Review
Excellent information about the major problems with evolution and gives very lucid explanations of why Creationism makes the most sense. -- Roger Kubly, March 20, 2004

From the Publisher
Too often scientific content is verbose and obscure. Evolution Shot Full of Holes offers four easy-to-understand persuasive arguments. The book is concise and graphically beautiful. Every teenager needs to read this book.

From the Author
Thomas Huxley became known as a great promoter of Darwinism (also known as Darwin’s bulldog), his grandson, Julian Huxley, a biologist. humanist and writer penned these words: "Evolution . . . is the most powerful and the most comprehensive idea that has ever arisen on earth."

Evolution has indeed become the single most powerful influence drawing people away from faith in God. At the same time the scientific evidence in favor of creation is becoming increasingly obvious. Christians need to learn about some of this evidence. Frank Sherwin of ICR and myself (Jim Bendewald) provide irrefutable evidence against evolution by using the four concepts of mutations, information, the cell and the Cambrian Explosion.

The book incorporates concepts like irreducible complexity, DNA, protein folding, reproduction, punctuated equilibrium and fossils. Appendix A provides an excellent resource for common questions. Appendix B is a resource for applying the concepts of the book in discussions with evolutionists. It also provides chapter summaries with suggested questions for discussion.

Creation/evolution debate
By Stephen K Huffman
While there are any number of good books on this topic, this one has some features I found particularly helpful. First of all, the terms used were clearly defined. I didn't have to wade through pages trying to find definitions. Secondly, the arguments presented were not only understandable, but usable. I felt I gained enough information about both sides to defend my position if I were involved in a discussion of this issue. Finally, the authors provided several questions at the end of each chapter that helped me think about what I'd read and gain a better understanding of the material.
All in all, Evolution Shot Full of Holes is a book that I will refer back to and recommend to others.

Sound arguements. Excellent gift.
By Joseph W. M.
I read this book yesterday, today I odered 5 more copies. A well written book, in language that almost anyone can understand. Yet, it provides very sound, logical arguements. Irrefutable. An excellent gift idea. This is a great book! I will very likely order more copies in the future. I wish I would have found this book years ago.

Training Wheels and Boxing Gloves
By Beau R. D. Lee
This book's introduction sums it up quite well: "The subject matter in this text is not comprehensive; rather, it was designed to be easily understood and persuasive" (p. 14). This book begins with a list of definitions that are unusually clear, alowing readers new to the topic to build a strong foundation. The training wheels come off after the introduction, however, and, to the credit of the author, the boxing gloves come out. In a most clear fashion, this book leaves the starting blocks of the introduction with a vengence and respectfully blows holes in a theory we were all taught to be concrete fact. Referring back to the quote in the introduction, I found this book to be both "easily understood and persuasive" - a definite gem in my referral catalog.

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened, by Allie Brosh

#1 New York Times Bestseller

“Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices.

This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written.

Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to.

FROM THE AUTHOR:
This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book:

Pictures
Words
Stories about things that happened to me
Stories about things that happened to other people because of me
Eight billion dollars*
Stories about dogs
The secret to eternal happiness*

*These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, November 2013: Who among us has not, in moments that sometimes bleed through years, even decades, felt weird, desperate, and absurd--wishing we could turn all the lamest, most shameful episodes in our lives into hilarious illustrated anecdotes? If youre one of the millions hanging on Allie Brosh's every blog post, you already know you'll love Hyperbole and a Half in book form, especially since half its hyperboles are new. If you're suspicious of books because you live in a world of the INTERNET FOREVER, this is where you make an exception. If you just stumbled across Brosh and can't yet grasp the allure of a Web comic illustrated by rudimentary MS Paint figures, believe the hype. Brosh has a genius for allowing us to channel her weird childhood and the fits and starts of her adulthood through the manic eyes, gaping mouths, and stick-like arms in the panels that masterfully advance her stories, and she delivers her relentless commentary with deadpan hilarity. Neurosis has rarely been so relatable and entertaining. --Mari Malcolm

Guest Review of Hyperbole and a Half

By Bill Gates

Bill Gates is a technologist, business leader, and philanthropist. He grew up in Seattle, Washington, with an amazing and supportive family who encouraged his interest in computers at an early age. He dropped out of college to start Microsoft with his childhood friend Paul Allen. He married Melinda French in 1994 and they have three children. Today, Bill and Melinda Gates co-chair the charitable foundation bearing their names and are working together to give their wealth back to society. This review originally appeared on Bill’s personal blog the Gates Notes on May 19th, 2015.

Some of the books I’ve recommended as summer reads really aren’t. They’re long nonfiction books that might look a little out of place beside the pool or on the beach.

But Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things that Happened , by Allie Brosh, is an honest-to-goodness summer read. You will rip through it in three hours, tops. But you’ll wish it went on longer, because it’s funny and smart as hell. I must have interrupted Melinda a dozen times to read to her passages that made me laugh out loud.

The book consists of brief vignettes and comic (in both senses of the word) drawings about Brosh’s young life (she’s in her late 20s). It’s based on her wildly popular website.

Brosh has quietly earned a big following even though, as her official bio puts it, she “lives as a recluse in her bedroom in Bend, Oregon.” The adventures she recounts are mostly inside her head, where we hear and see the kind of inner thoughts most of us are too timid to let out in public. Despite her book’s title, Brosh’s stories feel incredibly—and sometimes brutally—real.

I don’t mean to suggest that giving an outlet to our often-despicable me is a novel form of humor, but she is really good at it. Her timing and tone are consistently spot on. And so is her artwork. I’m amazed at how expressive and effective her intentionally crude drawings are.

Some of Brosh’s stories are funny without being particularly meaningful, such as her tales about her two dogs and their humorously illogical inner thoughts. Here’s a typical snippet: “To the simple dog, throwing up was like some magical power that she never knew she possessed—the ability to create infinite food. I was less excited about the discovery because it turned my dog into a horrible, vomit-making perpetual-motion machine.”

And here’s a typical illustration:

But her best stuff is the deep stuff, especially the chapters about her battles with severe depression. There is a lot of self-revelation here but no self-pity. She brings the same wit to this subject as she does to her stories about her dogs—even if it makes the reader more likely to tear up than crack up.

Here’s a typical snippet that follows a riff about feeling suicidal and not quite knowing how to let loved ones know about these feelings:

I suspect that anyone who has experienced depression would get a lot out of reading this book. The mental illness she describes is profoundly isolating: “When you have to spend every social interaction consciously manipulating your face into shapes that are only approximately the right ones, alienating people is inevitable.” It must be empowering for those who have struggled with depression to read this book, see themselves, and know they’re far from alone.

It might be even more valuable for those who have a friend, colleague, or family member who has experienced depression. Hyperbole and a Half gave me a new appreciation for what a depressed person is feeling and not feeling, and what’s helpful and not helpful. Here’s a good example: “People want to help. So they try harder to make you feel hopeful…. You explain it again, hoping they’ll try a less hope-centric approach, but re-explaining your total inability to experience joy inevitably sounds kind of negative, like maybe you WANT to be depressed. So the positivity starts coming out in a spray—a giant, desperate happiness sprinkler pointed directly at your face.”

I get why Brosh has become so popular. While she self-deprecatingly depicts herself in words and art as an odd outsider, we can all relate to her struggles. Rather than laughing at her, you laugh with her. It is no hyperbole to say I love her approach—looking, listening, and describing with the observational skills of a scientist, the creativity of an artist, and the wit of a comedian.

“I would gladly pay to sit in a room full of people reading this book, merely to share the laughter.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

"My wife, who rarely reads a book published after 1910 and who is difficult to make laugh, wept with pleasure while reading these comic illustrated essays from Ms. Brosh, who runs a popular web comic and blog. I had to find out what the fuss was about. The subjects run from light (cakes, dogs) to dark (the author’s own severe depression), and they foreground offbeat feeling and real intellect. This book is way better than cigarettes.
By Lac
I got the book this morning, and as I was hobbled by pain from an ACL surgery and unable to take painkillers because they would make me loopy at work, instead I read this all day. (Shhhhh. It is okay. I also helped customers.)

There are a million things I love about this book, but I can start with the fact that each chapter is printed on different-colored pages than the ones on either side of it, which makes the book look like a rainbow when it is closed. A RAINBOW, GUYS.

The Depression chapters (previously published on her blog) are revelations to those who have experienced depression and touchstones of understanding for those who have not. The Dog chapters are hilarious to both dog-lovers and cat-lovers (AKA dog haters). The chapters that peek into her childhood make me wish I remembered anything about my life before I was twelve. But you know what? I'm going to take a page from this book, and just imagine that my childhood was just as fantastical, wild, revelatory, unintentionally hilarious, and unique.

Yes, there are a few chapters that are repeats from the blog. Sadly, the fish incident did not make it... that one is still my favorite. But the ones that did make it are definitely worth the re-read. Also, the majority of the book is new material, including some introspective chapters ("Thoughts and Feelings" and the two-part "Identity" chapters). Those, to me, were the best ones of the whole book. I love that the author is so freaking honest (can you swear on Amazon? Imma go with no) about EVERYTHING. She holds this mirror up to her guiding principles and then picks everything apart until she's left with this uncivilized and selfish husk, which she then covers up in a sparkly jumpsuit to make it all better. WHICH IS SOMETHING WE ALL DO. We're all basically uncivilized and selfish. But this author has the guts to admit it.

YOU ARE BRAVE, ALLIE. YOU ARE.

I feel strangely proud of the author for producing this book. Proud like a father, even though she is no relation to me and I have never really met her. I want to give her all the gold stars possible. If there were more than five available for this review, I would have gone with more than five. All the way up to eleventy.

Buy this book. Read it. Go read the blog. Re-read everything. Then buy the book for your friends.

Give it ALL the stars!
By J. Garner
I've been a fan of Allie Brosh's (Allie? Can I call her Allie? Is that weird?) blog for years now, so I was never not buying her book. Her blog is less a series of wordy posts about what happened that day and more comic strip about fish murders, spiders, spaghatta nadles, and the single strangest childhood since Drew Barrymore's.

Her book? It's an offline edition of her blog. So in other words, it's just about perfect. Some new...chapters? Posts? What do you even call these? Anyway, parts of the book are new, others are from the blog, all put together in something approaching a coherent narrative. I'm not terribly upset about blog posts being included in the book. It wouldn't make sense without some of them, and some others are just so good and so well-known that to leave them out would make the book incomplete.

It's much bigger than I had expected, containing a good eighteen chapterposts from 10 to 50 pages long each, but that doesn't matter because you'll read the whole thing in one sitting if you're not a communist. The first chapter alone has swearing at a two-year-old, time travel, and nudity of the most gratuitous sort. In that order.

The thing about this book (and Allie's blog) is...beyond the laughs, she's actually really good. Her two posts on what depression is like (both included here) are the best explanations I've ever seen. And what look initially like simple stick figure drawings are actually surprisingly detailed illustrations that convey a full range of emotion. The art is good, the stories are fantastic, and her telling of them is what makes it all work. Most importantly of all, the cover is a pleasing shade of yellow.

Buy a copy for yourself. Buy one for the office, one for the house, one to keep in the gentleman's closet, one for your neighbors, one for everyone you know for Christmas. You'll like it, they'll like it, it'll class up both your workplace and your toilet.

A great value!!!
By Dee Spencer
This is a really wonderful Atlas. I would have expected to pay a great deal more for a volume of this quality. I was a Navy Quartermaster and a lot of our charts were not of this good quality. What a bargain.

By Myrna Minkoff
Although glossy and pretty, this Atlas might have been published in the 1950s...nothing about the style and choices has been updated from a large Atlas I owned as a child. I am not complaining about the data and the map details, I have no doubt that they are current. I object to the editorial choices, which seem ridiculous in the internet age. Sure, if you have the internet, you probably don't need an atlas. But about 100 percent of Amazon customers have some access to the internet. IMO, a "new concise" Atlas should not bother including every small town in the world. Nor should it include roads except in remote places. I want a handy, big-picture reference especially pertaining to areas of the world that are frequently in the news like the Middle East, which is poorly covered. The area of the Suez Canal is tiny, for example. Everywhere, the maps are crammed full of names of minor places and roads such that the big geographic and political features are obscured. There is only one map that shows the entire Black Sea and that is a map that also shows all of Russia so the Black Sea is about one inch from East to West. If you want to know the exact location of the Ukranian village of your ancestors, this is something to save for the internet. And, especially, the roads to get you there are not needed on this map, where they could not possibly be adequate. What I want is to get a big look of the Black Sea within its political context of neighbors and geography to help me make sense of the news and history. I don't want to find some small town and how to get there.

I concede that the design of a reference work like this is determined by a large number of choices and judgments and nothing will satisfy everyone. But generally I think that publishers are misguided in thinking everybody always wants a roadmap. Totally unsatisfying to me, and I am returning it.

Beautiful angst filled story (Spoilers below)
By Halo424
There were times in this book I cried, times I laughed, and times I felt the pain of the h. Such power in a novel with less than 200 pages. I am in awe of Caitlin Crews and her ability to pen such a thing. The H was cruel and hateful and yet I felt his pain. But his actions at times were unconscionable and very hard to read. You felt his hatred for the h and the lie he believed in for six long years. It consumed him. The worst part was he created that pain all by himself. He cut pretty much everyone out of his world and buried himself in work. When his Grandfather set him out on his quest he was actually making him face his fears. And that came in the face of his estranged wife. And his secret son. People hate that and in her defense she tried to contact him, wrote him letters, tested, etc but he blocked her. She could have done more maybe but rejection is painful and she lost hope. Now six years later he is back and his revenge is brutal. I hated him. But I am not going to rehash the book but honestly you must read it. It is a great journey and the HEA is delicious. Due in most part to the strongest h I have ever read about! She was amazing and she fought back courageously. I love this series but this to me was the best book so far. It will be a keeper.

WOW! You okay Ms. Crews?
By HoneyBLibrarian
Heartbreaking.
One of the most difficult original tearjerking HP I have read in quite some time. Not sure what Ms. Crews was "going through" but clearly something impacted or someone deeply for she dug into an abyss to ring this entangeled heartwrenching tale of what easily could have been resolved. It is difficult to understand why someone would throw away a marriage withought even a discussion but actually pride feelings of abandonment and rejection manifest in ugly ways.
Im in shock. Very sad book. Wow.
Whatever Ms. Crews is going through hope things get better.
I have reread this book twice. Loved the narration of how the mother decribed the father. This just felt like it was a homage to someone to bring their azz home.

P.S. I am pleasantly shocked. An Asian heroine. Goodness 100 years and HP finally realizes all readers are not white blonde blue eyed housewives. Im surprised this one made it past editing. Love the cover. Ms. Crews: Salute.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Fun and simple book!
By MissPriss
My 9 year old daughter just started taking piano lessons last year, so we purchased this Piano for the Young Beginner Primer A paperback book for her. Her piano teacher, who has been playing and teaching the piano for 20 years, highly recommends Bastein books for learning on. This is the only brand we will buy for our daughter since she is learning so easily with them. The book has pretty good illustrations too. These songs are easy for her to master and are helping her grow at a good pace. It took her a couple months to master all the songs. The levels of the book make it easy to figure out which book to buy next.

Songs:

- Two Black Cats
- Marching Song
- Rain Rain
- Jumping Frogs
- Clouds
- Halloween
- On the Swing
- Mary's Lamb
- Snow in Winter
- Ducks on the Pond
- Old MacDonald
- At the Zoo
- On the Merry-Go-Round
- Turtles
- Jack and Jill
- The Bell Tower
- My Pet
- Seagulls
- At the Circus
- Stepping Up and Down
- Hide and Seek
- Hot Air Balloon
- Pat-a-Cake
- Boat Ride
- Jogging Dogs
- Night Owl
- Pirates
- Baseball Game
- My Hobbyhorse
- Jack Be Nimble
- Yankee Doodle
- Thanksgiving Holidays
- Autumn Leaves
- Our Snowman
- Christmas Trees
- Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have to help you figure out if this is a book that might work for you. Thank you for taking time to read my review. If it was helpful, please click on the "yes" button below. :)

Great starter piano method for young children
By AmazonisAwesome!
I use this method exclusively for my younger students ages 5 & 6. The children love the songs because they are easy to play, recognizable, while some are original and they can also sing along while they play. The method also helps develop a child's ability to read and write music. I would strongly recommend buying the accompanying books because they can be very helpful to the learning process.
