Chloe's books are the BEST vegan cookbooks you can own. A league all of their own....SO GOOD!
By DMC
This has very quickly become my favorite, best vegan cook book I own (and I own A LOT). Chloe is just amazing - her other two books were among my favorites as well, but she has outdone herself with this one! Let's get down to it: I've made five different recipes from this book so far:

First one I made was the Spicy Tomato Soup. DELISH! Perfect blend of heat and flavor -- and so easy! I will be making this MANY more times.

Second one I made was the Penne with Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Sauce. I could have eaten the entire pot. Just SOOOOO good! Loved it. And again, EASY to make!

Third one I made was the Cavatelli with Broccoli. Now, I have made my own version of this many times, but I am not a chef by any means, and my kids would eat it and say it was good - but they both agreed that THIS one was my BEST by far, and I totally agree with them. Such a simple dish, but I never quite knew how to put it together like Chloe does. SO EASY, SO GOOD.

Fourth one I made, just last night, was the Pumpkin Soup. I didn't have any brussel sprouts so I just left that part out (although I'm sure it's awesome). The soup was amazing! My girlfriend said it was her new favorite thing I've made. I can see making this MANY times this fall....DELISH!

Finally, this morning I made the Tuscan Tofu Scramble. Again, I've made many tofu scrambles, and again, Chloe is right when she says this one is the BEST! It really is, wow, don't know why, but just so good! Better than any other I've ever made. Must be the sun-dried tomatoes. And Chloe's magic.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY. And get her other ones too. Chloe is amazing, her food is fantastic, very easy to put together, and just turns out incredible! Plus I love looking at her gorgeous smiling face every time I go to make something! :-))

Seriously - get this book. She's the best vegan cookbook author out there - her food is amazing and easy to do. And really, her other books are amazing too.

Thank you Chloe! Keep putting out books, I will keep buying them first thing!

Easy to Make Vegan Food!
By Tim Clifford
I'm one of those vegans who isn't much of a cook. With this book, I really don't have to be. The recipes are mostly quite easy to make, and the ingredients are those found in any supermarket.

When I think Italian food, it's mostly either basic pasta with marinara sauce or something made with packaged vegan cheese. This book is like a wonderland of Italian cooking for those of us who choose to avoid animal products. Every sort of food is here, from appetizers to desserts (Chef Chloe won the Food Network's Cupcake Wars with her Raspberry Tiramisu recipe, which is included here), and from pizzas to pastas. What a treat!

I have a feeling that this is going to become a classic of vegan cooking and a staple in every vegan kitchen. Chef Chloe has done it again! Compliementi! Buon Appetito!

Divine!
By Teddy
I have tried several recipes in the book and have taken photos of how they turned out for me. Please note, I am a good cook but not a professional chef. I am much slower in the kitchen then professionals and my presentation could definitely use some work. The following photos are just to give you an idea of how some of the recipes turned out. The book itself has a lot of beautiful photos of many of the recipes within.

Since Bill and I are both over 50, our metabolisms have slowed down, luckily our appetites have slowed down as well. We will always be vegan foodies but it doesn’t take as much to fill us up. In fact, when we go out to eat, most of the time we share an entrĂ©e. By contrast, in our younger years we called ourselves “vegan vacuums”. LOL! So, soup and salad makes a nice winter meal for us.

The following are the soup recipes I made:

I love tomato soup and this recipe is my new favourite! It was very easy to prepare and along with a basic salad, made a nice lighter meal for Bill and I. It is also a very inexpensive soup to make for those on a budget and it sure beats the leading name brand of canned tomato soup, by a mile!

Here’s another soup that clearly beat out canned soup. Actually, I won’t eat canned soup. Soup is one of the easiest things to cook and is so much better home made! Okay, so I know the picture doesn’t do it justice but believe me when I say it was divine!

This time of year is perfect for squash soups! When Bill and I first started dating, he told me he loved pumpkin but hated Brussels sprouts. Well, it turned out that he had only had the frozen over cooked variety. LOL! When they are fresh and roasted, he agrees, they are delicious. This soup recipe is another keeper.

I also made the Cauliflower Soup With Pesto and Shells, except I didn’t make the pesto. It’s hard to get nice looking fresh basil this time of year and it was not in good shape at the store. We both loved this soup as well.

So, Bill and I give all 4 of the soups that I mae from this cookbook a 5 out of 5!

Now for the Pastas’ of which I made two. First I made the ‘Mama’s Spaghetti and Meatballs. I have to say that the meatballs were a bit difficult to get right. I followed the directions exactly but they turned out mushy on the inside. I had leftovers that I hadn’t cooked, so the next time I made them, the “batter” had been refrigerated. After I fried them, I put them in an oven at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes and they turned out much better. The pasta sauce is from a jar which she has you doctor up a bit. Overall, this was a good dish and I would make it again.

Another nice winter dish we enjoy is polenta. Like soup, polenta feels like a warm hug to me. Chef Chloe’s recipe is by far the creamiest I have ever made and along with the roasted veggies made it such a treat!

There are some things that I like to keep a lot of in my pantry and that includes a variety of pastas and risotto. If I don’t know what to cook one day, I can always come with with a pasta or risotto dish. We really enjoyed the Risotto in this cookbook! Bill said that it was my best ever. Though the recipe called for fresh shitake mushrooms, I used dried that I reconstituted and it turned out fine. Neither one of us felt like making a special trip to the grocery store we knew carried fresh. We usually only go to that store when we have other things planned in that neighbourhood as well. We try to be as environmentally friendly with our car as possible.

Our friends invited us over for dinner and as usual, I offered to make dessert. I had been wanting to try out the Chocolate Cherry Coffee cake recipe and decided it would be a good time to try. So, the recipe called for fresh or frozen cherries, which I didn’t have. However, during berry season I buy fresh berries and freeze them to have all year long. I decided to use blueberries. The recipe also called for chocolate chips and in hindsight, I would have preferred to use raspberries or omit the chocolate chips. You couldn’t taste the blueberries in it because the chocolate was too dominant.

Okay, so we actually had the Marmalade Pancakes twice. Once for a Sunday brunch with hash browns and vegan sausage and once as a dessert. Both times they were delicious!

Overall, this cookbook is a winner. I just have a couple small complaints. It assumes that you have a pasta maker and an ice cream maker. I have a lot of appliances and gadgets in my kitchen. However, I don’t have an industrial sized kitchen and there are a few things I don’t have. I have contemplated getting both an ice cream maker and pasta maker but have weighed how often I think I would actually use them versus, how much room they would take up. I would have loved to make the raviolli but it requires a pasta maker. I would also caution that while most of the recipes are easy to prepare, there are a few that are not for beginners.

I think that this cookbook has great recipes that are sure too please anyone’s palette, even meat eaters. Most of the recipes are easy to prepare and use readily available ingredients. Above all, they are wonderful! With the holiday season upon us, I have to say that Chloe’s vegan Italian Kitchen would make an excellent gift for anyone who love to cook and eat great meals!

I am giving it a 4.5/5 just because the meatballs have a bit of room for improvement. Otherwise it would have been a perfect score!

If you are wondering why this review seems a bit fragmented, it is because I originally wrote it for my website and had taken photos of just about everything I made. This review went perfect with the photos. You can read it on my website: http://theteddyrosebookreviewsplusmore.com/2014/11/review-chloes-vegan-italian-kitchen-by-chloe-coscarelli.html

The Nether World is a novel written by the English author George Gissing. The plot concerns several poor families living in the slums of 19th century London. Rich in naturalistic detail, the novel concentrates on the individual problems and hardships which result from the typical shortages experienced by the lower classes — want of money, employment and decent living conditions.

From the Back Cover
This is a tale of intrigue, as rapacious schemers try to wrest a fortune out of a mysterious old man who has returned to their midst, and of thwarted love. There is no sentimentality. This is a world in which the strong exercise power against their own kind, scheming and struggling for survival, a world from which, Gissing bleakly maintains, there can be no escape.

Another True Glimpse at Victorian Times
By T. George
In "The Nether World," Gissing gives you another one of his hard, realistic looks at life in London in Victorian times. This time he focuses on the poorest of the poor in the Clerkenwell area of London. These are people whom England's infantile labor laws generally can't help. If/When they can find work, they often work 16 hours per day all week, and the wages they earn hardly cover rent for a very small room in disreputable housing. It's a world where unwanted children multiply like rabbits, and the death of any family member is usually seen as a relief of one less mouth to feed.
For all these reasons, this world - this nether world - is a world about which the upper and middle classes are happily ignorant. Those born into these lowest levels of humanity often rail about the injustice of being born into such circumstances. However, their cries for social reform, their desperate attempts to better themselves, and their pitiful needs for simple pennies are never really heard or understood by those more comfortably off.
Within this novel, then, Gissing explores the lives of a range of characters as they deal with being born in the nether world. While he focuses on the heart-warming characters of Jane Snowdon and Sidney Kirkwood, Gissing competently develops the storyline of a large number of other Clerkenwell characters whose lives intertwine with Jane's and Sidney's. In his distinct manner, Gissing is mercilessly honest and yet generally compassionate with the characters whose lives he examines. Thus, he offers a glimpse of the slums - full of love, ambition, corruption, greed, and despair - in a manner that many of us would never know otherwise.
Many compare or try to compare this kind of honest look at the rougher side of London with Dickens. However, it is important to note that Dickens tended to idealize poverty and always brought things to a hopeful, positive ending. Gissing does no such thing. Though an educated man, Gissing himself suffered cruelly from poverty and mixed with these classes as he struggled to support himself as an author (see "New Grub Street"). Thus, he has no idealist views of poverty and simplistic lives.
Additionally, Gissing has a penchant for realistic storylines. It is unnerving to read his books, actually, because you can't rest on the fact that he will work everything out nicely in the end. In fact, he usually doesn't. He is courageous enough to write true-to-life outcomes to very frustrating, dispiriting circumstances. It is probably why he never became a popular author as readers often want happy endings - with a Ghost of Christmas Past if necessary - in order to relieve their consciences.
All in all, another great work by Gissing. He does get a bit preachy (even as he reveals the preachiness of others as futile), but that is easily overlooked. The accurate historical glimpse of London that he gives is invaluable. And I imagine that his brutally honest portrayal of life might speak to the impoverished among us today

Don't buy this edition
By Lara
I'm not commenting on the novel itself here (although it is an interesting, if problematic, look at London's underworld), but I do want to warn readers against buying this Echo Library edition. There is no contextual material (no intro, afterword, or notes), which would have been useful, but more annoying is the fact that the copy editor for this press appears to have been asleep while editing this edition. There are three or four major typos on every page (glaring typos-- periods in the middle of words, apostrophes instead of commas, mispelled words). Sometimes there are even words missing, which makes the prose difficult to follow. This novel is worth reading, but try to find a different edition.

A noble heart sheltered by ignorance
By H. Schneider
Gissing's novel about working class life, bleak and angry, published in 1889, shares a main plot element with Dickens' Great Expectations: an expected inheritance, here from a returner from down-under. There was a trend in Victorian fiction to write about the `condition of England'. Gissing was one of the bleakest contributors: he offered no optimism, no way out, no reason for optimism. His endings were of the kind that we saw recently in the movie Winter's Bone: deceptive little meaningless pseudo triumphs, not more than moments of rest. People don't rise from the nether world. Upper and nether worlds don't have any permeable interfaces.

Central hero of this decently depressing master piece is a qualified worker in the jewelry industry, with some lost illusions about talent in art and with a failed young love.
While still a young man, `he reached the stage of confident and aspiring radicalism, believing in the perfectibility of man, in human brotherhood, in anything you like that is the outcome of a noble heart sheltered by ignorance'. That stage was gone now, `to give place to nothing very satisfactory'. The man tries to stay decent, to have friendships, to help people worse off than he is himself...

Gissing's Pip-equivalent is young Jane, the grandchild of the old man who came back from Ossiland and who is expected to leave something to her. At the outset of the novel she is 13 and she is for all practical purposes a domestic slave in a boarding house, mistreated by a sadistic tyrant of a teenage daughter of the owner.
We get to meet rather many un-nice people down here in the nether world. Poverty is not conducive to social graces, and decency is challenged hard under miserable conditions.
Gissing was not much of a sympathizer with the 'low classes', nor was he a 'radical', nor was he a modernizer of literature. What he brought to his subject here is detailed knowledge based on own experience as well as on meticulous research. The Oxford World Classics edition that I have gives us excerpts from Gissing's note books in the appendix, where he wrote down the facts of life for use in the book.

Review

"Principles of Mucosal Immunology is an excellent book and can be recommended not only to students and professionals that wish to expand their knowledge in immunology but to the tutors of specialized immunology courses too. Furthermore, it is very detailed and clear enough to become one of the first books you reach for whenever a basic question of immunology arises." - Scandinavian Journal of Immunology

“The length of the book is optimal, covering most areas of mucosal immunology, and the depth of coverage in each area is appropriately proportioned to the available literature in the field. The quality of the color figures and diagrams are excellent. Expert contributors are internationally recognized leaders in the field of mucosal immunology. Although it has multiple authors, there is uniformity of style. In comparing this book with other textbooks of mucosal immunology, Principles of Mucosal Immunology presents not opinions of particular authors, but collective expert opinions of the Society of Mucosal Immunology with a Board of Counselors established in guiding the development of this book’s content, ensuring that the latest paradigms were presented. Therefore, this book represents the most up-to-date and comprehensive mucosal immunology textbook available…Principles of Mucosal Immunology achieves the aim of providing a standard textbook for students of all levels interested in advanced training in mucosal immunology. The book is well organized and has downloadable figures and diagrams to facilitate instructors teaching in classroom settings.”

The Illustrated Picatrix: The Complete Occult Classic Of Astrological Magic, by John Michael Greer, Christopher Warnock

The Picatrix is the most famous grimoire of astrological magic and one of the most important works of medieval and Renaissance magic. With all four books, the complete text, in one volume, translated and annotated by the noted scholars, magicians and astrologers John Michael Greer and Christopher Warnock, Picatrix takes its rightful place as an essential occult text for modern esotericists. The Illustrated Picatrix contains over 120 illustrations, with images of the 7 planets and 28 Mansions of the Moon by Nigel Jackson as well as images of the 36 decans and 12 signs by Renaissance artists. This is an authentic ancient magical text, lucidly translated and fully annotated with over 400 footnotes.

From the Author
I was first introduced to Picatrix in 1998 by my magical teacher, Robert Zoller. At that time it was only available in Latin. What Latin I now have, I learned from working with Picatrix. John Greer and I worked together for over two years on this translation, and now finally, a complete and usable English translation of Picatrix is available.

This translation is indeed complete, including all four books of Picatrix, the most famous grimoire of astrological magic. We used the Pingree's Latin critical edition, so this translation is authoritative, relying on multiple manuscripts, rather than on a single variant. Why translate from the Latin? Well, firstly John Greer, my co-translator, is an excellent Latinist, but neither of us has a sufficient grasp of medieval Arabic. However, what I do have is a mastery of traditional astrology. Picatrix is so heavily astrological that the non-expert is completely lost when it comes to making an intelligible translation. Some other translations, despite ostensibly being from Arabic, have suffered greatly from an almost complete lack of astrological knowledge, leaving large sections incoherent and incomprehensible.

By contrast, our translation of the Picatrix reveals its true sweep and splendor as Picatrix is both an exhaustive manual of practical astrological magic as well as an expansive treatise on the Hermetic philosophy of astrology, alchemy and magic. This translation includes an extensive introduction and copious annotations, over 450 footnotes for 300 pages of text!

Like Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy which relies heavily on it, Picatrix represents the distillation of many earlier works. Written circa AD 1000 in Moorish Spain and translated into Latin in 1256 at the court of the Castilian king Alphonso the Wise, Picatrix is an authentic ancient work. The author says he consulted over 200 books of magic, astrology and alchemy. Picatrix was and still remains the premier grimoire of astrological magic, the highest of high magic, combining, as it does, ceremonial magic with the precise timing of traditional astrology. Picatrix explains how to create hundreds of different types of astrological talismans, including planetary, Mansions of the Moon, decan/face and house based talismans. Picatrix includes extensive planetary invocations and ritual from the pagan Sabians of Harran, renowned medieval magicians and astrologers. Sublime Neoplatonic and Hermetic philosophy bumps shoulders with "confections" of the brain of a black dove or blood sacrifice.

We have been very careful to produce an authoritative translation of the Latin Picatrix, which will satisfy both scholarly interest as well as be of use to the contemporary practitioner. The various editions of the Picatrix, for example, this edition, the Illustrated Picatrix and the Liber Atratus, both available through Amazon, or other editions, including the Liber Rubeus and Liber Viridis Green Magic edition and deluxe large format color Illustrated Picatrix, available through the Renaissance Astrology website, all have the same authoritative, complete translation of Picatrix, newly revised from our earlier versions. The separate editions have different formatting and fonts, and add to the complete translation, additional useful and interesting material.  The Illustrated Picatrix includes gorgeous black and white images by Nigel Jackson of the 7 planets and 28 Mansions of the Moon using the specific Picatrix descriptions which add greatly to the beauty and utility of this edition.

Despite its popularity among mages, Picatrix was never published until the modern era. Finally, a complete, lucid and clear English translation is available, now with illustrations!

Impressive supplement book on dating.
By Cream Chaser
I have to say that this book by Mr. locario is good to say the least. He goes into the mentality one must have to attract the opposite sex, and that is to work on yourself! There are some aspect to this book that I don't agree with like setting up dates. Im the type of person to ask a women to have sex with her and skip dates, thats just me lol. One thing that this author does it have the reader take accountability for this and not just blame women for their flaws. We as men set the tone and environment for our dating relationships and world in general. I like who he challenges the reader on how we should force to take and be in company with women every single day. He doesn't just give fluff theory and expect the reader to be a ladies man the next day. He actually states that you will as a serial dater be rejected many times, its just how you handle it that is going to make or break your success with women. If you like reads of Alan Roger Currie, David X, Dean "the coach" Williams,Tariq Nasheed, ect then add this to your library.

Partials. by Dan Wells, by Dan' 'Wells

For fans of The Hunger Games, Battlestar Galactica, and Blade Runner comes the first book in the Partials Sequence, a fast-paced, action-packed, and riveting sci-fi teen series, by acclaimed author Dan Wells.

Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. But sixteen-year-old Kira is determined to find a solution. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that that the survival of both humans and Partials rests in her attempts to answer questions about the war's origin that she never knew to ask.

Playing on our curiosity of and fascination with the complete collapse of civilization, Partials is, at its heart, a story of survival, one that explores the individual narratives and complex relationships of those left behind, both humans and Partials alike—and of the way in which the concept of what is right and wrong in this world is greatly dependent on one's own point of view.

Amazon.com Review
Robison Wells Interviews His Brother, Dan Wells

Dan Wells is the acclaimed author of the John Cleaver series: I Am Not a Serial Killer, Mr. Monster, and I Don’t Want to Kill You. He has been nominated for both the Hugo and the Campbell Award and has won two Parsec Awards for his podcast Writing Excuses. Robison Wells, Dan’s younger brother, is the author of Variant, which Publishers Weekly called “a chilling, masterful debut” in a starred review, and its sequel, Feedback (available Fall 2012). Here, Robison interviews his brother about Partials, Dan’s pulse-pounding first book in his post-apocalyptic series that questions the very concept of what it means to be human.

Robison: Dan is my brother, exactly 13 months older than me. He and I shared a room our entire childhood, took the same classes, even dated the same girls. Dan got me into writing about twelve years ago, and ever since we’ve critiqued each other’s work, brainstormed new ideas, and told each other how terrible he is. So, with such a long background together, I’m particularly interested to see if I can learn anything new in this interview.

I’ve read so much of your writing over the years, from your poem about turkeys in the fifth grade to your first epic fantasy to your literary farce to your horror, and now your YA post-apocalyptic Partials. Is there anything you’ve written that I’d be surprised to hear about?

Dan: I wrote some Rifts fan fiction in high school—I don’t know if you knew about that. I actually reused a part of it for Partials.

Robison:What part?

Dan: I won’t say, but it’s in the first third.

Robison: You’ve written in all these different genres: Is it because you’re still looking for the perfect fit? Or are you just interested in writing lots of different things?

Dan: Almost every book I write is a new genre, or a weird combination of genres, because I like to branch out and try new things. I never would have imagined that I’d write a horror series, but that was the first book I published. I never would have found that character, or the audience that loves him, if I’d forced myself to stick to one thing.

Robison: How was the transition from supernatural to sci-fi?

Dan: Not too bad, since I see them as very connected—the only real difference between fantasy and SF is the explanation of where the weird stuff comes from. SF ended up being a lot harder, in some ways, because I had to make those explanations scientifically sound. In my horror series I could just say, “It’s a monster!” With SF I had to do a ton of research into genetics, biology, and the science of decay.

Robison: How did you do your research?

Dan: A lot of my research started online, including Wikipedia—people make fun of it as a research tool, and I admit that it’s a terrible place to end your research, but it’s a fantastic place to start. From there I found more detailed websites, and eventually some great connections to books. One of the most useful books I read was The World Without Us by Alan Weisman, about what would happen to the things we leave behind if we suddenly weren’t there to take care of them. It’s a very detailed combination of scientific research and thought experiment.

In Partials, the apocalypse wasn’t a bomb or a war or anything physically destructive, just a disease: We died, but all our stuff is still just sitting there. It was a fun situation to study, and a blast to depict in a book.

Robison: So, having done all that research, what tips would you give for surviving an apocalyptic pandemic? Let’s assume you’re immune to the virus.

Dan: I don’t know how you’re going to work that out, but there you go. Once you have that taken care of, you live in a combination of paradise and medieval squalor. You will have no electricity or running water, but almost everything else will be free. Canned food can last for a decade or more before going bad, so you can live at a subsistence level just by scavenging the local stores.

Robison: Why do you think your society of survivors ended up being organized and civil and less Mad Max-ish?

Dan: A big part of it is the scarcity issue. Mad Max and similar apocalyptic scenarios start with the premise that everything is destroyed. The survivors have to fight tooth and nail for what little resources are left. In Partials, everything you could ever want is just there for the taking.

Robison: What books/movies/music/TV influenced Partials?

Dan: Some of the influences are obvious, like Battlestar Galactica and Children of Men. Others are harder to spot. I listened to a steady diet of protest songs and revolutionary music while writing, stuff like “Uprising” by Muse, because they got my blood going and helped me get into the main character’s fiery personality. And some of my influences didn’t really end up in the book, though I still count them—things like Mad Max and A Canticle for Leibowitz that inspired my love of post-apocalyptic stories, but which didn’t really apply in this case.

The biggest influence may have been our own history and current events. Partials is, at times, a very angry book, and that’s a reflection of my own feelings about a lot of the stuff I see going on in the world.

Robison: Let’s talk about that. You’ve said before that you think one of the reasons dystopia is so popular right now is because our world is becoming more dystopian. What current events influenced you in Partials?

Dan: For example, the story is set eleven years after a devastating catastrophe—and in 2012, my readers are also eleven years after their own devastating catastrophe. The events of 9/11 changed the way we do almost everything in this country, and to a lesser extent the rest of the world. One of the things I tried to do in the book was show that the adults, who remember what life was like before the end of the world, have a very different attitude about it than the kids who’ve never really known any other life.

I also tried to throw in a lot of the extreme measures our government and our culture in general have taken in response to terrorism—reduced privacy, indefinite detention, torture, and so on. I think there are arguments on both sides of all these issues, and I tried to give each side a fair shake. Kira, the main character, has very strong ideas about what’s justifiable and what’s not, and just because she’s the main character doesn’t mean she’s always right. If anyone’s actually “right” at all.

Robison: So, on a happier note, why do you think I’m so awesome?

Dan: Because you take after your brother.

From Booklist
In the last half of the twenty-first century, there are very few humans left in the United States. The Partials, genetically engineered humanlike creatures built to fight the U.S.’s wars, attacked their overlords with a deadly virus. Kira, a medical intern, wants desperately to figure out how to save babies who are dying from the virus they’re infected with at birth, and comes up with a plan. Persuading her friends, including boyfriend Marcus, that all they need to do is kidnap a Partial and figure out why it’s immune to the virus, she leads them on a harrowing mission—several, actually. A Partial is obtained, but the result reveals far more questions than answers. This book does several things very well. The Long Island setting, along with the configuration of Kira’s struggling society, is fully realized, and the many twists and turns keep readers intriguingly off-balance. But some trimming, especially of the medical discoveries, would have helped maintain the momentum. Kira is a bold heroine with lofty goals, and readers will willingly follow her to the sequel, where things are sure to tilt again. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The publisher is putting lots of push behind this one, with an extensive marketing campaign that includes social media outreach, exclusive digital content, and plenty more, so expect it to pop up on your radar. Grades 8-12. --Ilene Cooper

Really surprised by this!
By M. K.
review I was torn between giving this a 3 or a 4, (it was a solid 3 for me in the middle, but near the end I couldn't put it down and it shot up to a 4) but in the end a four won out. This book was really good though! I think the best part of the entire thing was that IT WAS NOT PREDICTABLE. Sure it's a dystopian that takes place in the future after some terrible war and some terrible virus has been unleashed, and there's way too much baby/ pregnancy stuff in here for my taste, but at least the world building was nice and gave good reasons for the way things were/ happened and generally made sense.

Seriously thought, there were times when I thought I had this book figured out and then it went in a TOTALLY different direction. Actually none of the scenarios that I had playing out in my head actually happened in the book.

Kira was a little dry for me at times, and she got so angry and sassy at the most random moments. I did like a lot of the supporting characters, and Marcus was a nice change of pace from the usual love interest. I also liked how this wasn't really focused on romance but it had romance in it.

I loved Samm and I can't wait to see more of him in the next book. I really hope he plays a large part in it and gets developed a lot more.

Just a few things that did bother me... why was Samm swearing in Japanese? I noticed it twice and it was NEVER EXPLAINED. Hell, if you don't know that 'kuso' is a Japanese swear word then you probably wonder wtf he just said (and both times he used it was in reaction to something that would constitute swearing as the proper reaction). The repetition of 'plague babies' was annoying, and good lord was 'kudzu' ever overused while describing things.

Partials was alright
By Danielle
Overall, I thought Partials was alright. A solid 3. The beginning was slow, and personally, until around halfway through Part Two, I wasn’t too impressed. Samm’s introduction won me over. That’s when things got interesting. For the most part, Kira’s world was believable, leaving me feeling just as scared and as desperate as she felt at times. I appreciate that the romantic subplot between Marcus and Kira took the backseat, but it did suffer because of it. The character’s were a bit one-dimensional, bland, and a few felt like caricatures of overused tropes. I didn’t really feel anything for most of them, even Madison, who was essentially the driving-force behind Kira’s will to cure RM. I might read the sequel, mostly because I’m interested to see where the plot goes, I like Samm’s character, and because Kira isn’t at all a terrible–or annoying–protagonist. I actually like her idealistic nature and fearlessness.

Well paced
By Kara K. Prem
Another dystopian future! Partials takes place about 45 years in the future. About 20 years before the book begins, the US went to war with China, and created "Partials" - not quit humans, look like humans, fight better and heal better than humans (think Cylons) to fight the war for us. After the war, the Partials were relegated to menial jobs and not welcomed into society, so they rebelled, and around the same time a deadly disease, RM wiped out most of the human population. The assumption is that the Partials unleashed the disease. Plus, not a single child has been born and survived since RM was unleashed. Babies are born healthy, but die within a few days

What's left of humanity is living on Long Island (I think - my knowledge of New York City is pitiful at best). The Senate is in control passing laws making pregnancy mandatory at age 18 (then dropped to 16) with the idea that maybe, just maybe if enough people have babies, one will live. There is a resistance group, the Voice which has been launching attacks agains the Senate.

Kira, a teenage medic has been working in the maternity ward (not much point in school anymore, you get your job training and get out there and help society) and she desperately wants to find a cure for RM, but nothing that has been tried has worked. However, she believes that the answer to the cure lies in studying a Partial, but cannot get permission to journey back to the mainland to capture one. So, with a group of friends, she does just that. The book picks up in action from this point, looking at what Kira learns, and setting up the storyline for the next book or two in the series.

The book was fast paced, and the societal structure was pretty interesting. I've seen criticisms that this book is once again about the teens being smarter than the adults - and I can see that, but I also see that the adults were just too focused on survival and rebuilding to focus on the matter the way Kira did. I've already started the 2nd book.

superb erotic Regency romance with a lot of Dash
By A Customer
In London Maryanne Hamilton found the season quite tedious so she decides to attend the infamous party at Mrs. Master's salon. However, she also is editing the memoirs of aging prostitutes so they can earn a retirement income from their published works. Maryanne is especially excited by the exploits of Lord Dashiel Blackmore, who lives up to his name as every prostitute insists he adds dash to the boudoir.

When Dash meets Maryanne in a house of ill repute that no lady would enter, he assumes she is a courtesan; not the innocent she is. He wants her and lets her know he plans to take her. She wants to flee yet cannot resist his lure.

This is a superb erotic Regency romance in which the audience will agree with the prostitutes that Dash adds that and more to a fine mix. Maryanne is a wonderful counter to Dash as he assumes she is a courtesan and she does not fully correct him. This is a delightful page-turner that will have sub-genre fans seeking the author's other works (see SIN) as Sharon Page heats up the era.

5 Kisses, TwoLips Reviews
By Linda D. Crooks
In the prologue of Black Silk by Sharon Page, Lady Farthingale is willingly ravished by five men for her aging lover's voyeuristic pleasure. Then she's bound and gagged, and disappears. The mood for the book is set, and readers are prepared for a lusty and intriguing read.

Dashiel (Dash) Blackmore, Lord Swansborough, who readers will remember as the dark and thoroughly debauched viscount from the first book in the series, Sin, is being framed as the mastermind behind Lady F's abduction, as well as a similar case a week prior. He's innocent, so who is framing him and why? Revenge?

Maryanne Hamilton, erotic artist Rodesson's second eldest daughter, is proofreading an erotic manuscript when she receives a desperate plea for help from a friend and business associate who has gone missing. She decides to go to the location specified in her friend's note, despite the considerable personal risks involved, partly because she wants to experience her own exciting adventure. She has no idea what she's really getting herself into.

While searching for her friend, she runs into Lord Swansborough at what turns out to be an erotic scavenger hunt. He thinks she's a doxy hired for the evening's entertainment, and she prays he won't recognize her as his good friend's sister-in-law. He has played a starring role in all her naughty fantasies, and now here he is in the flesh. They're only together for one passion-filled night, but it's enough to make "Verity" (the false name she gives him) pregnant. Of course, once her brother-in-law finds out what has transpired, he insists that Dash marry her. But the marriage is off to a rocky start, made even more difficult by Dash's shadowy past. Betrayal leads them to the face of danger - but whose face is it?

I love how Sharon Page gets right to the good stuff right from the beginning of Black Silk, and somehow manages to do it tastefully and without feeling rushed, forced or contrived. She's a master at intertwining passion, suspense and heartfelt emotions. Her characters are intelligent and likeable. This book is a wild ride from beginning to end with some excellent surprises, and I found myself anxious to read the third book in the series.

Rake gets reformed
By Melissa
For years bookish Maryanne Hamilton has kept secrets. The first is that she is editing erotic literature from a well known courtesan, Georgiana, and the second is that she is very attracted to Lord Dash Swansborough. These two secrets prove to be her downfall one evening when she receives a frantic note from Georgiana requesting her help. Maryanne dons a mask and goes to a bawdy house looking for her friend. She is nowhere to be found but she does see Lord Swansborough.

Dash believes Maryanne to be a Cyprian and together they have quite a passion filled night without Dash ever discovering Maryanne's identity or even her name as she had given him a fictitious one.

Dash is a man with many issues but they never detracted from his innate charm. He has a family which is a true albatross, a mentally unstable uncle, an insatiable sister-in-law, a vindictive cousin but a kind sister. Also adding to his troubles, Dash is an unofficial suspect in a string of missing and dead women. He is suspicious of almost everyone as there have been attempts on his life.

When Maryanne and Dash are forced into a wedding, things become even more heated and passionate between them. Dash really wants to trust his wife and she really wants to trust him. Together they slowly lower their emotional walls with each other. The vulnerability is a little more believable on Dash's part than Maryanne's though.

The mystery of the missing women is still hounding Dash and now he must not only worry about his own life but his wife's too. This is a good romance with a lot of passion and a decent mystery.
