary of his teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment. I knew it was going to be good, but I never expected it to be this accessible, complete, easy to read, and deeply captivating. Cohen takes you by the hand and walks you through time and no-time, all the way from the timeless ground of being and before the Big Bang, through the process of creation, up to this moment when you read this book and feel deeply touched by your own privilege to be alive just now. His language has always changed and morphed over the years, but I think in this book he has found the most direct, moving, profound yet accessible way to bring the evolutionary and enlightened journey across.

Oh, and that doesn't even begin to describe how this book is the "how to" for Ken Wilber's dense writings on Integral Theory, again in profoundly practical, jargon-free language.

While I was reading, I was thinking "I could read this to my mother and she would love it!". At the same time, my own copy is already chewed up, highlighted, and marked on every second page, quoted in my academic writings. I have no doubt this book will be an all-time classic as it brings the most profound teachings in a way that is so 21st-century, relevant, and accessible, that you don't need to "be spiritual" to get it - everyone can get this.

Kindle edition - low resolution graphics

The text of this book appears to be outstanding. Regarding the Kindle edition, however, the diagrams are not sufficiently high enough in definition to justify the price for the Kindle edition. If this were corrected, I would buy the Kindle version and recommend it highly to those who work with analgesics professionally.

So prolific was the artist that his collected oeuvre, all the covers, illustrations (for magazines such as Exotique) and comic books, could now fill several libraries, but one should really stumble upon Stanton by chance. Great visual story telling from an acclaimed master

For those men with a special fondness for Female Superiority, this book is a keeper. It is a generous volume of some of the late Stanton's best artwork with graphic examples of women getting the better of men. Apparently, these items of work were the product of commissions, and it is interesting to ponder how widespread the desire for women to be in control of men is. There is great variation within what could be a limited field: women of colour in charge, women ganging up on single men, women in the mafia, women reassigning the house keeping chores etc. Plenty to keep one titillated. Minor drawbacks are the, at times, typographical errors, and rather hard to follow (text being very compressed) three or so stories at the start of the book. There is one story that is pure graphics with no speech. At first I thought this was deliberate but I gather it is not since the messages from the frames are not clear. But these should not get in the way of the overall enjoyment of this great compendium. All the women are beautifully drawn, quite voluptious and well endowed, and Stanton presses buttons with the mandatory sleek looking high heels supporting shapely calves: Awe inspiring art forms that tower over snivelling looking men, who appear quite insipid and rightly deferential to the REAL Stronger Sex. Great stuff!

Sweet, Short, and Sexy

Even though it's short Tina always manages to pull me in with her writing. I loved Claire and Jake. They both travel somewhere that is suppose to fulfill there wish or hearts desire. A springs that's suppose to have powers. But it's the sacrifice that makes the springs have the effect. Claire is dying and Jake is tired of being a creature of the night with no one to share it with. The two meet and sparks fly. He offers Claire something that can change her life forever but will she take it?

We get a "small" appearance from Gabriel, Zane (my favorite smart a@@) and Amaury. I would of loved a bit more of Jake's past along with Claire but it was still sooooooooooo good that I was left with a big smile on my face. Now just have to wait patiently till January for Blake's Pursuit.

Fate brings two people together to grant their true wishes. Short but a very seeet love story

This is a sweet short novelle that makes you feel warm and happy inside. Jake comes to the island in search of the water that will grant his wish to become mortal again. While there his first night he meets Claire. She is there to drink the water to grant her wish to live instead of perishing from brain cancer. Will heir wishes be granted? Sorry no spoilers from me. Habe a fan near bexause the sex is hot. You also catch a little time with Zane and Amaury. it is a quick read that will hold us over until January when her next full length novel comes out. t

Heart-warming tale!

This is great if you want a complete story but only have a very short time to read. Fabulous! It was heart warming to see Jake find both love and a purpose in life. Of course like every short story you do not get to know the characters and their pasts as intimately as you do in a full-length novel but that is the trade off for a quick finish. It was super fun to see Gabriel, Amaury, and Zane at the end. I am looking forward to Blake's story in January. Tina Folsom definitely entertains me every time!
