Jasper Maskelyne was a world famous magician and illusionist in the 1930s. When war broke out, he volunteered his services to the British Army and was sent to Eygpt where the desert war had just begun. On Malta he developed 'the world's first portable holes': fake bomb craters used to fool the Germans into thinking they had hit their targets. His war culminated in the brilliant deception plan that won the Battle of El Alamein: the creation of an entire dummy army in the middle of the desert.

Marvelous story about magic and WWII.

Just finished this marvelous book that read more like fiction than real life. The glow of battle is still upon me. Jasper Maskelyne was a terrific magician from a family of magicians who took his skills to battle in WWII. He created whole armies out of wood and mirrors. He moved the Suez Canal and the port of Alexandria. This was a terrific read.

History many don't know about - Very interestingly written

Using magic to win the war? Sounds like a movie or something fictional, but it was true and has a great story to go with it. You'll want to read the whole thing even if you are not a huge history buff. It's just real interesting and many of the tacktics are still being used in some form today.

An entertaining read

You must understand that this is war-fiction and that while many of the events actually happened, that he was more of a figurehead than the actual creator of many of these stunts. The book is a quick read and enjoyable if kept in that context.
