Hough Johnson's Pocket Wine Book has always been the best book about the world of wine. This years edition is, by far, the best yet. The description of many of the wines are fuller with much more info than in past years. If you enjoy wine, like me, you have seen and bought this book in the past. The 2017 edition is a must have for any wine lover-it is that good.

I work at Rodale and was lucky enough to be a test panelist for the program outlined in this book. Let me tell you...it works! Peter just has a unique gift of getting through to people, helping them get over whatever emotional ties they have to "stuff."

"I might need this one day" is no longer an excuse I use to keep unnecessary items, and I'm finding happiness in other places, not buying "stuff."

This book lays out a plan to create a vision for each room in your house and then systematically helps you declutter each room. It actually made decluttering and letting go of things, dare I saw it, fun.

For years, I knew I had to get more organized and get rid of things, but no one has ever gotten through to me like Peter has. I lost almost 12 pounds on the book, and my house is looking better and better every day. Thank you, Peter!

Organizational guru Peter Walsh helped me think through changes I have been making and continue to make. "Somehow, at some point, you become too large for your comfort," he writes at the beginning. He also helps explain how stuff, emotions and eating are all related and not helping me get the life I want and deserve. I want a conversation with him on diet programs, although he gives a simple program and simple exercises. He even meddles with my finances and email, but all to my benefit. I am in the process of downsizing and his logic helps me divide my stuff into Zone One and Zone Two. Thank you, Peter, for nailing it!

Loving it!

Still reading it. I'm starting week #2 tomorrow which is decluttering the bedroom. Peter Walsh has great information, gives lots of encouragement and brings in experts for the diet and exercise portion and the mindfulness meditation. I'm doing my own diet right now, but I love how his is set up. You have so many healthy choices its not a diet, but being mindful about healthy food choices. The exercise portion is great if you don't have any equipment. I go to the gym, but the book offers good options. The parts on being mindful are incredibly helpful when dealing with cravings or emotional attachment to stuff. It has really changed the way I look at things. Going through my kitchen in week #1 was difficult at times, but also very rewarding. I have filled 3 kitchen garbage bags for the trash and put 3 boxes of items for a garage sale, or to give away. It is a great relief to have a vision for the spaces in my house and work to accomplish it. My house is not messy and it doesn't look cluttered, but inside my cupboards...holy Hannah! I have found things I'd forgotten about and never use. It feels great to make decisions about those things and move them out.

So I'm off to week #2 for another cathartic experience!! I highly recommend this book!

Adventure, Intrigue, and Suspense

This Gun for Hire / The Confidential Agent / The Ministry of Fear

These three adventure novels were all filmed by Hollywood in the 1940s. These stories are similar to the Eric Ambler novels where an ordinary person gets caught up in government intrigue but manages to survive. While fictional, there is a moral lesson to these stories. Their settings reflect the European politics of the 1930s. You can watch Greene's progress as a writer.

"This Gun For Hire" is about a killer hired to bump off an old politician. The corporation that hired him paid this gunman with money that was stolen; if caught he would be guilty of a robbery. This gunman resolves to take revenge on those who double-crossed him, and does. It is an adventure novel that recalls Continental politics of that time.

"The Confidential Agent" is about a middle-aged politician sent to England to buy coal supplies for his government; or to prevent them from being acquired by the other side in their civil war. D. fails in the first, but succeeds in the second by sheer luck. We get a glimpse of corporate politics behind the scenes. D. escapes England in an unbelievable ending.

"The Ministry of Fear" is about a middle-aged man just released from a sanitarium. By luck he acquires a home-made cake made from fresh ingredients (war time rationing). But this gets him involved in a spy-ring operating in London as part of the "Free Mothers" charity organization. Bombings, committal to another sanatorium, and an escape to find Scotland Yard (they don't think he is crazy). They catch the spies before the secret microfilm leaves the country. [This novel gets bogged down by too much psychological prattle. The film was much better.] The Ministry of Fear refers to the way secret services can blackmail people into doing what they want because of hidden scandals in their past.

Scholarly but generally readable

I believe this is designed to be a college textbook, but I found my self fascinated by it. As with any text, readibility is sometimes sacrificed for scholarly accuracy, and rightly so, I suppose. But I found enough life in the text to make this a compelling read, given the breadth of the topic and the depth in which it is examined. I also found the illustrations to be directly relative to the text, which does not always happen, even in college texts. Of course, to get really into a book like this, one has to have an inborn interest in the topic. It's not going to be for everyone, and that is why I gave it three stars instead of four. Still, I found the book to be a satisfactory combination of hard scholarship and general interest history to make my want to keep my copy. My only complaint is that, not knowing European geography as I would like to, it was difficult to follow many of the detailed discourses about the different tribal movements from place to place. Perhaps more maps would help. In the end, it's hard, scholarly history, but if that's your thing, it's a keeper.

Scholarly work

This book was written by a large team of authors, each of whom wrote a particular chapter. I assume, therefore, that they have special expertise in that particular period or subject, and although this work may be a little too dry and scholarly for some, I found it provided excellent coverage and that it was still readable. The book benefits from recent research which the chapter authors discuss, and the illustrations are excellent, with the many pictures of artifacts, works of art, and grave excavations that I hadn't seen before in other works being probably the most striking thing about the book. Also, I would like to compliment the author of the excellent and very detailed discussion of copper and bronze metallurgy, where he discusses the advantages of two-piece castings of hand-axes in the later Bell-Beaker culture using arsenical copper, which aids both hardness and castability, which was very interesting. And in general, the dicussions of archaeological finds relating to improvements in cultural artifacts such as pottery making, metallurgy, weapons, and building techniques are one of the major strengths of the book. Overall, a worthwhile read although possibly a little too dry and technical for many people, and actually, I would give it 4.5 stars if I could.

As interesting a treatment as prehistory gets

The Oxford Illustrated History of Prehistoric Europe faces a Herculean task: to provide readable access to a delicate phase of history that is not easily comprehended - due to it's ever-shifting time boundaries - and the fact that, for much of prehistory, concepts and conclusions are chiefly formed from conjecture, due to a lack of fluid factual historical data.

Such it succeeds in doing formidably. At the time of writing the reviewer is still only at the chapter dealing with Reforming Barbaric Europe at the end of the Bronze Age (9). So far, the read has been mostly accessible to this undergraduate student, even if, on one or two of the initial chapters, a lot of technical language, and language related to biology and plants, made understanding harder. A complaint would have to fall on a perceivable lack of maps, especially in the initial chapters dealing with events taking place in the Continent. Many German towns or villages, and other places, will possibly escape the average reader (wikipedia had to be heavily used). There are some maps included, but these are certainly insufficient.

In broad strokes, except for the chapter by Sherratt on the Later Neolithic and Copper Ages, where a regional description of the different material remains is the order of the day which in this particular case makes for an extremely dull read, the articles tend to be concise, written in fluid prose, and thus provide an enjoyable reading experience.

Let us not forget the peculiar character of this delicate period, that of prehistoric and protohistoric Europe (the book covers prehistory from the Lower Paleolithic to a final chapter on Barbaric Europe (AD 300-700)), that, safe for the true enthusiast, is quite alien and hard to relate to for the rest of us. Still and all, the present Oxford tome provides an illuminating passage into this world. The rich illustrations that help visualize the subject matter being treated are a very helpful addition.

There is also a section with Chronological Tables at the back, that neatly summarize the main events, regionally, throughout Europe and farther afield (of the periods covered in the book), including also later aspects such as a list of the Roman Emperors, and so on - a most useful addition.

Overall, if you wish to delve into these themes and get a good idea of what characterizes the different epochs of prehistory (Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages, subsequent Barbaric Europe) this is definitely the tome to pick up - it is by far the most interesting book I have read on these topics. The book comes well bound, with a flexible paperback binding, and a very helpful further reading section with other literature on the specific chapters - certainly, you'll find your curiosity spiked by the reading of this volume, and I'm sure you'll subsequently want to read further into the areas that most interested you.

It should be noted that the initial articles on the Palaeolithic, especially the first, and the third on the Mesolithic, as well as those of the Neolithic (excluding Sherratt's first) deserve particularly worthy mention, for being so interesting and well laid out, especially considering how usually these more remote phases of prehistory are incredibly tiresome to learn about. This does not, however, mean that the subsequent treatment of the Minoan and Mycenaean Palace Cultures, as well as Bronze Age Europe are not exciting as well.

The overall usefulness of this book cannot be emphasized enough. A compelling and engaging introduction and sufficiently detailed analysis of prehistoric and protohistoric Europe from Oxford that should not be missed. 4.5/5

Steve Hickner is a film director at DreamWorks Animation. He has directed the films The Prince of Egypt and Bee Movie. He has also worked as storyboard artist on Peabody and Sherman, Shrek Forever After, Over the Hedge, Madagascar, Shark Tale, and Antz. Hickner has worked at a number of studios, including Walt Disney Animation Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation, where he was a producer for An American Tail: Fievel Goes West and Balto. He recently began working on DreamWorks’ theme park and location-based projects. He frequently lectures at universities throughout the United States. Although the book is aimed at those involved in creative mediums the truths that he presents and illustrates are good for whatever career you are wanting to develop. His "rules" are presented in such a way that they grab your attention and hit home. Hammer and Champy do a great job of detailing through the reengineering concept and process. They use understandable examples, and communicate benefits, challenges, and necessities well. A bit dry to read and get into, once I got past the beginning, this book moved along nicely.

Good Summary of the Benefits of Fresh Thinking

This book's subject is the popularized version of the business concept of management process design. Making that concept more accessible is a very useful contribution. The downside of this book is that many people have assumed that it teaches you everything you need to know to do management process design, or to reengineer key processes. That, alas, is not true. If you find the subject of process design or reengineering to be of interest, I suggest that you first read James Champy's excellent book, REEENGINEERING MANAGEMENT. That book is a good template for how to make any beneficial change in an organization, including reengineering. Then, if you want to get fired up to make major changes, use REENGINEERING THE CORPORATION as a way to create passion about the subject for yourself. But do remember, you may not even have all the processes you need, so reengineering is not the only answer. For example, what is the management process that your company uses to improve its stock market valuation? If you are like most, you do not even have an effective process for stock price enhancement. So be sure to see if you have processes where they will do you the most good.

Ridiculous

I've read many of Kelly Favors "books" aka chapter installments and have quite enjoyed them but the reason I'm writing a review is because I would NEVER pay this amount of money for these. I have kindle unlimited and all of her books have always been available through there and now for some reason they are not. This is absolutely ridiculous. I will say with certainty that I will never read another of her serial chapter books especially now that they are $2.99 for 30 pages. I was already kind of done before this because it's difficult to keep up with all these different stories without having to go back and read part of the last book and never knowing just how many installments will be in the series so maybe I could just wait until they were all out before I started the story. I just wish I would have known they were taking these books off kindle unlimited. Very disappointed.

She enjoys volunteering at her children's schools and for a charity her husband founded called Building Bridges. She also loves photography, drawing, kickboxing and, of course, writing.

Just Because: Where Seeing Another Point of View Makes a Better You

I'm the father of two daughters and one is almost 5. This book that Amber has created is about a topic dear to my heart--empathy. Our culture has become all about "me" and Amber Housey has written a children's book which captivates the world of a child in such a way they learn to see the points of view of others.

The book is brilliantly written, the artwork is stellar and most important, the message is well articulated and engaging to the child. I've shown this book to other parents and they ask, "when is the next one coming out??"

I highly, recommend you consider purchasing this book as a means to convey a very poignant message to children. That when we see another point of view, it makes our life more enriched and fulfilling.

The investment in this book will leave lasting imprints on your child's heart and mind. A book you will read to them over and over again.

Great book to teach kids about giving and caring about others.

Just Because is a great way to show young children empathy and giving. It is a way to instill a habit into their lives that will stay with them forever. It also reminds adults that it only takes a little effort to make a big impact in someone else's life! It is a wonderfully written book that children get drawn into. I have never seen a children's book that shows both perspectives of a situation. Great for teaching kids and a great jumping off point for more conversations with your kids. Can't wait for the next book in the "Flip Side" series!!!

EXCELLENT children's writer, with a noble goal...

First off, Amber Housey is easily the best children's writer to come out in recent memory. Not only is this book engaging for children, but adults can learn from the moral of the story, as well. The illustrations are lovely (not too 'garish' in color, but beautiful and relevant for the material being presented). Keep your eye on this amazing author, she's not remotely finished writing incredible stories for kids. Thanks, Amber, you've succeeded in helping to make a 'better me', already.
