Sven Lindqvist, a traveler and historian, paints a broad-brush history of European colonialism, especially in Africa. Drawing his title from Joseph Conrad's fable Heart of Darkness, he turns up 19th-century newspaper accounts of British massacres of wounded Sudanese rebels after the siege of Omdurman, of German concentration camps in what was once called Southwest Africa, of a Belgian captain who decorated his flower beds with the heads of recalcitrant plantation workers. These incidents were not unusual, Lindqvist writes. Neither were they thought especially brutal by their perpetrators, for, he argues, colonialism was guided by a doctrine that placed Europe at the top of the evolutionary ladder and regarded non-Europeans as a separate species bound for extinction--a doctrine that found its ultimate expression in the Holocaust. This is an occasionally gruesome and always provocative study.

Disturbing and daring

Four stars because too short. Although going through some of the references at the end of the book would extend the amount of reading considerably. Disturbing because the description of atrocities is heartrending for someone who values life and does not cheer at bombs being dropped through the push of a button on children two continents away by functionaries in plush armchairs. Exterminating all the brutes is online, alive and well, thank you. Disturbing because what is described in the book is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of massacres and atrocities. History recorded comparatively few descriptions of atrocities by a few well-meaning souls. The rest lacked the required courage the author mentions, in particular, at the end of the book. The courage to behold the beam that is in thine own eye. Daring to mention "Genocide" in connection with pre-WWII massacres, although the author writes the appropriate lines to exonerate himself - did he lack courage in the face of overwhelming odds ? Genocide is ingrained in human nature, but the roots of "scientific" and "good" genocide as conducted by European nations in particular, and discussed in the book, run much deeper. The book could have gained by delving into them. The book is concise, to the point, without prose-padding. This is particularly refreshing. It is a very good read... if you have the courage.

Incredibly powerful and relevant still

Exterminate All the Brutes is brief and disturbing; Sven Lindqvist unveils the realities and moral convictions we have almost completely repressed. Just as the author suggests, the book shatters the image we have of ourselves, but even more importantly, it is distressing how relevant his ideas and Conrad's `Heart of Darkness' are in the world today - again.

The title of the book is taken from Joseph Conrad's 1902 classic novel - Heart of Darkness. In it, the main character, Kurtz, goes to Africa to bring progress and culture to the uncivilized continent. He is dispatched to Africa as an ivory procurement agent, and as the story develops the reader is confronted with the unreal brutality of the colonial rule. Conrad's work intertwines the themes of `light of civilization' and `darkness of barbarism' and makes reader realize the hollowness of these phrases as Kurtz surrounds himself with chaos and mayhem. Sven Lindqvist develops this theme as he traces the imperial history of European colonialism and condenses it to a single sentence: "Exterminate all the brutes." European world expansion, he claims, and the employed tactics of extermination are the truths we like to forget. Preferring to externalize we look at the Holocaust as a historical aberration, a smear on the path of progress and enlightenment brought to the world by the Western societies. However, as the author points out, just as all of Europe contributed to the making of Kurtz, it would also be the European habits and political precedents that would lay the foundation for the atrocities of the Second World War. What was done in Africa, would be repeated in Europe - we know this, what we lack is the courage to face what we know and draw some conclusions.

The book culminates by pointing to the Holocaust, but one doesn't have to look far to see the same principles being applied in the world today; `Heart of Darkness' is applicable to every nation, culture and ideology. `Exterminate All the Brutes' is an incredibly powerful book.

Eric Seufert is a quantitative marketer with a passion for blending real-world problems with large amounts of data, econometric frameworks, and analytical systems. His professional specialty lies in programmatic statistical methods and predictive forecasting in freemium environments.

Eric received an undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin and an MA in Economics from University College London, where he was an Erasmus Mundus scholar. Eric joined Skype immediately out of graduate school and subsequently held marketing and strategy roles at Digital Chocolate and Wooga, where he is now the Head of Marketing. Prior to graduate school, Eric worked at uShip, the Austin-based marketplace for shipping services.

This is truly a seminal work by the author, one that, with radical zeal, distills down the principles and precepts necessary to survive in the byzantine and treacherous Mobile Gaming landscape.

Let us not fool ourselves, friends, for the sandbox we play in is a digital jungle. We breathe life into these mobile applications we build, pixel by painstaking pixel, only to have our hopes and dreams append to the D1/D3/D7/D30 retention metrics of our latest cohort.

The MOST in depth dig into the analysis of CRUCIAL freemium metrics

I received this book yesterday morning along with two others related to the field. We're preparing a freemium release and are looking for ways to see monetization of our non-game product through the eyes of a freemium game marketer.

This book gives me a deep understanding of what we need to calculate and review from a statistical standpoint in order to perform a deep analysis of our user base. It is focused on the calculation and analytical aspects. The other books spend more time on anecdotes and particular categories of advertisement/upsell/gameplay, whereas this book has comparatively few, which is fine with me. They don't really dig into analyzing the data.

This book is about gathering and analyzing the data to maximize LTV (Life Time Value of the customer). The only other place I have seen the type of explanation like in this book is in the author's blog mobiledevmemo.com.

The topics I found of particular interest related to measuring virality, events to be tracked for analysis, analysis spreadsheets and user segmentation. It helps if you have some background in statistics, but you can get most of the book if that's not your background.

Understanding this book will help you create and take every opportunity to understand your audience enough to maximally monetize your app.

Fantastic book for the freemium model

I recently moved into a PM role at a company that makes a freemium app and my Head of Product bought this book for me to read. I really enjoyed Freemium Economics...it's a very thorough overview of the freemium model, mostly from an analytics and revenue perspective, and for someone moving into product development with no prior understanding of freemium, the insight I gained from this book is extremely valuable. One thing to note is that the book doesn't go into detail about product design decisions...it reads more like a textbook, so it's very high-concept, and what it addresses really well is the process of developing and iterating on freemium products to maximize revenue. This is a great book and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone that needs a broad introduction to the freemium model

A must read

This is the book all bartenders want to read. There are plenty of books they think they have to read, but this is the one they want! I loved it the first time I read it and the second. As someone who has worked the better part of my 20's from behind the counter at bars all over the east coast, I can hands down say that this is the real deal. Funny, well written and its as tough the bartenders are telling your their stories one on one, across the bar.

Well recommended.

Superbly written and edited text directed at Diabetes professionals. Now, with many developments in treatment options, somewhat long in the tooth. Much remains excellent. Recommended part of every practicioner's library.

Kind of out of date...

This is a great book, except for that it is out of date. The authors are leaders in their field, and the information in the book is great, but the copyright says 2004. I hope they hurry and update this. There has been a lot of change since this was published. I know these folks are busy, but...

Design is a topic of social, cultural, and philosophical investigation. This book presents several essays by many contemporary philosophers of design, with a good mix between highly academic rhetoric and slightly more informal writings. Not light reading, but highly enlightening.

many helpful examples

The mathematical approach is very solid. The authors really try to explain everything and often are successful in this. However the mathematics are difficult to grasp for undergraduate students that do not have a background in mathematics. There are many worked examples in the book. That always helps a lot!
I have a few objections:
- there are far too many boxed equations, so that students become confused. Unimportant equations, or equations that are just repeated to show that the are not valid anymore should be left out or printed nondescript instead of emphasized
- there are many errors in the book. Did nobody see that even the Maxwell equations in Ch. 5 are wrong ??
- in the problems, the use of units or the given solutions are often inconsistent

Review of: Introduction to EM Fields

I was looking forward to using this book as a refresher course, but I am extremely disappointed in the way the book is put together. This surprises me as I have the book on Intro. to EMC and it is nothing but excellent. The problems I experienced with this book are 3 fold. 1) The authors consistently lose this reader in each and every example in grueling mathmatical calculations. I understand when studying EM the student must be adept at the mathmatical concepts, but other books seem more adept at not losing the reader in the middle of trying to teach a concept. 2) The end of the chapter problems suffer with the same problem. It seems to me you start with problems that teach the concept and then procede to more difficult ones to establish the theory firmly in the students understanding. But not this book the end of the chapter problems right away lead you into endless mathmatics and by the time you come up with the answer you are more aware of what you learned in previous math classes then the actual concept trying to be taught. 3) Finally, right off the bat some of the problems in the back of the book had the wrong answers. In any event I would suggest a first time EM student look more toward Hayt rather than this book. Once again I have been very pleased with this author in the past, but in my opinion this book fails to accomplish what it sets out to achieve.

Second Edition: Solid Introduction

I consider the second edition one of the best introductory textbooks on electromagnetics. (Another favorite of mine is Nathan Ida's textbook.) It is a well-written introduction to the subject. Unfortunately, some of the newer introductory textbooks on electromagnetics have been condensed, since many electrical engineering programs only require one upper-level course in electromagnetics.
