The Beautiful Mystery: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel, by Louise Penny

The brilliant new novel in the New York Times bestselling series by Louise Penny, one of the most acclaimed crime writers of our time

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as "the beautiful mystery."

But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery's massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Sûreté du Québec. There they discover disquiet beneath the silence, discord in the apparent harmony. One of the brothers, in this life of prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, before restoring peace, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between.

The Beautiful Mystery is the winner of the 2012 Agatha Award for best novel, the 2013 Anthony Award for best novel and the 2013 Macavity Award for best novel.

“With enormous empathy for the troubled human soul--and an ending that makes your blood race and your heart break--Penny continues to raise the bar of her splendid series.”
―People Magazine (4 out 4 stars)

“Penny writes with grace and intelligence about complex people struggling with complex emotions. But her great gift is her uncanny ability to describe what might seem indescribable – the play of light, the sound of celestial music, a quiet sense of peace.”
―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

“Gorgeous writing…fresh and fully realized.”
―The Washington Post

“For the reader, meanwhile, there's a final beautiful mystery to contemplate: How does Penny consistently write such luminous and compassionate books?”
―The Seattle Times

“It’s a stirring, thought- provoking read, less a matter of whodunit than a relentless questioning of why any of us do anything. The Beautiful Mystery satisfies as a mystery, and stands as a powerful literary novel in its own right, regardless of whether one has read the previous seven novels in the series.”
―Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail

“Penny, the author, meets the challenge of setting a death in an utterly exotic location and then making the mystery and investigation just as enthralling. Never mind the side plot, a romance between the detective and his boss's daughter that seems too perfect to believe. This is mystery writing at its best, a novel in which everything – the crime, the characters, the setting, the plot – pulls the reader to the final pages.”
―Christian Science Monitor

“Penny shows us the joy of the cloistered life as surely as she has shown us the joy of village life…for fans of the series, the resulting bombshell in the characters’ lives is as much like murder as anything ever delivered by a blunt instrument.”
―The Charlotte Observer and Raleigh News & Observer (Salem Macknee)

“Powerful… the road to the finale is the stuff of grand suspense.”
―Toronto Star

“With The Beautiful Mystery, there's no longer any doubt: Penny is Canada's best contemporary crime writer, among the best in the world, and one of our best writers, period.”
―Winnipeg Free Press

“Penny ― who melds prose at once expressive and restrained with a keen understanding of human emotions ― creates a novel that earns its title, a book that shines with the grace and compassion that stamp her work.”
―Richmond Times Dispatch

“If it’s possible for Penny to outdo herself, she has accomplished it…In The Beautiful Mystery, she casts the meditative spell of Plainchant on the human spirit. With riveting suspense to the very last paragraph, Penny weaves a deepening web of intrigue as the two men battle their inner demons in the cloistered community, while the all-too-worldly politics of the religious community penetrates even the deep forests of Quebec Province.”
―BookReporter

“Gamache and Beauvoir play off one another brilliantly, offering a stirring point/counterpoint with regard to the spiritual and secular issues that have become such an element of modern life.”
―BookPage, Top Pick in Mystery

“Louise Penny has crafted an almost perfect crime―haunting, puzzling, brilliant and indeed a most beautiful mystery. Chief Inspector Gamache is one of my favorite characters in fiction. Here he must penetrate a cloistered monastery deep in the northern woods of Quebec, where a murdered monk is his ticket to get in. This is a tour-de-force for Penny, and a thrilling, intelligent read.”
―Linda Fairstein

“A. Ma. Zing! A remarkably courageous―and very beautiful―book that leaps the abyss between faith and despair.”
―Diana Gabaldon

“Elliptical and often oracular… also remarkably penetrating and humane. The most illuminating analogies are not to other contemporary detective fiction but to The Name of the Rose and Murder in the Cathedral.”
―Kirkus Reviews

“An entire mystery novel centering on Gregorian chants (whose curiously hypnotic allure is called the "beautiful mystery")? Yes, indeed, and in the hands of the masterful Penny, the topic proves every bit as able to transfix readers as the chants do their listeners.”
―Booklist (starred review)

“Elegant… This heart-rending tale is a marvelous addition to Penny's acclaimed series. Fans won't be disappointed.”
―Library Journal (starred review)

“Traditional mystery fans can look forward to a captivating whodunit plot, a clever fair-play clue concealed in plain view, and the deft use of humor to lighten the story's dark patches. On a deeper level, the crime provides a means for Penny's unusually empathic, all-too-fallible lead to unearth truths about human passions and weaknesses while avoiding simple answers.”
―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY (Chapter 1)

As the last note of the chant escaped the Blessed Chapel a great silence fell, and with it came an even greater disquiet.

The silence stretched on. And on.

These were men used to silence, but this seemed extreme, even to them.

And still they stood in their long black robes and white tops, motionless.

Waiting.

These were men also used to waiting. But this too seemed extreme.

The less disciplined among them stole glances at the tall, slim, elderly man who had been the last to file in and would be the first to leave.

Dom Philippe kept his eyes closed. Where once this was a moment of profound peace, a private moment with his private God, when Vigils had ended and before he signaled for the Angelus, now it was simply escape.

He closed his eyes because he didn’t want to see.

Besides, he knew what was there. What was always there. What had been there for hundreds of years before he arrived and would, God willing, be there for centuries after he was buried in the cemetery. Two rows of men across from him, in black robes with white hoods, a simple rope tied at their waists.

And beside him to his right, two more rows of men.

They were facing each other across the stone floor of the chapel, like ancient battle lines.

No, he told his weary mind. No. I mustn’t think of this as a battle, or a war. Just opposing points of view. Expressed in a healthy community.

Then why was he so reluctant to open his eyes? To get the day going?

To signal the great bells that would ring the Angelus to the forests and birds and lakes and fish. And the monks. To the angels and all the saints. And God.

A throat cleared.

In the great silence it sounded like a bomb. And to the abbot’s ears it sounded like what it was.

A challenge.

With an effort he continued to keep his eyes closed. He remained still, and quiet. But there was no peace anymore. Now there was only turmoil, inside and out. He could feel it, vibrating from and between the two rows of waiting men.

He could feel it vibrating within him.

Dom Philippe counted to one hundred. Slowly. Then opening his blue eyes, he stared directly across the chapel, to the short, round man who stood with his eyes open, his hands folded on his stomach, a small smile on his endlessly patient face.

The abbot’s eyes narrowed slightly, in a glare, then he recovered and raising his slim right hand, he signaled. And the bells began.

The perfect, round, rich toll left the bell tower and took off into the early morning darkness. It skimmed over the clear lake, the forests, the rolling hills. To be heard by all sorts of creatures.

And twenty-four men, in a remote monastery in Québec.

A clarion call. Their day had begun.

“You’re not serious,” laughed Jean-Guy Beauvoir.

“I am,” nodded Annie. “I swear to God it’s the truth.”

“Are you telling me,” he picked up another piece of maple-cured bacon from the platter, “that your father gave your mother a bathmat as a gift when they first started dating?”

“No, no. That would be ridiculous.”

“Sure would,” he agreed and ate the bacon in two big bites. In the background an old Beau Dommage album was playing. “La complainte du phoque en Alaska.” About a lonely seal whose love had disappeared. Beauvoir hummed quietly to the familiar tune.

“He gave it to my grandmother the first time they met, as a hostess gift, thanking her for inviting him to dinner.”

Beauvoir laughed. “He never told me that,” he finally managed.

“Well, Dad doesn’t exactly mention it in polite conversation. Poor Mom. Felt she had to marry him. After all, who else would have him?”

Beauvoir laughed again. “So I guess the bar is set pretty low. I could hardly give you a worse gift.”

He reached down beside the table in the sunny kitchen. They’d made breakfast together that Saturday morning. A platter of bacon and scrambled eggs with melted Brie sat on the small pine table. He’d thrown on a sweater this early autumn day and gone around the corner from Annie’s apartment to the bakery on rue St-Denis for croissants and pain au chocolat. Then Jean-Guy had wandered in and out of the local shops, picking up a couple of cafés, the Montréal weekend papers, and something else.

“What’ve you got there?” Annie Gamache asked, leaning across the table. The cat leapt to the ground and found a spot on the floor where the sun hit.

“Nothing,” he grinned. “Just a little je ne sais quoi I saw, and thought of you.”

Beauvoir lifted it into plain sight.

“You asshole,” Annie said, and laughed. “It’s a toilet plunger.”

“With a bow on it,” said Beauvoir. “Just for you, ma chère. We’ve been together for three months. Happy anniversary.”

“Of course, the toilet plunger anniversary. And I got you nothing.”

“I forgive you,” he said.

Annie took the plunger. “I’ll think of you every time I use it. Though I think you’ll be the one using it most of the time. You are full of it, after all.”

“Too kind,” said Beauvoir, ducking his head in a small bow.

She thrust the plunger forward, gently prodding him with the red rubber suction cup as though it was a rapier and she the swordsman.

Beauvoir smiled and took a sip of his rich, aromatic café. So like Annie. Where other women might have pretended the ridiculous plunger was a wand, she pretended it was a sword.

Of course, Jean-Guy realized, he would never have given a toilet plunger to any other woman. Only Annie.

“You lied to me,” she said, sitting back down. “Dad obviously told you about the bathmat.”

“He did,” admitted Beauvoir. “We were in Gaspé, in a poacher’s cabin, searching for evidence when your father opened a closet and found not one but two brand-new bathmats, still in their wrapping.”

As he spoke he looked at Annie. Her eyes never left him, barely blinked. She took in every word, every gesture, every inflection. Enid, his ex-wife, had also listened. But there was always an edge of desperation about it, a demand. As though he owed her. As though she was dying and he was the medicine.

Enid left him drained, and yet still feeling inadequate.

But Annie was gentler. More generous.

Like her father, she listened carefully and quietly.

With Enid he never talked about his work, and she never asked. With Annie he told her everything.

Now, while putting strawberry confiture on the warm croissant, he told her about the poacher’s cabin, about the case, the savage murder of a family. He told her what they found, how they felt, and who they arrested.

“The bathmats turned out to be the key pieces of evidence,” said Beauvoir, lifting the croissant to his mouth. “Though it took us a long time to figure it out.”

“Is that when Dad told you about his own sad history with bathmats?”

Beauvoir nodded and chewed and saw the Chief Inspector in the dim cabin. Whispering the story. They weren’t sure when the poacher would return, and they didn’t want to be caught there. They had a search warrant, but they didn’t want him to know that. So as the two homicide investigators deftly searched, Chief Inspector Gamache had told Beauvoir about the bathmat. Of showing up for one of the most important meals of his life, desperate to impress the parents of the woman he’d fallen hopelessly in love with. And somehow deciding a bathmat was the perfect hostess gift.

“How could you have thought that, sir?” Beauvoir had whispered, glancing out the cracked and cobwebbed window, hoping not to see the shabby poacher returning with his kill.

“Well, now,” Gamache had paused, obviously trying to recall his own thinking. “Madame Gamache often asks the same question. Her mother never tired of asking either. Her father, on the other hand, decided I was an imbecile and never mentioned it again. That was worse. When they died we found the bathmat in their linen closet, still in its plastic wrapping, with the card attached.”

Beauvoir stopped talking and looked across at Annie. Her hair was still damp from the shower they’d shared. She smelled fresh and clean. Like a citron grove in the warm sunshine. No makeup. She wore warm slippers and loose, comfortable clothing. Annie was aware of fashion, and happy to be fashionable. But happier to be comfortable.

She was not slim. She was not a stunning beauty. Annie Gamache was none of the things he’d always found attractive in a woman. But Annie knew something most people never learn. She knew how great it was to be alive.

It had taken him almost forty years, but Jean-Guy Beauvoir finally understood it too. And knew now there was no greater beauty.

Annie was approaching thirty now. She’d been a gawky teenager when they’d first met. When the Chief Inspector had brought Beauvoir into his homicide division at the Sûreté du Québec. Of the hundreds of agents and inspectors under the Chief’s command, he’d chosen this young, brash agent no one else had wanted as his second in command.

Had made him part of the team, and eventually, over the years, part of the family.

Though even the Chief Inspector had no idea how much a part of the family Beauvoir had become.

“Well,” said Annie with a wry smile, “now we have our own bathroom story to baffle our children with. When we die they’ll find this, and wonder.”

She held up the plunger, with its cheery red bow.

First, but not the last...
By Jill Meyer
"The Beautiful Mystery" by Louise Penny is Penny's first book I've read, but it surely won't be the last. It is one of the best written, almost lyrical stories I've read in a long time. Yes, "The Beautiful Mystery" is part of a series of seven previous books starring Armand Gamache, but the book is an excellent novel that transcends its "police procedural" designation and becomes simply a beautifully written novel.

Set in Montreal, Surete Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is sent, along with his aide, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, to a monastery hidden away in the hills and forests well outside the city. A monk has been found murdered in the garden and the head of the monastery - Dom Philippe - has reluctantly sent for the Surete to investigate the murder. But this is no ordinary monastery; the 24 monks living within have taken vows of silence and express their religion through their beautiful Gregorian chants. They had recorded their chants on a CD from which they hoped to earn a modest amount of money to fix up their dilapidated building. The order - the Gilbertines - was actually a renegade religious order who had fled England for Canada 400 years before. (The reader can learn an awful lot of history by reading this book.) But the CD of chants had struck a chord outside the monastery walls and had become a world-wide best-seller. Suddenly a previously obscure bunch of monks were famous for their singing and money, a by-product of their success, had become an issue in the congregation. There was division as the leaders couldn't decide whether or not to seize their success and record another CD of beautiful, spectral music.

But if the Gilbertine monks were caught up in power struggles, so were the members of the Surete sent to work the case. Louise Penny updates the feuds and battles within the upper ranks of the police organisation she had previously written about in her series. For someone like me, who hadn't read the previous novels, Penny was able to strike the right note of filling in the back story without boring those who already knew what had come before.

Penny's novel becomes almost like the beautiful and heavenly Gregorian chants as she combines different plot points and characters to tell a nuanced story that rivals the chants in their intricacy. There's not a false move in her writing and the novel is compelling reading. As I wrote at the beginning, this is my first Louise Penny novel, but it sure won't be my last!

Expectations were too high
By eve
Although I am a huge Louise Penny fan and have eagerly awaited each new arrival, I must confess I was a bit disappointed with this one. I found the ending melodramatic and Beauvoir's actions near the end simply unbelievable. I wish she would bring the factory raid chapter to a close and let these characters get on with their lives.

Not her best
By Dr Crone
I've loved Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books, but this one -- yet another variant on the classic closed room or closed site story -- seems to be stretching Gamache's history with internal Surete politics and a traumatic raid out too far. It also reads as if someone told her it would punch things up to use more sentence fragments, which I just found irritating. I like her creation of a lost religious order, the references to Gregorian chant, amd the strong visual sense of the locked monastery. I will of course continue to read the Gamache books as soon as they come out (Kindle book preorders are the ultimate instant gratification!) but I hope the next one puts some old history to bed and ditches the pseudo-journalistic style. Clearly there will be more of these, because the last chapter seems constructed to pack in as many cliff hangers as possible, short of an actual cliff.

China and the West: Hope and Fear in the Age of Asia, by Fokke Obbema

China sees its relations with the West as absolutely crucial to its future. This wider relationship, between the new world and the old, is changing the global political and economic landscape. But can Europe and China overcome their cultural and political differences to develop a relationship of trust? Here, experienced journalist Fokke Obbema travels through Europe and China and speaks with dozens of entrepreneurs, students, experts and politicians. He shows how mutual relations are affected by a feeling of superiority on both sides, and sheds light on the thousands of interactions between people in finance, politics, economics and education. Above all he shows how a fear of China has permeated the discourse, and that we should instead take a balanced view of the future of China relations, even be excited by the change which is coming. Apart from anything else, the west could be on the brink of another financial disaster - What if the Chinese Don’t Come?

Enjoyable
By Autamme_dot_com
China seems to be suffering from growing pains, caused no doubt as a reflection of its massive growth and internal change in recent times, with its interaction with the rest of the world coming back and being amplified. Just like a teenager, it has believed it is invincible and yet there is still a lot of change awaiting it, some good, some bad…

This book provides a great, credible look at China and considers how the country is developing, changing and interacting with the west. With power comes responsibility and in many ways the country has an unenviable balancing act to achieve. It still needs its partners around the world, they may still need or desire them, yet it has to look also closer to home as the world’s fastest growing economy and largest population mean that the potential for change and reverberated impact is great. Can China learn to trust and embrace the west? Can this largesse be reciprocated?

The author has done a lot of research, discussing with experts in many areas of finance, politics, economics and education to look at how the west currently views and evaluates China and, of course, vice versa. It all made for an engaging, informative book. It shows that adjustment and change may be required by both sides yet the jury is out if both sides will be prepared to make reasonable accommodations. Time and circumstances will tell.

There are no wild-eyed forecasts or predictions contained within the book, just a fairly open, clear and articulate look at matters. It can be an ideal book for anyone who has more than a passing interest in economics, politics or just current affairs.

“China and the West---Hope and Fear in the Age of Asia” , a terrific book on the fraught relations between the West and China.
By Amazon Customer
China ‘s rise is changing the world in various ways Is the change for the better or for the worse? What’s the right approach to China ? These days many people around the world have been tackling such questions.

Among them is Fokke Obbema, a Dutch journalist and former chief editor of the influential daily de Volkskrant business section. As Obbema struggles with such questions, he also tries to provide reasonable and fair-minded answers with his newly published “China and the West---Hope and Fear in the Age of Asia”.

Based on his interviews with entrepreneurs, students, politicians, laborers, diplomats, social workers, prostitutes, shopkeepers, writers, government officials and China experts in Germany, France, the United States, the Netherlands, Italy and elsewhere, and on his wide reading in research literature in English, French, German and Dutch, Obbema has produced a very interesting book on how in his view the Western countries should look at and deal with China today.

On many important issues (such as China’s politics and its foreign policy), he entertains the reader with his well-researched and thought-provoking presentations.

PreS-Gr 1—It is a cold winter day and Little Elliot decides to spend it exploring the big city while his best friend, Mouse, attends his very large family reunion. As Elliot walks through the streets, rides the subway, and strolls through the park, he observes the wonderful diversity of the many families he passes. Elliot wonders what it would be like to have a family of his own. Taking in a movie to escape the cold, Elliot becomes sad and lonely in the big, empty theater. When the movie ends and he leaves the theater, he is pleased to discover that Mouse has come looking for him. Together, they return to the family reunion where they enjoy a wonderful evening filled with dancing, laughter, and Mouse's grandmother's warm cheese chowder. Elliot realizes that he does have a great big family after all. Set in 1940s New York City, this picture book is warm and inviting. The illustrations are rich and interesting, introducing young children to life in another era. Children may recognize many of the landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park. The art creates an inviting atmosphere that draws readers in and keeps them lingering on each page, while the text tells an appealing story of family and friendship. VERDICT Let's hope for more stories about this adorable polka-dotted elephant and his loving pal.—Amy Shepherd, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Middleton, DE

another great story about a determined elephant and his unlikely friends (and family!)
By Miss Print
With Mouse away at a big family reunion, Elliot decides to take a walk in the city where he sees all kind of families. The more families he sees, the more Elliot wonders what it means to be on his own. But as Elliot soon learns, families can come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they might even choose you in Little Elliot, Big Family (2015) by Mike Curato.

Everyone's favorite polka dotted elephant is back in this delightful follow up to author/illustrator Mike Curato's debut Little Elliot, Big City. When Elliot is feeling very alone, his best friend Mouse comes to the rescue and invites Elliot to the mouse family reunion. Soon enough Elliot is enjoying the festivities and finds himself an honorary member of the mouse family.

Curato's distinctive style once again brings New York City to life as Elliot travels around the city in Mouse's absence. While the idea that families are unique is a familiar one in picture books, Curato's illustrations add extra gravitas to make this story stand out.

Little Elliot, Big Family is another great story about a determined elephant and his unlikely friends (and family!). Great for story times or one-on-one readings.

Simple tale, lovely pictures
By D. Jennings
The one really is all about the illustration.....beautiful drawings of 1930s New York that seem to be illuminated from within.... not realism, but extremely detailed and eye-catching. Like the previous Little Elliot book, the text is minimal and the person reading the book may have to fill in the blanks and embellish the story. The tale is only this: Elliot's friend Mouse goes off to a reunion of his very large family, and Elliot wanders the city feeling very much alone. When he returns, Mouse is there and takes Elliot to a mouse family dinner where he feels very welcome, and is happy again. this might be a great starting point for a parent or teacher who wants to discuss the family you choose vs the family you're given, but still my four-year-old reading companion wonders WHY is Elliot, who is clearly an elephant CHILD, living all alone without family or anyone taking care of him? I couldn't come up with a good answer for that.

HOT quick read
By Nadine
Gavin and Sasha have been lusting after one another since their parents were married two years earlier. Since Sasha is attending beautician school she uses that as a pretense to get Gavin right where she wants him. I found this one more erotic then some of the other Stepbrother Stud stories, the way they got off while watching the other taking care of themselves was HOT! And I don't think I will ever look at a guy getting a shave at the salon the same again.

Sexy!
By Laurel H.
Sasha’s practicing her beautician skills on her little stepbrother, but he wants to practice something else. She gives him just what he was looking for, and more. Loved how sexy this was, but the feels were off the charts too. These two were just meant for each other.

Sexy as All Get Out!

Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., by Ron Chernow

John D. Rockefeller, Sr.--history's first billionaire and the patriarch of America's most famous dynasty--is an icon whose true nature has eluded three generations of historians. Now Ron Chernow, the National Book Award-winning biographer of the Morgan and Warburg banking families, gives us a history of the mogul "etched with uncommon objectivity and literary grace . . . as detailed, balanced, and psychologically insightful a portrait of the tycoon as we may ever have" (Kirkus Reviews). Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller's exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book will indelibly alter our image of this most enigmatic capitalist.
Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world's richest man by creating America's most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.
Rockefeller was likely the most controversial businessman in our nation's history. Critics charged that his empire was built on unscrupulous tactics: grand-scale collusion with the railroads, predatory pricing, industrial espionage, and wholesale bribery of political officials. The titan spent more than thirty years dodging investigations until Teddy Roosevelt and his trustbusters embarked on a marathon crusade to bring Standard Oil to bay.
While providing abundant new evidence of Rockefeller's misdeeds, Chernow discards the stereotype of the cold-blooded monster to sketch an unforgettably human portrait of a quirky, eccentric original. A devout Baptist and temperance advocate, Rockefeller gave money more generously--his chosen philanthropies included the Rockefeller Foundation, the University of Chicago, and what is today Rockefeller University--than anyone before him. Titan presents a finely nuanced portrait of a fascinating, complex man, synthesizing his public and private lives and disclosing numerous family scandals, tragedies, and misfortunes that have never before come to light.
John D. Rockefeller's story captures a pivotal moment in American history, documenting the dramatic post-Civil War shift from small business to the rise of giant corporations that irrevocably transformed the nation. With cameos by Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, Jay Gould, William Vanderbilt, Ida Tarbell, Andrew Carnegie, Carl Jung, J. Pierpont Morgan, William James, Henry Clay Frick, Mark Twain, and Will Rogers, Titan turns Rockefeller's life into a vivid tapestry of American society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is Ron Chernow's signal triumph that he narrates this monumental saga with all the sweep, drama, and insight that this giant subject deserves.

The Christian Capitalist
By Jonathan Shafer
Chernow's biography is both exhaustive and readable. The author's interpretive decision to weave Rockefeller's affiliation with the Baptist Church into his subject's pathos was interesting and compelling. It was enjoyable to read how Chernow chose to resolve the contradictions that he identified between Rockefeller's faith in unbridled capitalism and compassionate religion.

I'm not familiar enough with the sources Chernow referenced to understand whether he contrived those contradictions, but they paint the portrait of a man who was shockingly unconflicted about his achievements as one of the most successful business-people in American history.

It's a good book!

A More Complete Understanding.
By James B. Moon
After completing a history of Butte, MT, I wished to gain a better understanding of Standard Oil's role in the formation of Anaconda Copper. When I found that Mr. Chernow had written a biography of John D. Rockefeller, I knew I would learn how Standard Oil and Anaconda Copper fit together. Titan did not disappoint. The nexus of Standard Oil to Anaconda was actually through the investment of individual officers of Standard Oil and not the actual "evil" corporation. In addition, John D. Rockefeller had literally nothing to do with the Anaconda creation as he had already "retired" from the daily management of Standard Oil. The Butte history I recently read was written in about 1933 and did a poor job of explanning the Standard Oil nexus.

Ron Chernow is a thorough researcher and provides substantial detail in bringing his subjects to life. I ratesd this book as a four star selection only in as much as some of the details of Rockefellers children and grandchildern became a little tedious. I am not sure I really was looking for as detailed a history of all the decendant's nerouses.

Major learnings from Mr. Chernows work were

1. Rockefeller's strick adherence to fundamentalist Baptist faith.

2. Rockefeller's role in developing the Mesabi Iron Range, something I knew nothing about before reading this book.

3. The role of questionable ethics used in growing Standard Oil and not violation of law.

4. The fact that Rockefeller made almost all of his petroleum fortune before the "invention" of the automobile and subsequent demand for gasoline. Kerosene for lighting drove his fortune.

5. The role John D. Rockefeller, Jr. played in establishing Grand Tenton, Smokey Mountain, Acadia National Parks and Colonial Williamsburg.

6. The life view John D. Rockefeller had on philanthropy as he really had a life long commitment to spend his wealth for the benefit of others. He died with an estate of less than $30 million dollars at 97 years of age, about 2 1/2 years short of his life-long goal of living to 100 having given away over $500 million (estimated at $30 billion in current dollars).

7. Rockefeller's role in the creation of the University of Chicago and its early growth to one of the country's elite schools.

As with previous Chernow biographies I have read, this book left me with a feeling that I had gain a pretty exhaustive view of the man and his times.

His opinion about his wealth was that "God made him good with Money"
By TomR
For the first time we get to see just who Rockefeller was from his own side and point of view. First of all he was a highly moralistic Christian---Any hypocrisy on his part he was unaware of. His opinion about his wealth was that "God made him good with Money", That "his Money was really GOD's Money" and "God was only letting him have stewardship over it because he was so good with managing it (for God)"

Another point I found interesting--He was not (he claims) motivated by GREED to gather control or own the Oil Industry. The industry of the time, was so volatile with prices making drastic swings even with the discovery of single wells, It was almost impossible to manage---Workers continually being laid off and hired back, drilling companies and refineries going bankrupt, bought off, sold off, etc. The vital oil business was CHAOS

He made a few attempts to stabilize or "fix" prices by the establishment of and use of producer cartels. But their would always be cheaters who would undercut their efforts.

Rockefeller felt the only way to stabilize the industry at the time, was to try to buy ALL or as many as he could out.
It worked-----and finally stabilized the industry. But of course, after time, the monopoly served its purpose---It began to have detrimental effects near the turn of the century.---Which caused the Feds to break it up into several competing companies.
So overall, I got the impression that Rockefeller did what he thought was right, and not out of greed as his enemies charged. But his initial measures DID cause problems a little further down the road--and he was unwilling to do what needed to be done on his own.--Till the Feds had to jump in.

What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding: A Memoir, by Kristin Newman

A funny, sexy, and ultimately poignant memoir about mastering the art of the "vacationship."

Kristin Newman spent much of her twenties and thirties buying dresses to wear to her friends' weddings and baby showers. Not ready to settle down and in need of an escape from her fast-paced job as a sitcom writer, Kristin instead traveled the world, often alone, for several weeks each year. In addition to falling madly in love with the planet, Kristin fell for many attractive locals, men who could provide the emotional connection she wanted without costing her the freedom she desperately needed.
Kristin introduces readers to the Israeli bartenders, Finnish poker players, sexy Bedouins, and Argentinean priests who helped her transform into "Kristin-Adjacent" on the road–a slower, softer, and, yes, sluttier version of herself at home. Equal parts laugh-out-loud storytelling, candid reflection, and wanderlust-inspiring travel tales, What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is a compelling debut that will have readers rushing to renew their passports.

From Booklist
Television scribe Newman (How I Met Your Mother, The Neighbors) shares her comedic and romantic adventures abroad during the last decade-and-a-half. After spending her twenties in serious relationships yet afraid, ultimately, of settling down permanently, Newman got bit by the travel bug and discovered that the best way to battle her commitment phobia was to romance handsome strangers abroad. These brief “vacationships” satisfied Newman’s desire for excitement and passion while not making her feel trapped. She cavorted with a handsome bartender in Russia, a sexy former priest in Argentina, and an aggressive surfer in Brazil. Newman describes the exotic locales as lushly as she does her companions, taking armchair travelers to Iceland, Australia, and Israel and sharing some of her travel snafus, such as losing her passport in Buenos Aires and being deemed a potential terror suspect by Israeli authorities seemingly because she’s a single woman in her thirties traveling alone. Newman adeptly mixes humor and heart, making this the perfect read for anyone in search of love, adventures abroad, or both. --Kristine Huntley

Review
“Kristin Newman reminds me of David Sedaris, but with more joy.” –Diablo Cody

“Kristin Newman’s tales of wanderlust are at turns hilarious, embarrassing, and then truly inspiring. Her thrilling escapades make me want to get up off the couch and book a ticket to some exotic locale for a sexy adventure of my own. But I probably won’t. And neither will you. Just read the book.” –Jane Lynch

‘Kristin Newman explodes the idea of the ‘singles scene’ into a thousand tiny fragments and scatters them globally. This is misspent youth well-spent.” –Patton Oswalt

“What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is kind of like if Eat, Pray, Love were written by your funniest friend—a laugh-out-loud life guide for anyone who needs some help enjoying being single. Or for anyone who already loves being single. Or for anyone who is married. Basically, whoever you are, Newman will make you want to chuck it all and book a trip to Argentina.” –Rachel Dratch

“Spoiler alert: I am the Will who drives a car over Kristin’s foot in the Dominican Republic. After writing with Kristin at That ‘70s Show, I knew that her book would be incredibly funny, but it’s also so heartbreaking, insightful, and full of adventure, romance, and sex sex sex! Do yourself a favor and read this book! Did I mention how funny it is and how much sex is in it?" –Will Forte

"If Mark Twain was a woman and he had actually done things in the countries he traveled to, he would have been a lot more pleasant. He also would have written this book instead of The Innocents Abroad. This book is so good that, of the many I have blurbed, this is the only one I read." –Joel Stein, columnist for Time, author of Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masculinity

"I have had the pleasure of joining Kristin on some amazing adventures and can say without question that she is as good a writer as she is a traveler. Which is to say, slightly better when she's had a few glasses of wine." –Nick Kroll

“I love my husband and kids, truly I do—but reading What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding  makes me want to buy a one-way ticket around the world, or rather two tickets—one  for me and one for her—so we could party till dawn, flirt with hairy European men and break several international laws. Kristin puts the 'lust' in wanderlust and makes adventuring and even mis-adventuring sexy, fun, and at times even inspirational.” –Jill Soloway, writer/director

“Since we can’t all sit next to Kristin Newman at a dinner party, it’s a good thing she wrote What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding so we can all enjoy her funny and unexpected tales.  Unlike the rest of us, Kristin took the road less traveled and that has made all the difference. Her sparkling wit and adventurous spirit will seduce you just as it did that guy in Argentina…and in Russia…and in Jordan…and so on...” –Nell Scovell, co-author of Lean In

“What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is sly disguised as sexy. It reminded me of George Eliot mixed with a woodshop safety film... a complete delight.” –Stephen Tobolowsky, actor, author of The Dangerous Animals Club

"I wanted to read this book but my wife stole it off my nightstand, laughed at it for three nights straight and lent it to her friends." –Rodney Rothman, author Early Bird: A Memoir of Premature Retirement

"Kristin's book is such an uproarious, side-splitting, jaw-dropping-while-miraculously-somehow-also-self-reflecting page-turner, it makes me feel like I traded in my own wife and children for a time machine and a spot in her globetrotting duffel bag." –Rob Kutner, writer for Conan, author of Apocalypse How and The Future According to Me

"Riotously funny, brutally honest, and hopelessly romantic… Newman's global romps and brave takedown of the dated, divisive dichotomy between happy breeders and desperate singles is one of the most refreshing things I've read in a long time and proof that everyone has her own path to happily ever after." –Attica Locke, nationally bestselling author of The Cutting Season

"Newman’s funny and unflinchingly honest memoir reveals that even though there’s nothing quite like a great party in an exotic locale with a hot guy, true love doesn’t necessarily require a passport."  –Publishers Weekly

"You should *not* judge a book by its cover, but luckily this one's as engrossing as its top flap, which I kind of wanted to dive into on sight. There are lots of books out there about being the single girl in your crowd, but Kristin Newman's is a special one; it's truly hilarious and travel-oriented, which makes it perfect for summer." –Glamour Magazine

"If you liked Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs, try What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding by Kristin Newman." –Boston Globe

I loved it!
By budabugmama
Kristin's book is hilarious, raw, self-deprecating, honest, and insightful. As I read it, I rooted for her; I was heartbroken for her; I laughed with her; and I was taken in by her stories. "What I was doing while you were breeding" is not only a laugh-out-loud look into her international escapades - it also made me think. I could understand her relationship-over-analysis and romanticism, I appreciated many of the memorable messages in the book (from her dad: don't do anything until you've watched your friends do it first and learned from their mistakes; from her mom: would you rather have one scary moment or a whole summer of loneliness?). And I could relate to many of the insights she uncovered as she examined the last 10 years of her life. One of my favorite lines from the book: "...life is almost never about choosing between one thing you really want and another thing you don't want at all. If you're lucky, and healthy, and live in a country where you have enough to eat and no fear that you're going to get shot when you walk out your door, life is an endless series of choosing between two things you want almost equally." Can't wait to see the movie!

A Hilarious Read on Cultural Differences with Plenty of Naughty Bits
By Willie
I am a well travelled Northwestern alum so I felt a double affinity for the author from the start. Her book was one I read over two days while on the exercise bike at the gym. I broke out laughing so many times that my gym mates must have been wondering about me! But a book written by a comedy writer should do that to the reader!

Like Kirstin, I love to travel. In my case, I have been to 80 countries and lived in 9 of them for at least a year. Before I got married for the first time at 49, I traveled much like Kirstin and had more romances than I could count. But being male, that probably would be more culturally acceptable to many. Personally, I would not judge her differently than I judge myself. I doubt I would be brave enough to publish a book that included my romantic adventures, though, if it were not under a pen name. So I give her bonus points for bravery!

My only criticism is that she butchered quite a few place names and words in Spanish and Portuguese (my 2nd and 3rd languages). But her read on foreign cultures made up for that. Thanks, Kirstin, for writing this! And, of course, go 'Cats!

Not your average travel memoir
By S. Patterson
I've recently gotten really into travel memoirs, mostly because I am really feeling the need to travel lately, but also because I won't be traveling much in the near future and thus turn to my tried and true books to temporarily transport me somewhere new.

This book immediately jumped out at me for the title and pretty cover, and a few short days later I was reading it. This is definitely a book that you'll decide is or is not for you within the first few sentences, and luckily I liked Kristin and her writing style right off the bat.

Each chapter is a different travel story and while some trips take place in the same country, each story is different from the last and equally as interesting as the others. If you're looking for a book that describes places, you'll probably be disappointed. Kristin's stories are focused on her travels, yes, but more so on the people (read: sexy men) she meets and falls in love with abroad. I found myself laughing out loud more than once while reading, even when I was in public and risked getting funky looks from those around me. Kristin is hilarious and I agree with other reviewers who said reading this book is like hanging out and drinking with your best friend while she tells you her crazy stories. You'll want to be Kristin's friend by the end, guaranteed.

When Kristin isn't sharing details about her travels and international boyfriends, she tells the reader about her career as a comedy writer in Hollywood. It's a nice change up and break in between her travels, especially since work is such a huge part of her life in addition to her ventures overseas.

I particularly liked Kristin's views on choosing one life path versus another and the fact that most of us often have some kind of longing for the path we didn't take - and that is OK. But she also discusses making major life changes and how it's a GOOD thing to sometimes miss what you had before even though you're excited about the new direction in your life, because it means you've traded "awesome for awesome."

This is a great book to read if you need to laugh or just want to read about another woman's crazy adventures. Read it whether you're in a relationship or not, married or not, have kids or not. At the very least, I guarantee it'll motivate you to go "do something in the place you're supposed to do it." I know it did for me. Great, fun read!
