Good beginner's guide to watercolour

This is a helpful beginners book for learning watercolour.

The author and artist is Yuko Nagayama (永山裕子) from Japan. The original edition of this book is もういちど透明水彩を始めよう。基本の12のレッスン which was published in 2012. This edition is translated by publisher Harper Design. There are 104 pages.

This book takes a very hands-on approach to teaching watercolours. There are several step by step tutorials to follow along. It even teaches you basic proportional drawing so that you can sketch the outline of the subject before you add watercolours. I find that very useful for beginners with absolutely no knowledge at drawing. There are even tips on sketching.

The tutorials feature good looking examples. Even though the subjects are simple such as fruits or flowers, after Nagayama's watercolour treatment, they look really nice. The instructions are simple to follow, and the colours to use are clearly listed.

Compared to other watercolour books, this is not comprehensive, so it does not teach you effects like splatter or more advanced techniques like wet on wet. What it does well is to get you comfortable at painting simple subjects with watercolour. And you can then build on what you learn for more challenging subjects in the future.

It's a great instructional book for watercolour beginners. The Japanese edition is also very favourably rated on Amazon Japan.

Best watercolor book I had

I had this book for about 3 weeks now. One of the pictures is my first painting when I received the book and the other is what I just paint yesterday. I follow most of the lessons and I can really see my improvements. After I have this book I also start looking at other resources I could find that Yuko Nagayama has given, like youtube. It really shows what she taught in this 12 lessons. This 12 lessons is always the basic of her painting. Especially understanding shadows, the objects and how to use color and keep the color vibrant, not overdo to create mud. I have a few other watercolor and gouache books. They are not nearly instructive as this one is. Each lesson has its own goal. I really enjoy this book and will continue follow the lessons.
Note: She is using Holbein 24 color in this book. Just in case if you are thinking to buy this book and hasn't bought any watercolor paint yet. I already have Shinhan professional 30 color. I was so tore thinking if I should buy another set, but I think it works out fine. For people who already have paint, I would say stick with what you have. Besides "Opera(a really bright pink)" maybe very different from other sets, I would say the other should be pretty similar and you should be able to mix some color to get what you need.

This is THE ONE and enjoy painting!!

I absolutely love this book

I absolutely love this book!! I wish I had it when I was first starting to paint watercolors. The simple manner in which the author explains how to draw shapes and how to get your painting started with the correct use of colors is so helpful. Anyone who is interested in painting watercolors, whether beginner or more experienced, should have this book in their reference library. I am having a ball posing and painting just ordinary objects around the house. Bananas and apples will never look the same to me again. This book has helped me to train my eyes to see the colors within colors, the colors within shadows, and shapes.

Perfect for Homeschooling Moms and their kids!

I have been trying to teach my kids Latin with no Latin background myself. There are some wonderful programs out there, but I still struggled to "get it". We have tried several programs with our oldest. She has done great, but I have struggled. The downfall is always me. I don't have the option of a Latin tutor, so I struggle on for the sake of my kids. This is the first to make the light go on for me therefore for them.

After listening to Bill Linney speak and trying this book myself, I started to understand somethings that I struggled with. Suddlenly, it seemed so easy. I tried this at home with my children - they love it! They are begging to do Latin with this book.

My two year old says with ease the Latin words. (I am not sure why it just happened. He's been hearing Latin since he was born. I think he saw that his siblings were having fun, and he wanted to join in.)

Imagine, my shock when after 3 days of this book when my 4 year old who can't read is translating oral Latin sentences. I read "Sum et nauta et agricola." And she said "I am both a salior and a farmer." I about fell out of my chair.

I recommend this to any homeschool mom or student who needs some help. Any student who can read can do this on their own. The way this is written anyone can do it. We have moved pretty quickly through the first 15 lessons, but you can take your time. We are slowing down now, but it's still coming together with ease for us.

Intro to Latin in bite-sized pieces

This new book meets a need that others I've seen don't: it dishes up Latin lessons in small bites and makes them interesting-- just right for the beginner whose passion for the subject has not yet taken hold and needs to ease into it. But if you pick up this book because you already have a passion to tackle the Latin, you can cover more than one lesson at a time. My homeschooled (elementary-aged) kids have found this method effective, and the author has done the work to make it easy to teach, even if (like us) you have no prior knowledge of Latin. As we got this for our children, I haven't gotten all the way through it yet myself, but predict that by the end, I'll have a great foundation for further studies. Mr. Linney's book stirred an interest that I didn't have or expect before I picked up this great intro to Latin.

Perfect way to begin to learn Latin

I'd like to add my praise to that of the other reviewers of this marvelous text. I recently retired and decided to set up a home-study course for several subjects I hadn't had time for when I was an undergrad. Latin was one of them. I finished this book with the help on the on-line readings by the author in about ten days and have ordered his recommended next text to continue my studies. This text was by far the best introduction of the four subjects I chose. It introduced the subject in small bites and then continued to reinforce already-covered material at each step. The book was too short. I could have gone on with it forever. I wish there was a "Getting Started with Latin II, III, IV" etc. This was one of the best texts I've ever used in an academic life that included two Master's degrees. Thank you William Linney. There could not be a better text (with superb Internet support) on this subject. Let's deluge Mr. Liney with requests for other subjects that he might be familiar with. He must know more than Latin.

Once he made up his mind to write this book he refined his processes and began to create more checklists to help him and others deal with the herculean task of planning in smaller, more manageable chunks. Soon he had a straightforward, well developed plan for each stage of end-of-life decision making. He began to share it with others close to him who were helping their own family members. Coping with the impending loss of a loved one is one of the most difficult challenges a family faces. About the Author
Over the course of more than thirty years, in the author s career as a human resources professional, he has helped others grow and succeed through his dedication to personal and skills training and development. An only child, it fell to him to assist his parents as they aged, became infirm, and died, a responsibility he embraced with compassion and commitment. Along the way, his wife s parents and family also needed his help to maneuver through the maze of complicated decisions, forms, laws, regulations and heart-wrenching family decisions about whether to use medical devices to prolong life or to die in accordance with their wishes. Learning of his growing experience and competency, friends began to ask for his advice and council. Finding he had an aptitude and a gift for helping others bring order, dignity and a sense of calm to families and individuals facing death, he listened to family members who encouraged him to document what he had learned about eldercare planning and end-of-life decisions, and be of service. Discussing with others his plans to write this book, he immediately discovered a huge need: elderly singles and couples, adult children of elderly parents, members of the clergy, providers of eldercare services, insurance, banking, legal, investment and medical professionals all enthusiastically told him they needed a short, easy-to-understand and easy-to-apply blueprint written in layman s language for end-of-life planning. Their reactions spurred him to commit time and energy to start and complete this book. Great resource for the "sandwich generation" and beyond

I wish I'd had this book before my mother passed on. It contains so many ideas and hints about things one might miss - even if he or she considers herself rather "savvy." Right up-front, Don Burrows tells the reader that he is not a lawyer. I consider that fact a "plus." He's one who has "been there, done that" in taking care of end-of-life plans for several family members.

If you have an aging loved one - or if you ARE an aging person - consider getting this book (and its companion workbook) for yourself and the other decision-makers who will want input on end-of-life plans. Although I consider myself in good health, not only did I get my own copy but purchased copies for both my sons. It truly helps if all the caregivers (or potential caregivers) are on the "same page" before crucial decisions need to be made! Don Burrows puts it altogether for family members who will be involved. Save a family squabble, and get multiple copies of this book!

Awesome story

The mysterious story about the two wolve girls. Fantastic book. Had a lovely time reading this book. Comes in mint condition. The book was required for one of my college courses and it was fantastic. Professors never really assign a good book to write an essay about. However I loved reading this book and writing about it. The first time through I was kind of confused at what was going on because the text was so difficult. But as I began writing my paper, I fell in love with the story more. Highly suggested!

So interesting

Wow- This book was different. Told in a perspective that left me a little confused at times- yet I still wanted to finish every page.
The story is one of a kind and will really make you thankful for your life. Such a different culture than any that I have ever experienced- gave me an eye opening look at life and how different it can be from one human to the next.

She isn't very good at either

Bhanu Kapil is defined as an "experimental fiction poet." After reading Humanimal, being present in a Q n A, and seeing her do reading i've made a conclusion. All she does is mix fiction writing and and what can barely be called non-prosaic. She isn't very good at either. Her fiction is boring and poetry unimaginative. Humanimal is a example of this. 3 different perspective that switch at a moments notice. Neither are very good at all.

Excellent Translation

An excellent translation of Comnena's work, remains true to the original Greek while providing good equivalents for the more difficult idiomatic expressions. Also includes a couple of very helpful maps and appendices. A wonderful read for anyone interested in Byzantine history.

A nice improvement on a good edition

As usual, I am not reviewing Anna Komnene as an historian. I am reviewing this particular edition of her work.

This is a relatively recent edition of the 'Alexiad'. While the core of E.R.A. Sewter's 1969 translation remains in place, many changes have been made and they are all good. The first, and most visually obvious, is the jacket. The 2003 edition of the Alexiad featured a figure in mosaic, which the book identified as Alexios Komnenos, as depicted in a 12th c. mosaic in the Hagia Sophia. This isn't entirely wrong, in that the mosaic is of Alexios Komnenos, it's just the wrong one. The figure depicted was Alexios, son of John II Komnenos and heir-apparent until his early death. His mosaic is attached but is rotated 90 degrees from the famous mosaic panel of his parents, making the mis-identification understandable for a badly-informed tourist guide, but not a serious publication. Thankfully, Penguin has fixed this issue and replaced the cover image with a high-quality picture (the coin it is a picture of is about the size of a thumbnail) of one of Alexios I Komnenos' hyperpyra (meaning: fire-refined) coins. The new editor, Oxford's Peter Frankopan has also adopted a more regular transliteration style based upon that used in the The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium (3-Volume Set), in place of Sewter's original Latin-based transliteration style. These changes extend into the text as well, which generally seems to be mostly unchanged, although Frankopan's updates allow for more precision. Titles and important Greek terms are left transliterated.

The book's appendices are also much overhauled. Rather than work too hard, the original 'Alexiad' borrowed a few appendices from Sewter's earlier translation of Michael Psellos' Fourteen Byzantine Rulers: The Chronographia of Michael Psellus (Penguin Classics). The essays on Greek fire and the Byzantine navy are gone, which is fine because they both include much old scholarship. Instead, a table of relevant Byzantine rulers, popes, and patriarchs is included, as well as stemmata of the Doukas and Komnenos families. The real valuable addition lies in Frankopan's excellent notes. For a Penguin Classic this is exceptional, as they are usually rather bare when it comes to notes. A glossary is also provided. Such an addition is absolutely essential, as many titles are now just transliterated in the text itself. While the entries are brief, they are sufficient. Frankopan also includes a bibliographic essay at the start of the text which provides a useful summary of the most recent and important scholarship.

This new edition of the 'Alexiad' includes some very useful support materials. It is one of the finest Penguin Classics in print, and easily replaces Sewter's original version.

In this history the Emperor Alexius comes across as a sort of medievil Lee Iacoca or Carlos Gohsn, who through very delicate wheeling and dealing manages to bring back a floundering empire from the brink. Since Anna was the emperor's daughter, we could expect a hagliography from her, but that would discredit her intensely perceptive analysis of the political situation as well as her own personal experiences with many of the major players or others who knew them. It would also ignore the fact that this book is in many ways a treatise by Anna on what it means to be a good ruler, as exemplified through the person of Alexius.

Excellent book for history buffs and people looking for examples of great leadership.

Amazing book to start learning Phoenix.

This book tackles the basic fundamental stuffs of modern web development such as:
1. MVC serve rendering style of web programming
2. Database (Ecto)
3. Authentication (over session and over token for websocket)
4. Real time/websocket (Channel)
6. OTP (breaking down your Phoenix app into small supervised apps to avoid monolithic design)
7. How to test all of the 1-6 components above

This is a must have book for people interested in Phoenix and Elixir.

There are a lot of magic in Phoenix, like Rails, but the concepts are easy to grasp once you repeat the book few times. Coming from NodeJS world where everyone does their own thing, and there's no convention. I'd say Phoenix embraces a nice balance, having solved many things under the hood by using macros, provide great developer experience and convention, but at the same time not overly complicated to understand.

Not too mention that it solves your scalability in real time applications that are self-healing, fault tolerance, great tooling because Elixir itself is super awesome! This framework is truly an amazing framework, for those that seeks to replace Rails to embrace the new web, where everything is massively connected real-time.

Wow! What a woman! This is a moving story, very human, very real, very wise, very uplifting. Madelyn had a great sense of humor, but the most amazing thing was her strength and ability to grow spiritually in the face of adversity. Many people would feel sorry for themselves, but Madelyn was able to see good in the face of so much that was pretty awful. She often prayed that God would take her husband, but if not, that God would give her the strength to carry on. She focused on remembering and treasuring the good times, not seeing her husband only as he was after suffering a debilitating stroke. From the Author
In 1993 my father, Quentin Kubin, who appeared to be as healthy and robust as any seventy-five-year-old man on the planet, experienced a debilitating stroke, and my mother, Madelyn, became his primary caregiver. Mom was suffering with macular degeneration, osteoporosis, congestive heart failure, restless leg syndrome, and severe hearing loss.

In order to cope with her isolation, loneliness, and frustration, she often went to her computer, disengaged her emotional monitor and wrote letters to me in which she described everything she was experiencing and exactly how she felt about it.

I have often compared her letters to the classic television series M*A*S*H. In each one there was something that made me laugh, something that made me cry, and something that made me believe the human spirit can survive and even rise above tragedy and loss.

In 2004 I was asked to speak at our church on Mother's Day about mother-daughter relationships. I wanted people to know who my mother had really been, so I went out to the garage and took down a cardboard moving box my husband had labeled, "Letters from Madelyn." I found one letter that I thought was particularly poignant, as well as being very, very funny. At church I read excerpts from the letter and shared a few stories. Afterward, people came up to me and exclaimed, "You have to write a book!"

I knew they were right, and I started on it the next day. When I finished the book, I couldn't find a publisher. I was told that caregiving was depressing and no one would buy a book on that topic. I felt compelled to share my mother's story, so I self-published the first edition of "Letters from Madelyn," in 2007.

It didn't take me long to realize that if I ever hoped to see my basement floor again, I would have to figure out a way to sell the books. I started speaking to service organizations, book clubs, and small caregiver support groups. Word spread, and my speaking business grew.

On the way home from a speaking engagement in 2011, the man seated next to me on the plane asked me what I did for a living. When I told him, he said, "If I was a caregiver and I went to your website at 3:00 o'clock in the morning in desperate need of help to get through the night, would I find the support I needed on your website?"

I felt like I'd been sucker-punched. I shook my head and said, "No. You wouldn't. You would find information about my book and about me as a speaker."

The next day I told my husband I wanted to created an online, video-based caregiver support program. He said, "That sounds like a lot of work!" I said, "We can do it in six months."

Four years later, my dream was realized. CaregiverHelp.com finally evolved into a resource for people like my mother who find themselves in need of information, support, encouragement, and a few laughs to get them through a difficult day or a sleepless night.

I know my mother would be amazed and humbled beyond words to know that her experiences inspired me to edit her letters in a book, create a website, and develop a new speaking career.

I know from her experience, as well as my own, that caregiving is one of the most difficult and generous acts of love any of us will ever perform on behalf of another. It is often a long and lonely road. If you are a caregiver, trust that you will get through it. When it's over and you look back on it, I am quite certain you will realize that you were smarter, kinder, stronger, and more generous than anyone could have possibly asked you to be. On reflection, you will know that it was hard, and you did the best you could; and someday you will see that even in the moments when you felt isolated, alone, and boxed in, like Madelyn, you were growing in unexpected and beautiful ways.

About the Author
Elaine K. Sanchez is an author, speaker, and co-founder of CaregiverHelp.com, a video-based caregiver support program. Her passion for helping family and professional caregivers cope with the emotional stress of caring for individuals with progressive and degenerative diseases is based on her own experience of caring for aging family members. She is the author of the unflinchingly honest and sometimes uproariously funny book, Letters from Madelyn: Chronicles of a Caregiver, as well as numerous freelance articles for a variety of print and online publications. Together with her husband, Dr. Alex Sanchez, Elaine developed the curriculum for Gero-407 Caregiving, which was taught at Western Oregon University, as well as a number of online continuing education courses for nurses, long-term care administrators and mental health professionals. Elaine delivers keynotes, breakout sessions, and trainings at conferences across the US.

A Real Read

I have been a caregiver for over 15 years, as we deal with my husband's chronic and increasing health issues. I couldn't put this book down, but after I finished, I think I should have! Madelyn's letters are such an honest insight into the heart and mind of her own caregiving situation, that I felt I was there with her, and was completely drained after finishing the book. She certainly bared her heart and soul, which is a testimony to her relationship with her daughter, Elaine Sanchez. Sometimes it is difficult for those not in a caregiving situation to understand what life is like in that role. Great read for understanding the emotions of that! I would add that there is so much more available today than 25 years ago, when Madelyn was a caregiver. Just having access to the internet and Amazon 2-day delivery alone makes a huge difference in my life, not to mention the wealth of resources available to us through the hospitals, clinics, mental health professionals, and community in general. Good read for me, but I should have taken smaller doses =)!

Wonderful

I am currently attending a gerontology class by Alex and Elaine Sanchez and this book was required reading. Its an amazing compilation of letters from Elaine's mother, Madelyn, as she served as caregiver for her husband after his stroke. Madelyn's humor and strength are endearing and I am positive her experiences are relatable to anyone who is a caregiver. I can't recommend this book enough!
