Publius Aelius Aristides Theodorus was among the most celebrated authors of the Second Sophistic and an important figure in the transmission of Hellenism. Volume I contains the Panathenaic Oration, a historical appreciation of classical Athens and Aristides’ most influential work, and A Reply to Plato, the first of three essays taking issue with the attack on orators and oratory delivered in Plato’s Gorgias.

About the Author

When Sam Wood, an officer with the Wells police department discovers the body of a famous Italian conductor lying in the road, it spells trouble for the small Carolina town. For the conductor was in town to perform at a musical festival designed to lift the town's sagging economy. The chief of police, Bill Gillespie, is no detective. But salvation inadvertently arrives when Wood arrests a black man with a wallet full of money in the train station. That man, Virgil Tibbs, a detective from Pasadena, quickly becomes Gillespie's out card. But as the tenacious Tibbs begins to hunt down the killer, there are plenty of people in town who prefer that their racial hierarchy remain intact, regardless of the truth.

For those who have seen the film "In the Heat of the Night" (and if you haven't, your loss), reading the original novel by John Ball will be something of a revelation. Not because the film changed the plot. While many details are altered in the plot(the victim in the film was a Northern industrialist, the town's name was Sparta), the film kept the same killer and motive. The revelation for fans of the film is the huge difference in how Ball wrote his characters and how they were portrayed in the film.

Tibbs is uber-competent, much as portrayed in the film. He knows how to investigate murders, and brings a veteran's confidence to the proceedings. However, unlike Sidney Poitier's simmering portrayal, Ball's Tibbs rarely displays impatience with the racial situation in Wells (contrast Poitier's angry delivery of the famous line "They call me MR. TIBBS" with the line as Ball wrote it, which suggests perfect calm). He understands that raging at every white man in sight is not going to change anything. He simply wants to do the job assigned to him, and not get killed for his skin color.

Gillespie in the book is not as competent as Rod Steiger's portrayal in the film. While the film didn't reveal much about the character's past, it did create the impression that Gillespie, while not the brightest bulb, has at least a rudimentary understanding of police work. In the book, Gillespie is a former prison guard who gets the job of police chief precisely because he will uphold the ingrained racial system of Wells. Throughout the book, much like the film, he is hostile to Tibbs, but gradually coming to respect him.

Finally, there's Sam Wood. In the film, Sam is basically a plot device. First he arrests Virgil, then he gets to be a murder suspect. In the book, Sam is fully fleshed-out character. He's earnest, dependable, and in the end, quite respectable. Initially expressing his fair share of racist attitudes, Wood develops legitimate respect for Tibbs' abilities as a detective, particularly as he realizes that Gillespie is no role model, and that Tibbs is more than simply the color of his skin.

While Ball is interested in examining race relations, he seems far more interested in telling a murder mystery. Plot-twists and blind alleys abound, as Tibbs and Gillespie zero-in on various suspects, only to have them fizzle-out. Nonetheless, he does an excellent job of following his characters as they struggle with the irrational prejudices that have shaped their lives, and the arrival of a man that makes lies of those prejudices. While the final solution of the mystery isn't particularly gratifying, the ride is, especially the character development and examination of social issues.

better on race than its more serious rivals

Winner of the Edgar Award for Best First Mystery and subsequently made into an Academy Award winning movie and successful TV series, In the Heat of the Night is only a decent mystery, but it's a great book about race. Though the book is different in many respects from the better known film, at its core it is still about the dilemmas faced by a proud black detective who is forced to help with a murder investigation in the Deep South, and by the white police officers who are forced to confront the disparity between their prejudices and the reality of this competent, likable fellow officer.
Though the main clash of characters occurs between Virgil Tibbs and Chief Gillespie--particularly in the movie where Poitier and Steiger were the stars--in many ways the key character in the novel is Sam Wood, the conscientious patrolman, later a suspect in the crime, who is young enough, open-minded enough, and resentful enough of Gillespie to give Tibbs a fair shake. More than anything, Sam is enamored with his own role as a law enforcement officer. He's clearly looking for a role model and it's fascinating to watch him struggle with the idea that Virgil, though black, may be the ideal person to emulate.
The racial and moral questions that animate the story help to overcome some rather stilted dialogue and a too frequent recourse to ending scenes with a shocking cliffhanger revelation from Virgil--for instance : "You see, sir, I know it for a fact that you've got the wrong man." Then again this was Ball's maiden effort, and some lapses into formula are to be expected. The book deserves to be read and remembered for its groundbreaking presentation of an unreservedly heroic black and its salutary message : that men should be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. The online magazine Salon ran a column several years ago suggesting that the film version of In the Heat of the Night might be one of the most profound movies ever made about race in America. The book too can stand its own ground alongside other, more "literary," texts like Invisible Man and Native Son; and it's message of hope and the possibility of progress has proven it more prophetic than its more revered rivals.

Enjoyable mystery

This is a good book, almost an excellent book, but for once in my life I have to say that I liked the movie better. As a book, it is a good who-dun-it mystery and I recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries. As social commentary, it isn't, and it doesn't have to be, but in comparing the book to the movie, the movie is absolutely social commentary, powerfully so, and the book just goes along its quiet way and tells a story about a little town with some problems and how they resolve. A good story, a good book, I like it a lot.

Great book!

I purchased this book because it was required for my phlebomoty class but I actually liked it. I expected the usually confusing textbook written in "textbook" language but it was anything but that. It easy to understand, helpful illustrations and a lot of practice quizzes that were very useful.

About the Author
Emerson Eggerichs and his wife Sarah travel the country conducting the Love and Respect marriage conferences. Before launching Love and Respect Ministries, Emerson was senior pastor of Trinity Church in East Lansing, Michigan, for nearly twenty years. Emerson received his B.A. in Biblical Studies and M.A. in Communications from Wheaton College and Graduate School. He was later awarded a Master of Divinity degree from Dubuque Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Child and Family Ecology from Michigan State University. Married since 1973, he and Sarah have three adult children. He is the president of Love and Respect Ministries.

Read either this or "Love and Respect"

Read this book if you haven't already read "Love and Respect." Or read this book if you have read "Love and Respect", but still don't "get" it.

Otherwise, skip this one, and keep practicing the Love and Respect principles you've already learned. The principles are fantastic and biblical and effective.

This book is helpful to teach you those principles, but it is very repetitive of the original material in "Love and Respect." However, Eggerichs does elaborate in this book with real-life testimonies from those who are working this out.

I recommend picking just one of the two books to read, but not necessarily both. Unless you're clueless about how relationships work between men and women. Then get them both.

The Language of Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

I was really excited to see this book on my list of books to review. I have been having a hard time communicating with my husband and needed some help. Learning how each of us loves was just what I needed. I found that the way that he shows me loves motivates me to show him love and the cycle continues but when I don't feel loved I stop that circle and it can take days to get back on track. This book gave me some wonderful things to help me and him work through this cycle quicker.
The energizing cycle is one example Dr. Eggerich gave as a visual to work through this cycle. He used the acronym COUPLE as a way to remember how to get through the steps(womens view)
C-Closeness . I want to be close to my husband it makes me feel secure
O-Openness I want to talk not just short answers open up to me
U-Understanding. Don't try to fix me just understand what I am going through
P-Peacemaking. Tell me your sorry.
L-Loyalty. Remind me that you love me. That I am your one and only
E-Esteem. Honor and cherish me

Holy Grail for Marriages!

Never fear, Dr. Eggerichs second book The Language of Love and Respect is a perfect mix of make-you-think realizations and real-life applications. Now, I must admit, I didn't read his first book, titled Love & Respect, so I was worried that I be a little lost. However, the beginning of the book dedicates itself to summarizing the book's key elements in a suffice manner. Basically, men and women speak different languages: men in respect, women in love. Men see hurts as disrespectful, women see them as unloving. Then you delve into the meat of the book, the how-tos. These include tangible points that I feel you can mold to fit your own marriage.

From avoiding the "crazy cycle" to talking to your spouse in the "Jesus way" I feel like this book is jam packed with the tools to mend any marriage, in any stage. I also think his emphasis on unconditional love in a marriage really hits on why communication is so important.

Dr. Eggerichs contribution to couples everywhere is this little treasure. Pick it up for a little marriage helper in 2010!

This was a required text in my Food Engineering Program, and now I use it as a reference source when I need to get immediate information and solution guides to problems while I am out consulting with clients. It gives just the right amount of data needed, and there are adequate references. I take it everywhere because I find this book full of practical examples which make it invaluable tool.

Geankoplis was listed as a reference text for our transport operations class, McCabe being the primary text for the course. I'm glad that I spent the extra money to acquire the text Transport Processes and Unit Operations because it was far better at teaching problem solving methods, especially other methods rather than just McCabe Thiele diagrams. It was a more comphrehensive treatment of the subject.

One of the best books I used in graduation and I found a miracle to buy it for such a low price. It didn't come with the CD but the book was nearly new. I couldn't be happier.
It covers most of the Unit Operations used in undergraduate. Also the chapters structure is easy to follow, so as the technical part. The examples and proposed problems are worth a look, too. I really recommend this for any chemical engineering student.

This book seems to be the best cinema studies reference book, so far, on the market. It does cover most definitions from different film theories and cinema studies briefly, yet precisely. It does not have all of the film studies' essential vocabulary, but it has most of it. Numerous examples are also supplied with every definition or argument. I should say, though, that the format could have beed better [easier to access]. But, other than that, this book is the perfect guide to your film studies. NOTE: This book has nothing to do with language of filmmaking and its process [I thought I should mention that, just in case...]

Great for self-teaching

I purchased this book because of the customer reviews and I think it is great. It is very easy to understand, well organized and well written. I don't have an accounting background but increasingly work in government finance and needed a book to study on my own. Another plus is that although I purchased this book used, I was able to download software and data exercises to go along with the book. As an aside, I also have "Governmental and Non-Profit Accounting Theory and Practice" (8th edition) by Freeman, Shoulders and Allison which I think is a very difficult book to read. If you are struggling with that book, I recommend trying this one.

This will be widely welcomed by singers who find such volumes in the traditional format difficult to manage. I have occasionally found that spiral-bound volumes have the disadvantage that the pages can become torn and eventually detach themselves; but this volume seems to be very sturdily made. About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury and Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, and was knighted in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Honours List in 1977. Willcocks also conducted The Bach Choir for 38 years, retiring in 1998. Sir David died in September 2015.

The masters do it again!

I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop with David Willcocks, and received this book as part of it. It was first published in 1987, but Sir David had some amusing anecdotes to share about how he and John Rutter, another name to reckon with in choral music circles, put it together.
This is what I like about it:
* These gentlemen are giants in the English choral music scene, and personify the English choral tradition in everything they do. So it's a pleasure to find that they have included many carols from other countries, as well as the English ones. It's very hard to find non-English-language carols, so this is a nice little collection.
* Their 4-part arrangements are imaginative but easy enough to sight-sing.
* It also includes a listing of church festivals other than Christmas, with the names and page numbers of carols that would be appropriate for each.
* For ease of navigation as you're singing, the verses are in Roman type while the refrains are in italics.
* For reasons that are not clear, they have chosen to include the text in the original language in some cases, but not all. The foreign language texts are immediately under the English translations, so you can sing in either language.
* At the very end of the book is the order of service for the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, with instructions on the appropriate rank of each person to read, from chorister to bishop.
If you are only going to buy one carol book, this and the Oxford Book of Carols are the best ones to consider. The Oxford has more in it, and is hugely more expensive, so I recommend this one! it'll take you several Christmasses to sing your way through it.

Lucked out! Most of your choir carols in it and David Willcocks pencil instructions

This carol book has terrific carols and some very unusual ones. They range from easy to hard so most choirs can benefit from them. It actually has an outline and readings from the Service of Lessons and Carols which could be very valuable for the music director and church leader.

My particular used copy just happened to have notes in it from David Willcocks himself. Can you imagine!!! This was just too good to be believed. I love nothing more than this service of lessons and carols, so the best is here. There are also some Easter Carols --worth the price.

Absolutely marvelous collection with wonderful descants and interesting arrangements. I have given copies to many people because I love this book so MUCH!!! If you've ever lived in England, or ever loved CDs of King's College Choir or St. John's College Choir from Cambridge, England, you will discover the arrangements in this great book!
